I have just finished watching it for the first time and I have to agree with you... to some degree. I think that the anime is a fantastic metaphor for closeted homosexuality, with how Light conseals his truth of being the kira/gay by performing the stereotypical role of the good son (who definitely isn't gay dad). He dated women only to use them and create appearances of a normal teen. His rivalry, hatred but also kinship with L who was the only person who ever understood him but also was a threat to his comfortable status quo. This is undeniable that this is a perfect metaphor for closeted homosexuality even if that wasn't the authorial intention. My interpretation is not the gay one however I do see it as very much so just as valid. This story is in essence a typical male fantasy, and the thing with male fantasy is that the conflict is not with the desired woman, but with other men. Another way to look at it is the story of Mario. Mario wants to save the princess, but he has to fight Bowser to get to her. However in the end the goal doesn't matter as much as the journey, thus in essence Mario needs Bowser to be happy more than Peach, she becomes less relevant and furthermore objectified. I hope my rambling makes sense, I could have used an analogy with the Arthurian knight but I think this is more culturally relevant. So in my interpretation Light needs L not because he necessarily loves him but because he creates the struggle which makes Light's goal meaningful. That focus on the struggle between the two puts anyone and especially women in the position where they are objectified, reduced to their usefulness to the characters. I find the treatment of girls in the story regrettable however everyone ultimately was just a pawn in the grander schemes of the two. I can't say much about the fan service from the women as I didn't feel anything from what I assume was meant to excite most. I do not see what the fuss is about with Misa Misa, Light was perfectly reasonable in not being interested in her. One last note, Rem deserves justice and she is one of the girls. Great video👍
I agree with you, but I don't see why those two interpretations can't exist together! Light being gay would perfectly explain the perfect son performance (like the person in the video said). When we see Light at the start of the show we get a glims into his life and more importantly his room. He barely seems like a person, there is no sign of personality to be seen in his activities or decoration. He performs life. He goes to cool and he is intelligent, he does absolutely NOTHING but study and he gets rewarded for it but the reward doesn't even seem to make him happy or satisfied. He is good in school just for the hell of it. Because he has no hobbies, no interests and he has nothing else to do. I'm sorry but you can't convince me that a teenager is interested in nothing at all. This is suspiciously boring and feels completely unnatural. The only way to make sense of this would be to assume that anything that LIght wants and desires on more than a surface level he suppresses. Things that bring humans joy like food, entertainment, the company of your friends and f.e. m4sturbation he seems to take 0 interest in bc he is not in touch with his feelings. The boy could be completely in love with L and have absolutely no clue bc he just feels the thrill of the game or winning. He as a human gets completely lost and he exists as a shell of other people's expectations. Also about the Misa thing, even I (a gay man, like gay as in had nightmares about dating women) questioned my sexuality over that girl and he shows no interest in her no matter how pretty she dresses up or even her complete opposite Takada he seems to tolerate at best, he doesn't spend a single second thinking about her as anything but a tool.
I dont think it is a perfect metaphor for the stand in for homosexuality to be villainy and for it to be portrayed as evil. Like sure if you remove literally the core of kira it looks kinda simillar, but the fact the gay is equated to evil makes it a terrible metaphor. Idk as a gay man I wish people would care more about genuine gay stories and authors instead of trying to extract it from quasi homoerotic stories that ultimately have nothing to do with it

