What is happening in Ukraine might prove the savior of our own democracy, because it shines a bright light on what freedom means and how autocracy could take it away.
Yeah been hoping the same thing. I always think with Mitch and the Republicans they have such an egocentricial view and when their done cleaning out gay babies, blacks, and Mexicans who's next. I do think they are too stupid to admit they could be ever wrong or could ever say sorry for all their lies and slander.
If only more people in this country could recognize what is happening in this country today as autocracy. I hear so many people still excusing the Trump administration’s actions and claiming that Biden is somehow worse. It boggles the mind. Then there is all the stuff happening at the state and local levels… sigh.
It always amazes me that the people who claim to be the most patriotic and who wrap themselves in the flag and the US Constitution are the furthest away from the ideals and thoughts that our founding fathers had. They see this country in such a selfish, greedy and bigoted way. And when they are really asked to sacrifice just a little bit of their freedom for the benefit of all, they refuse to do so. They refuse to see faults or admit to them let alone try to change for the better. They view immigrants as liabilities instead of strengths. They don't want to learn our actual history or understand how it affects us currently. And they see violence as a means to an end and claim it as their right. We are in a struggle right now for our country's soul. Those who claim they want to save it actually are destroying it. Destroying it with lies, greed and bigotry. That's not a tribute to our founding fathers like Ben Franklin. Nor is viewing them with rose colored glasses. George Washington happily walked away from power when there were those who wanted him to stay in it and be another monarch. He did so because he wanted the country he loved to move forward. To grow and progress. To be a republic in every sense. Today, so many people who call themselves republicans don't even have a clue what that is about.
As a former christian conservative republican, I can personally attest to the truths you've laid out here. Trump being elected was the last straw for me. Trump and Trumpism, with all the assaults on our institutions, political norms and basic decency, is truly a cancer on American democracy. My hope is that, that same cancer will awaken more people like me. I admit that it seems unlikely to ever happen, as I have many family members that are blinded by indoctrination that's been programmed into them from birth. But,, I also have seen some progress in them, when I speak to their humanity as Mandy just did. Sadly, the most effective approach I've seen in combating this evil is raw power. I'm afraid it may take overwhelming victories at the polls and in the culture wars to finally push these extremists back to the fringes from whence they came. 🙏

From the mission statement in the first issue of the newspaper started by his grandson, Benjamin Franklin Bache. "The Freedom of the Press is the Bulwark of Liberty. An impartial Newspaper is the useful offspring of that Freedom. Its object is to inform. In a Commonwealth, the PEOPLE are the Basis on which all power and authority rest. On the extent of their knowledge and information the solidity of that Foundation depends. If the PEOPLE are enlightened the Nation stands and flourishes; thro’ ignorance it falls or degenerates."
I once read that Franklin said that instead of teaching classical Latin and Greek in our schools, Americans should learn the languages of the indigenous peoples, so as to be able to send ambassadors to work with them. How sad that this country went in such an opposite direction!
Powerful words from Ken and Mandy! I hope that they can get through to those firmly entrenched on the Left and the Right (someone send this video to the right because they probably are only watching Fox). Take a moment to listen to what is behind their beliefs and see if we can find some common ground and human decency. Remember no one is perfect but you can still learn new things late in life. Change doesn't happen quickly but it starts with an honest conversation.
I love Ken Burns and his documentaries, great stuff! 23andme said that I'm related to Franklin, but it also said I'm related to Stephen Colbert and a bunch of other people too.
Mandy that was the most profound speech that I have ever heard about us as a people on how we should be getting along with one another. My grandfather who passed long before I was born, as a uneducated fisherman in Deep Bay, Newfoundland Canada told my father as a young boy to simply "live and let live" . That statement to us now is both simple and complex. What he was teaching my Dad was to "go out in the world and enjoy his life the best way he could while being humble and kind to all others that he would be fortunate enough to meet. Kind of profound wisdom coming from an uneducated person when there's highly educated people currently who could use a life lesson like that. Great show Mr Colbert! Cheers from a big fan in Newfoundland.
Excellent observation and encouragement by Mandy Patinkin. He noted Benjamin Franklin had incredible patience and listening skills before invoking his opinion or suggestions. Tolerance and grace needs to be embraced by both parties for meaningful collaboration. Later in history, Lincoln noted, “A house divided cannot stand.” Present day extremists are like bullies on steroids making the tasks of listening, collaboration, and compromise, lost arts.
