I watch Ken Burns' documentaries whenever I find them streaming. He is so passionate about history. It was my favourite subject in school too and remains one 50 yrs later. Mand is amazing too.
I watch from Chicago. Our specific documentary guy is called Geoffrey Baer. Watch his content, if you want to try to figure out why our city is Mad Max.
I will watch ANY Ken Burns documentary. The details, the truth behind the myths, the wealth of information and the clear, concise explanation and narration is a must-watch for anyone and everyone. History buff or not Ken Burns is a master documentarian.

Fun fact: For Princess Bride, Rob Reiner offered Mandy Patinkin any role he wanted in the film. He didn't choose the starring role, but made Inigo Montoya the most memorable character in the movie.
My first Mandy Patinkin experience was him as George Surat in Sunday In The Park With George. He is such a brilliant actor and has an incredible voice. So much love and respect for him. 💙
That part about not “letting him off the hook” is THANKFULLY a mainstay of Burns’ work: he doesn’t pull any punches with his work. I knew he’d do that with the Roosevelts but holy shit were there some revelations about FDR that really hit me in the chest like a cinder block! It’s incredible what this guy does with history.
I love Ken Burns, I love history, and Ben Franklin is my favorite American. So much so that I named my son Benjamin. We're going to watch this together. I can't wait. :)

There are many good documentarians, but Ken Burns has something special that is his own unmistakable style and vision in his storytelling. It just rises above the rest. Two Beautiful Souls, collaborating on what i can only imagine will be a Wonderful Documentary!! There simply cannot be enough History told about Slavery, since most white people just still don't get how horrific it was, and frankly, the vestiges therefrom - still is!
It's like he's auditioning for the high school, senior show. Ken's very cool, it's great how he combines keen observations and insights into our history, with youthful enthusiasm and vigor. I've seen most, if not all of his docs. Loved 'em, esp the baseball, jazz and Muhammad Ali offerings. Excellent!
Ken Burnes Viet Nam taught me what actually happened there, from the French occupation to our tragic entry. The many concealed actions, and why it went on so long. Who profited, and why politics created more heartbreaking deaths. The miss-information, dis-information, and concealment of major problems to our country that contributed to that terrible occupation Now after so many years destruction to our troops, and the immense cost of the war has finally been revealed. I feel outrage towards those in power, who fed our youth into a nonstop blender of death. I also feel I understand more of why this happened.
What's really sad it they knew in 1965 we had no chance of winning this conflict. Westmoreland and McNamara refused to acknowledge it and when it was brought to Johnson's attention we were to far in to get everyone out.

He hired qualified printers and supplied the equipment to setup their printing companys and split the profits. This also made it possible to distribute news and information quickly through the new country. This gave him plenty of time to invent and set up so many institutions.
I live in Birmingham, UK. There was a scientific group centred around here (including Erasmus Darwin, Charles' grandfather). Franklin used to drop in to their meetings in Soho House whenever he was in the area.
when you hear the phrase "life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" was penned by Jefferson as " life liberty and property" but Franklin made him change it to ensure the support of poor people or those who did not own property, too.
Jefferson came from affluence, died in debt. Franklin had experienced want & didn’t own property until he worked very hard & long hours to purchase it. Still today, some of the best people in political leadership have faced hardship, were not trust fund babies. Sometimes you have to have experience in similar situations to empathize with others.
I’ve seen Franklin’s written comments on the first draft of the Declaration of Independence at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. You can probably see it online now. It was interesting that Jefferson asked Franklin first for his input. Reading his comments in the margins is inspiring. The fact that Jefferson took those comments and suggestions seriously and incorporated them in the final draft of the Declaration says that he was humble and wise enough to realize that having someone else whom he didn’t always agree with on matters relating to the run up to the Revolutionary War was necessary to make that document as powerful as possible not only then but now also. Most Americans are not aware of this important fact.
I have to find out more about Ken. Mandy always has my vote. What a talent ...in all mediums.. I am certain that Ken Burns has an amazing body of work & I look forward to enjoying his productions as well.
Ken's been a legend for decades. The Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, National Parks, etc. His storytelling and historical detail is brilliant. I've been a fan for 33 years. Been watching him since college. Check him out.
Benjamin Franklin has always had a piece of my heart for his words, his diplomatic efforts and his practical solutions, the fire department and the post office and the realization that slavery was wrong....and doing some about it!😍
Franklin obviously didn't invent the idea of a library. What he did come up with was a subscription library that allowed people of modest means, who could not afford many books, to share what books they had and then contribute money to buy more that all members would have access to. Books were expensive, and the purpose was for people who weren't rich to be able to improve their education and knowledge. That was pretty innovative.
I am Canadian. I never have missed a Ken Burns documentary. I recorded & just watched this 2 part series. I wish a documentarian in Canada would utilize the format Mr. Burns uses in the telling of our history. The art, or photos from the era, various actors voicing roles, not acting the roles, feels so like you are hearing voices coming through the ages to the here & now. I always learn things & am enthralled from beginning to end. I am, also, always glad that I have recorded them, as I rewind & pause to enjoy the art or photos chosen, or listen again to some prophetic wisdom, or amusing story. The music is always fitting. Simply the best!!!
OMG!!! I've been in lust with Mandy Patinkin since Princess Bride! He can act., he can sing and he is just plain amazing! I quit watching Criminal Minds when he quit. It wasn't the same show after that.