@@meijuta you may have a misconception about aro and ace people. Attraction doesnt equal action. You may not have initial romantic attraction but you can still date. Dating doesnt require romantic attraction, as you can still love someone without looking at them and having a crush feeling for them. Same with finding someone sexually attractive and having sex. Also its a spectrum, some people feel romantic or sexual attraction based on specific circumstances or scenarios. Action doesnt equal attraction. Theres sex repulsed aces, sex indifferent aces, and sex positive aces. Same with aros and romance. Its a spectrum too, like demi/grey/orchid/aego/nebula You dont have to have attraction to people sexually to participate in the action of sex. Sex and and sexual attraction arent exactly related. Finding someone sexually appealing is not the same as doing sex. Same with romantically appealing but participating in being in romantic partnerships. You can still be romantic and have sex but you dont feel the beginning attraction. You can still love people romantically but not feel the attraction to them to actually feel the NEED to do stuff. The attraction is the NEED and WANT. You can still do it without needing it or wanting it. Some aces describe sex as significant as doing laundry or it being just to please a partner. Some enjoy sex but dont look at someone and think “hmm sexy” nor do aros look at someone and think “I wanna cuddle, kiss, they are my crush!” More so its straight to the point where you hook up or just ask someone out to date without all the extra “crush” or “sexual appeal” someone has. Its relationships without the inherent attraction to the relationship. Its not onesided since you can still feel love or lust. So you can still be a loving boyfriend but it isnt inherently something you feel the need to be nor were attracted to being. Its complicated for those who arent aro or ace. Its a spectrum too, so aroace people may have some or little attraction This is broadly what aromantic is, theres microlabels that describe more specific type such as greyaro, demiaro, orchidaro www.verywellmind.com/what-does-it-mean-to-be-aromantic-5189571 Broad asexuality, www.verywellmind.com/what-is-asexuality-5075603

Im pretty sure Death Note was a direct commentary on Japanese culture with a focus on figures like the cult leader who causes all the murders. I've seen the writer talk about it but dont remember whwre.
ik i’m late to this, but i see it one of two ways: - light *thought* he was aroace/seemed aroace (maybe not knowing the labels), just because of his lack of interest in women, while not considering the possibility of liking men - he is on the aroace spectrum but also gay (those are just my headcannons, though! i absolutely respect others, even if i have different ones)
i felt exactly the same way when i saw it and felt weird. it felt like at some point the video was trying to seek some subconscious desire to “erase the possibility of his characters not to be straight” from the author, from i don’t really know where, i could have badly listened to it however? but i sincerely feel like it would have been maybe better to simply keep the part of light facing similar struggles to non-straight people, since with the rest, it ends up feeling like the video has no conclusion towards its title. i wonder if someone can correct me on that, if they understood the meaning of the video better than me.
L has a deep disdain for light, so does near but to a greater extent. It is also said that L doesn't view light as a friend, only as an interesting enemy. The same would go for Light. He also did not kill L to proof that his ideals about justice are correct, he did it completely out of boredom and the fact that the death note Was something that excited him, which got him into that mess to begin with.
no it's a pretty common interpretation for people who know aspec ppl exist. why wouldn't it be when there's a lot of evidence for him not being interested in sex or romance
yeah, dats kewl, but i like to think that light’s a aro-ace sociopath 😹😹🤣🤣🤣 like they’re 100% obsessed with each other but not in a gay way., i feel. it would be cuz they give each other’s lives purpose, ya get me?~ 🤨
Yknow when light told near that he was not L's equal and didn't deserve to stand where he stood, at first it was cathartic and i agreed. It felt like he was finally addressing how i felt about a really shallow and uninteresting character. But in retrospect, maybe that scene was meant to be ironic and show that light could say the exact same thing to himself.
i agree, Light is definitely gay, like the author said he could never love a woman. Not only that, he feels 0 romantic attraction to any female characters, and his closest relationship is with L. yeah he's definitely gay lmao
Those very same details could very much also just make him ace. It'd be one thing if he was distraught L died, but he pretty much just gloats about it because "[he] won."
I swear some of you can't just enjoy something and not try to make it about something else. If anything it's a commentary on how many groups go about obtaining their perceived goals. Not caring for the possible consequences or those that are hurt along the way. So tell me why we're focusing on whether or not someone's gay?
I really LOVE LAWLIGHT and I agree with the fact that there is a strong bond with each other since they can be at the same level of intelligence and deduction as the other. BUT I have another deduction... IT'S TRUE that Ohba doesn't know how to write women my god... The only character that I loved and I thinks is well writed is Naomi Misora but she dies :(( Anyway, as I was saying... It kind of remind me the dynamics the greeks had: they said that the true love and partnership comes from men to men love. And that women was only for reproduction... And that there was nothing more stronger than the bond between two men. SAYING ALL THIS... Anilyzing the series and both characters I've came to the conclusion that I think they are both, L and Light, asexuals. Don't get me wrong, I can sense the tension between this two and the scene when L is massaging Lights feet (I know it's a christian reference BUT THE CHRISTIAN REFERENCE IS JESUS CLEANING JUDAS FEET, NOT MASSAGING THEM?!) is really queer coded, I can deny it. But I think that if I have to be objective and not putting my love for this ship in between, I am pretty sure they are both asexuals. That's it, that's all I wanted to say.
L wasn't massaging lights feet. By your own admission, you know it isn't "queercoded" and is an explicit refrence to one of the most famous religious tales ever written. I bet you lecture others about "media literacy," too.