Oh wow! Sir Mandy Patinkin your speech is wonderful. Everything you said is powerful and so true. Be patient and listen and understand, climate change is not just happen. It happens in the past already and if we are not willing to listen understand and work together nothing could help humanity. You are so right some time the history is repeat it self. We are living in the planet and the circle back to the point that we will crush down. If we still continue to do the same. I appreciate the three of you sir and respectful sir.🙏🙏🙏💚💚💚
Having lived many decades, I must say that our country is more divided than I have ever seen. I do not believe the division is caused by the passionate opinions of our citizens alone. I believe the division is being cultivated and nurtured by internal and external forces who stand to benefit from the constant upheaval of the masses.
Ken! There at the interview's end your real passion revealed itself; thank you. So true what you said about being patient enough to fully listen to what is being said, to set aside personal opinions so that another's opinion can be heard-understood. The spirit of compromise was alive in Ben Franklin; sadly, that seems to have been lost somewhere along the way in our halls of government. I'm all for such spirit; however, I have a redline: sexism, racism, jingoism, environment destruction just for the sake of making profit (for the few no less!), all these great existential ills, defects, faults in our government, in ourselves, need to be addressed, overcome else our civilization remains in a tragic squirrel cage of endless decline-collapse-rebuild repeat.
It must be getting late... I really, really "connected" with Ken Burns' analogy of the Wilson soccer ball. I'm a writer myself, and this sort of cognitive analysis is right in line with my own experience! Thank you, Ken Burns, for making me feel that maybe I'm not as crazy as I often think I am! (Or maybe I am... That'll be for "others" to determine.

Humanism, Burns couldn't
have recruited better.
The passion of these men made me weep with tears of hope. Thank you!
And this right there, is why I love Mandy Patinkin. Beautifully said.
Mandy never fails to disappoint!! OMG!! HIS WORDS!! Amen my brother!!
WOW! Mandy Patinkin's oration at the end was terrific! Just, WOW!
Thank you!
I forgot 🤓
First to comment from the Philippines...! Stephen Colbert rocks!!
Hi from Alabama! And yes he does!
I once read that Franklin said that instead of teaching classical Latin and Greek in our schools, Americans should learn the languages of the indigenous peoples, so as to be able to send ambassadors to work with them. How sad that this country went in such an opposite direction!
Allelujah these 2 Men of Courage and Greatness!! THANK YOU ❤️
Powerful words from Ken and Mandy!
Inspiring. Thank you. Share this with everyone.
That was very powerful. It's exactly like America's history and we all are refugees! Never forget! 💛💙
All three of you are such eloquent speakers, quite the trio, Mandy actually brought a tears to my eyes
Mandy ...wow! You sir are well-spoken.
Mandy Patinkin. Your sir, are a true patriot. You make me proud to be an American but even more so, a member of the human race. Thank you.
God bless Mandy! Couldn't be said better and couldn't be more prescient to be said now
Mandy Patinkin you have the heart of a president
Mandy brought tears to my eyes today.
I adore Mandy, such a powerful message for the world, not just Americans.
Content, finally.
Wow! That was beautiful!✊🏼
Amazing speeches!! Truly have we lost sight what our founding fathers fought for?
You pop off, Mandy! He was revved and ready for his last moment on this show!
I love Mandy. I was so happy when he joined TikTok. He and his wife are hilarious. But they also use it as a platform to educate.
thank you MavenCree, didn’t know Mandy was on TikTok
I’ll check it out thanks to you 😊
Excellent observation and encouragement by Mandy Patinkin.
Well said, Mandy. Thank you from my heart and mind.
Well damn, Mandy! I come here for the laughs, and now I'm crying! Preach, my fellow human! Preach!
Amen, Mandy. Thank you for your words.
Mandy should run for office.
What a speech!
Wow. What amazing answers they gave.
God love this man.
Having lived many decades, I must say that our country is more divided than I have ever seen. I do not believe the division is caused by the passionate opinions of our citizens alone. I believe the division is being cultivated and nurtured by internal and external forces who stand to benefit from the constant upheaval of the masses.
Mr.Patinkin.Thank you. You are right.🇨🇦
Inspiring
Thanks, Mandy. We are all simply refugees buoyed by the bold choices of those who came before us.
I hope Stephen's team puts out a T-shirt 👕 that says Is 🥔 potato.
All proceeds could go to assist Ukrainian people
Here! Here!!
Thank you!! Patience and Compromise
Brilliant interview. We are all immigrants. We are all human beings.
I don't normally comment.....but, WOW! that was one beautiful piece of verbal inspiration from Mandy 😊
Unite not divide xx 👍❤
