Up in our little valley we don't treat our bees. We have a huge population of native black bees they don't seem to respond to any of the supplements available. As you have woodland apiaries, have you tried the pseudoscorpion method of mite control. We place empty hives and supers on the forest floor and leave them for a week in the spring. Then they go into use, with any critters that they have picked up.
We are in Ryton on Tyne. It's as far West as you can get on Tyneside. We keep our native black bees in our little valley, but we keep our Buckfast and other hybrids around ten miles away, to try to minimise cross breeding. It's bleak where we are and only the AMM thrive on the hills as it's constantly windy and a warm day is 12 degrees and we never get above 16 degrees in summer.