@SakuraKurosaki1 It's not "queer coded." You saying "you just don't want to see it" is especially hilarious considering thay you are desperately trying to see imaginary "queer coding" (no such thing) in every single thing you see. "Queer coding" just means "there is nothing to indicate this character is gay, but I am desperate to imagine it in my mind." We get it. You are very attracted to underage boys like Light. That doesn't mean everyone else is attracted to minors.
@SakuraKurosaki1 I once saw a war movie where a guy moaned after getting shot. Clearly, the directed was telling me that said character was in a gay relationship with the Nazis. As we all know, if someone moans for any reason, that means they are having homosexual relationships with the people they want to kill.
@@SakuraKurosaki1 Yes, I saw the scene. That's how I know "queer coding" does not exist and is just you projecting really hard onto cartoons where it doesn't exist. If you weren't a Patrick Bateman level evil sociopath, you would realize people can interact with each other without it being some psychopath attempt to manipulate them into getting your rocks off. You must be a profoundly evil monster if you didn't know that most friendships aren't an attempt to form a polycule.
This idea of sub context has always existed. It isn’t a fact but an observation and a hypothesis of a fictional character’s identity. Such an idea should not detract your interest from the character.
Looks like I finished the video. You do realize Bakuman is based off of the actual authors right? The Authors who are friends in real life. This isn't some giant cover up.
Look I'm not gonna watch the video, probably, but its actually nuts you people insist Light and L are gay. The idea of two men interacting with each other on a friendly basis is so foreign to you that they must have homosexual feelings for each other. Anyways if you really want to know the actual answer, L hates Light because of how much of a deceitful liar he is and Light hates L because he wants to catch him. That is your answer.
Um, hey so… you probably should have just watched the video. It was a good one that was not trying to “prove” Light’s sexuality one way or another. Most normal adult people are aware that made up characters do not possess an actual sexuality, identity, etc. Characters and the narratives that they exist within, reveal more about ourselves and our surroundings than anything else. You don’t need to be so prepared to throw hands over men in fiction being perceived as anything less that super duper straight as an arrow.
Idk as a gay man I wish people would care more about genuine gay stories and authors instead of trying to extract it from quasi homoerotic stories that ultimately have nothing to do with it
so what you are saying is mario the idea vs mario the man?
Mental illnesses aren't a gender or a sexuality 🤡
Going the be thinking about the basement metaphor forever now thank you for rewiring my brain

