A couple of years ago, I volunteered for a homeless food program whereby we would take dinners to homeless in their tents. One volunteer was about to set some food on a guy sleeping on the sidewalk when the group leader said, "Stop! Don't put food on anyone who is sleeping. If you do, the person will be covered with rats within minutes". We saw some big, bold rodents that night. Downtown is a dirty, vermin-infested place. Not sure I'd want to eat there.

I'm retired from doing commercial pest control in California. Yes sanitation is a big issue with this and secondly the State of California has banned some rodenticides which I used to use and were very effective. It is always this tug a war with environmental issues regarding secondary poisoning and then rodents get out of hand. This happened in the protected Farallon Islands off the coast from San Francisco until permission was granted to use rodenticides due to a rodent population going out of control.

The rats were there long before the homeless. I lived in LA for 25 years. By the way, you may think the rats are gone but they are good at hiding and are practically impossible to get rid of once there is an infestation. Rats multiply faster than any other species. One reason why they are so hard to get rid of. Also, LA is one of the few cities that has no rat control program. The sewers in LA are teeming with rats.

It’s deeply concerning to observe the current rat infestation in Los Angeles, especially given the numerous vacant commercial buildings in the city. It’s unfortunate that while these buildings remain unused, many individuals are left without shelter, forced to live on the streets. While the issue currently seems limited to rodents, history has shown that rat infestations can lead to outbreaks of diseases like the plague. If such an outbreak were to occur, the consequences would not just be limited to the homeless population; even those with homes could be at risk. It’s imperative that we address the underlying social and environmental issues now before they escalate further.

That is exactly what it looks like. I was out there one night on the bus stop with a few people a couple and they started running across the doggone street. I like to have a nervous break down.
I was screaming so loud this man said ma’am, you can come to my room until it gets daylight or when the bus starts running again something like that girl why I had to go to this man’s room. And take a nap until the sun came up. I was devastated.😂😂😂😂😂

If good or trash is accessible, there will be rats. Closed trash containers, clean up the sidewalks, they will leave.

They should isolate two city blocks from the public and pets and set up traps for a few weeks, some type of poison that would kill and perhaps something that would effect the reproduction process.

LA is becoming more hopeless same as SF. Imagine a well-run beautiful city where families can enjoy all the arts, restaurants, and many points of interest, without tripping over homeless encampment and crimes lurking at every corners. Keep voting for the same craps Angelenos.