What I love: he always gave a 50 English pound donation (a lot of money then) to every new church that opened in his city, and he did exactly the same when the first synagogue opened. This shows his greatness of mind in a time and place where not all were treated equally. I’m sure he would have done the same if a new mosque had opened, but it was a bit too early for that. He was a very impressive person, if flawed like the rest of us mortals.

Often great people have flaws, and people (wives) who take care of the day to day drudgery & mundane allowing the greatness to flourish, some know that they are exactly that - a helper, others are possibly used & resentful. I doubt any one human can do a fraction of what the set out to do without others helping them in one way or another. Sadly egotistical people tend not to mention let alone that their helpers.
I can only hope his wife is honored because while he was living high on the hog in lavish surroundings for years, his dear wife never got any correspondence or answers to her many letters to him for years AND ran the farm and kept the newspaper going and invented sending it the mail and lived in difficultly. He lavished his daughter and corresponded with her rarely asking after his wife. Interesting, no?
I may be wrong but, Franklin “gave it away” because he was from the Quaker faith, wasn’t he? Quaker faith and practice is anything created from the gifts of God are to be given back to the world, for the good of the world. Not a bad ideology and I guess he popularized the “pay it forward” movement too? Wouldn’t surprise me and would explain the way he negotiated, fairly but without compromise as a man who feared God and loved Country and the ideals as the new beginning for a new world order over the tyranny of “Rule”. If he were alive today he would probably wonder WTF happened? We could all use more Politicians like him - especially today. Isn’t he the image for the basis of the Quaker Oats guy too? Franklin did not come from a Quaker family. He was also by far the least religious of the Founders, who were often Deists anyway and not very interested in religion. They were mostly men of the Enlightenment, which is why the United States was founded as the most modern and democratic country of its time, and which explicitly required a separation between church and state. It's tragic that the intellectual rigour of their legacy has been so eroded especially over the last 50 years or so.
@@meh8982 He did attend meetings, apparently his first he slept, was awoken by a member as the congregation was leaving. I have read Benjamin Franklin’s own (unfinished) biography he doesn’t dwell much on religious dogma.
Pretty sure Franklin didn't invent the library. May have invented the modern indexing system. Kids won't know that as probably many have been in a library for years.
Franklin’s stance on abolition was no doubt influenced by abolition movements in Europe. The movement against slavery in Britain had beginnings in the 1600s, and by the mid-1700s slavery was declared illegal on British soil. Alas, in British colonies this was not the case. And it took decades for those already enslaved in Britain to gain their freedom. The buying and selling of enslaved people was also banned on British soil. Franklin was certainly important for bringing the movement wider attention in the U.S.
You know this is more of a Charlie Rose episode the typical late night talk show setup. I mean when was the last time you heard of a documentary Creator and one of the voice only actors that stars in the documentary appearing together on the same talk show?

I did a quick calculation, Franklin’s donations were each worth over $10,000 US today. A very generous donation indeed.

Often great people have flaws, and people (wives) who take care of the day to day drudgery & mundane allowing the greatness to flourish, some know that they are exactly that - a helper, others are possibly used & resentful. I doubt any one human can do a fraction of what the set out to do without others helping them in one way or another. Sadly egotistical people tend not to mention let alone that their helpers.

I can only hope his wife is honored because while he was living high on the hog in lavish surroundings for years, his dear wife never got any correspondence or answers to her many letters to him for years AND ran the farm and kept the newspaper going and invented sending it the mail and lived in difficultly. He lavished his daughter and corresponded with her rarely asking after his wife. Interesting, no?

I may be wrong but, Franklin “gave it away” because he was from the Quaker faith, wasn’t he?
Quaker faith and practice is anything created from the gifts of God are to be given back to the world, for the good of the world.
Not a bad ideology and I guess he popularized the “pay it forward” movement too?
Wouldn’t surprise me and would explain the way he negotiated, fairly but without compromise as a man who feared God and loved Country and the ideals as the new beginning for a new world order over the tyranny of “Rule”.
If he were alive today he would probably wonder WTF happened?
We could all use more Politicians like him - especially today.

Franklin did not come from a Quaker family. He was also by far the least religious of the Founders, who were often Deists anyway and not very interested in religion. They were mostly men of the Enlightenment, which is why the United States was founded as the most modern and democratic country of its time, and which explicitly required a separation between church and state. It's tragic that the intellectual rigour of their legacy has been so eroded especially over the last 50 years or so.
@@meh8982 He did attend meetings, apparently his first he slept, was awoken by a member as the congregation was leaving. I have read Benjamin Franklin’s own (unfinished) biography he doesn’t dwell much on religious dogma.
Pretty sure Franklin didn't invent the library. May have invented the modern indexing system. Kids won't know that as probably many have been in a library for years.
He probably named it after his cousin, Dewey Decimal...

Franklin’s stance on abolition was no doubt influenced by abolition movements in Europe. The movement against slavery in Britain had beginnings in the 1600s, and by the mid-1700s slavery was declared illegal on British soil. Alas, in British colonies this was not the case. And it took decades for those already enslaved in Britain to gain their freedom. The buying and selling of enslaved people was also banned on British soil. Franklin was certainly important for bringing the movement wider attention in the U.S.