THERES A BASEMENT INSIDE ME?!?!!!?!??!!??!!
I have multiple basements i think cause depending on my mood and who I'm around i act like completely different people and when I'm alone i just confuse the crap out of myself and talk to myself and for some reason always refer to myself as we or say stuff like we need to stop talking to ourselves or our head is super messed up based purely on the description I'd say it's very likely i have DID also known as split personality disorder but I take one of those weird tests and there were parts that I could relate to and things that I 100% didn't relate to some people online have called me bipolar which was probably becase I slipped up and talked to myself through text in a murder mystery game after I lost and said oh well let's try a different personality becase I have so many parts of my personality so sometimes I'll have fun by mixing them together and trying different personalitys which is super fun sometimes but also not becase I don't understand emotions that much i can kinda feel them sometimes but I don't get why some things offend people or why people do the things they do and if I'm being honest iv learned a few tricks from the less likeable parts of my which are definitely munipulative and I understand why balance is a good thing which if why for literally years iv been trying to untangle this mess of a person and find balance between the good and bad but it seems iv barely scratched the surface of what is in my basement/basements which is a annoying but I have to deal with it if I don't want to end up as bad as light which i understand where he is coming from but he went way overbord and did some stupid stuff still wish he won and not near becase near winning is like if the joker killed batman and then robin killed the joker it makes no sense if either kira or l won id be perfectly happy but sadly near had to come ruin the whole last part of the series also do people know nothing about basic villian stuff u kill the hero u kill the story same goes for if the hero kills the villian it's just annoying why also I literally have no idea why I wrote any of this but idk maybe i do sorta and can't tell if I actually want someone to read it and give me advise but anyways I'm going to stop talking before I let anything else and worse spill out like when I drempt of brutaly killing two or maybe i think three guys who tried to hurt my family which I honestly can't tell if I actually care about them or if I just wanted an excuse to kill probably a mix of both tbh especially considering i kinda went overkill and just kept on stabbing and hitting when they were already dead wow I'm way to talkative when I'm tired i keep telling myself to stop but I can't that's odd but anyways if you have advice just reply to my reply I'll get an email or something idk bye random stranger

•Light:
Depressed when doing things he finds boring and tedious.
Upbeat when doing things he loves.
Quick to anger.
Mood swings.
Difficulty regulating emotions.
Hormones out of control.
Not use to being told no.
Puts too much pressure on himself.
Needs mental health evaluation.
Too proud to ask for help.
Does not want to dishonor his family.

GAY LIGHT YAGAMI

I love this video so so much thank you!!! I keep coming back to this and even though i felt that i knew for years no that light is probably gay and plays a character even as "Light Yagami", but not to this extent, this feels like it reframes everything and I love it so much!!!!
I Hearcanon him as Aro/ace (I'm writing this b4 watching the vid)
I see them aroace too, mostly ace, but its a spectrum. Aroace people can still date and have sex as attraction doesnt equal action.
(Im aroace)
You can be gay and not have any sexual desires but I can see the ace aspecs
this is such an underrated video!! AAAAHH. i definitely read light as gay (and L too) and you definitely put it so eloquently into words :)
"Person suit"
Now where have I heard that before when talking about a very gay story of a detective and a serial killer plating mind games and being toxic while falling for each other?
damn what anime are you talking about
@@star_fru1tzits been a while, but the very gay and homoerotic show op is talking about is actually NBC’s Hannibal :)
i can't help but compare Light to Hannibal Lecter, the person suit, the queerness, the arrogance, the god complex, using women to hide...
Omg it’s true
To me Light reminds me of Norman Bates and Frank Abagnale JR

@@nuclearcatbaby1131 Being aromantic is a spectrum! :)
I haven't even watched the anime, I'm just here after the musical. Perhaps the most homoerotic show I've ever seen without any outright gay characters. Light/L is a great Enemies to Lovers (at least in the musical) of two people being obsessed with each other, understanding each other better than anyone else, lamenting that they have to give up their connection for one of them to win.
I loved the video!!! On a side note, I watched one episode of Death Note when I was ten and immediately dropped it (I might actually like it now, but, y'know, I was ten) because I didn't like how cocky Light seemed to be. I was like, "if you're so bored and insanely intelligent, go actually try to learn something new. You'll be just as much of a beginner as everyone else." Glad to find out I wasn't wrong that he was nutters.
I personally have always seen him as aromantic asexual
I see them aroace too, mostly ace, but its a spectrum. Aroace people can still date and have sex as attraction doesnt equal action.
(Im aroace)
@@somebodyoncetoldme4640 how can date and be aro at the same time.
Without lying
@@meijuta you may have a misconception about aro and ace people. Attraction doesnt equal action. You may not have initial romantic attraction but you can still date. Dating doesnt require romantic attraction, as you can still love someone without looking at them and having a crush feeling for them. Same with finding someone sexually attractive and having sex.
Also its a spectrum, some people feel romantic or sexual attraction based on specific circumstances or scenarios.
Action doesnt equal attraction.
Theres sex repulsed aces, sex indifferent aces, and sex positive aces.
Same with aros and romance.
Its a spectrum too, like demi/grey/orchid/aego/nebula
You dont have to have attraction to people sexually to participate in the action of sex.
Its a spectrum too, so aroace people may have some or little attraction
This is broadly what aromantic is, theres microlabels that describe more specific type such as greyaro, demiaro, orchidaro

