  • In this video I spend $216 and 4 evenings to build a wood flatbed for my 1939 Ford Cabover Engine Truck.
My cab is sitting on a 2002 Dodge Durango chassis but you can use this method for any chassis.
Start with your support brackets welded to the chassis, build a support structure by attaching to those chassis brackets and then lay down the decking boards. EASY!
You can use this method for any chassis.

Great video. So is the wood frame you painted black bolted to the metal bed frame? Thinking of doing something similar to my 2002 ranger.

Yes. I built metal stanchions and welded them to the metal chassis. Then I used 4x4 treated lumber to lay on those stanchions giving me a flat surface to lay the 4x4 cross members. Then, I lay the 2x12 lumper on those cross members. Everything is welded or bolted with galvanized 3/8” carriage bolts.

@@ChadDrake4185 I don't have a MIG welder, but if I end up having to do some on frame welding I will probably pick up a stick welder. Took welding back in highschool a few years ago. I'm also considering getting an old flat bed truck in the future, would you say they are worth it? It seems like you did a full on restoration for this truck, I would more likely be buying something already running. I've seen a lot of older flat bed trucks (not the collectors kind) going for around $5k or less.

@@Death2Compromise I highly recommend a MiG welder. Super simple. I use a Lincoln 140 weldpak. It only uses 120v and welds everything I ever need. Plus, it has an aluminum spool gun so I can MiG aluminum too.

@@ChadDrake4185 Luckily, with the simple frame design of the ranger, I won't need to do any welding! 👍

I like the bed and the radius on the back piece. I think smaller radii on the top of the bed, front and back might look pretty cool. Keep up the good work and keep sharing those videos. I know they must be a pain to edit.

Thank you for the comment! Funny you mentioned editing.. I’ve been thinking about creating a TH-cam channel for about 4-5 years. Only thing that stopped me was the dread of editing and knowing it takes a good deal of time. Ironically, I actually really enjoy the editing now that I’m actually doing it. It’s tuff to start but once you start feeling the video “coming alive” it makes it very enjoyable to continue and finish it by putting all the clips together and adding music.