@@meijuta in this case, it isn’t black or white, and from what i can recall, people really can want to date for different reasons. it doesn’t have to be because they are in love. sometimes people can like the idea of dating, and it’s why they date people.
dating is seen as fun after all, it’s not only a gesture of care from both people, but it’s also very pleasing, as shown in media everywhere.
if it’s consensual and both parties are okay with the low level of romantic love, it is not abnormal to me. feel free to correct me on that, though

There is no way a man of his age and status would accept it. Sadly. Gay kids in Light’s generation did not have a good time.

ik i’m late to this, but i see it one of two ways:
- light *thought* he was aroace/seemed aroace (maybe not knowing the labels), just because of his lack of interest in women, while not considering the possibility of liking men
- he is on the aroace spectrum but also gay
(those are just my headcannons, though! i absolutely respect others, even if i have different ones)
Do a video of Platinum End next, I'm really interested in your opinion on that.
4:39 i live in Floridia so i have an attic
I'm a LawLight yet that was mostly kinda just nonsensical imo... sorry?
i felt exactly the same way when i saw it and felt weird. it felt like at some point the video was trying to seek some subconscious desire to “erase the possibility of his characters not to be straight” from the author, from i don’t really know where, i could have badly listened to it however?
but i sincerely feel like it would have been maybe better to simply keep the part of light facing similar struggles to non-straight people, since with the rest, it ends up feeling like the video has no conclusion towards its title.
i wonder if someone can correct me on that, if they understood the meaning of the video better than me.

Light's last name backwards is "Im a gay".
All the proof you need.

i agree, Light is definitely gay, like the author said he could never love a woman. Not only that, he feels 0 romantic attraction to any female characters, and his closest relationship is with L. yeah he's definitely gay lmao
Those very same details could very much also just make him ace. It'd be one thing if he was distraught L died, but he pretty much just gloats about it because "[he] won."
I love this but at the same time in an interaction with Misa, Light thinks he could fall for her, so maybe at best he’s Bi

@@Abcdefg-tf7cu Did you ever saw the scene? Search it here and you will see that L himself says to Light that he is going to massage his feets, and there's even a frame where L squeeze Light's feet and he says "Oi..." "You get used to it" and he almost moan there, is so queer coded, you just don't want to see it
@SakuraKurosaki1 It's not "queer coded." You saying "you just don't want to see it" is especially hilarious considering thay you are desperately trying to see imaginary "queer coding" (no such thing) in every single thing you see.

Light is gay. L is straight tho. :(
I have my doubts
Nah bro L aroace af
Looks like I finished the video. You do realize Bakuman is based off of the actual authors right? The Authors who are friends in real life. This isn't some giant cover up.
Seriously people? It’s not romanse.
I promise no one is coming to break your door down and force you to read or like L/Light erotica.
Also commenting helps this content creator more than if you’d chosen to just ignore content you supposedly don’t like.
@@amongruins4661 As a matter of a fact I did finish the video and I still stand by this comment. I don't care that commenting helps this creator, it's at no cost to myself and I don't like people being impoverished.
Anyways I don't like this weird attitude alot of girls have regarding male characters, where they think any two male characters which are friends are secretly homosexual. I did have a follow up comment where I did finish the video where I expounded upon what I said, if you keep scrolling you may find it (assuming you didn't find it by the time you have read this reply). Anyways, I still stand by what I say, viewing L and Light as gay is foolish.
