    if this method is so effective ( i don't doubt it, it looks like a really good way to control Varroa mites ) why don't many people use it? This is like the first video i've seen to control Varroa so easily and naturally.

    Thanks a lot FBM for your nice video.
    I live in Chile (SouthAmerica), my fogger is traveling from China (here is very expensive and very hard to find)......I have had bees for 12 years........I recomend always , when you going to control varroa, make a mite count before and after threatment in order to be sure what really happens. I use the "alcohol wash" method.
    Kind regards

      Mr. Gomez, I live at 6800 feet in Wyoming. Assuming you may be up in the clouds too. Are mites any less of an issue at higher elevations? Does it affect when in the year you spray?

    Hey Don, hope your fall is going well. I went out and purchased a fogger and some mineral oil to fog my two hives for the first time today. The temperatures are in the 60s here in virginia. Like many beekeepers I want to keep things as natural as possible and hey, maybe the mineral oil will help the bees on their cleansing flight. 🐝

  • @IxNiLaTiS_33
    @IxNiLaTiS_33 11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If you inhale the fog, the oil or paraffin will come into your lungs and closed alveoli. The Paraffin does not get out from your lungs easily, and if you use paraffin fog often, then you will have respiratory problems like you smoked 60 cigarettes a day for ten years .
    If you use the fogmaker, you should always wear a special mask.
    That told me a professor from the University of Thessaloniki.

    Tonight we examined a bee that was crawling and my son picked off the mite with tweezers. He got some good footage of the mite under the microscope. He put a toothpick with tea tree oil to the mite and some other organisms immediately jumped off the mite. He thought it was paramecium living off the mite but could it be mite offspring? Anyways, that was the effect he got from the tea tree oil. We are currently feeding the bees with tea tree oil sugar water. I really hope that helps.

      +chugbry I did try it and the bees seemed to have winterized ok. They are bringing in pollen already. I haven't actually opened the hive up yet though.

    • @chugbry
      @chugbry 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +k2katster: Great, would be good to know the results when you get to open up your hive.. We gotta get a head start over those peaky varroa. I did see also someplace that there's a guy in europe who is using a heating source to heat up hives to 40 degreesC i believe and he is killing off the varroa as the bees can stand above 40 degrees but the varroa cannot. He tried heaters but that didn't work so good so he now tried the sun with solar cells of some type and it seems to be working. will be good to know when someone gets a safe natural means to definitely wipe out varroa.

    Hey Don, Thank you for all the information and honesty . I am geared up with oac. questions i have for you please are , what time of year would i start using this?, i am located in central NC and do not want to apply to early. also i know your in the business of bees and just would like to verify that oac is ok to use with supers on when wanting honey? i have also seen where after the three 6 day treatment is complete that some continue to use this method once a month until the first frost would you recommend doing so for both new packages and established hives generating honey or is that practice only for people who sell bees ? or should i do a sugar roll once a month to determine mite counts of all hives and treat any hives with high mite counts only vs the once a month. sorry to be so long winded, trying to be as accurate as possible. as I know this mineral oil is toxic for humans and is forbiten in US ...right?Food grade mineral oil (FGMO) applied with an insect fogger was evaluated for varroa mite control in honey bee colonies by comparison to an industry standard, coumaphos strips, and an untreated control group (eight colonies per treatment group). During the six-week test period, the Varroa populations increased in untreated colonies and those treated with FGMO, while those treated with coumaphos strips decreased greatly and, consequently, averaged 96.1 to 99.4% fewer Varroa than the untreated colonies at the end of the test period, by the alcohol wash and sticky board methods, respectively. In addition to providing no control for Varroa, FGMO applied in an insect fogger may pose a fire and/or health hazard to beekeepers and bees.

      @@2BMaree you have them though and if you breathe mineral oil in its vapour form or oxalic acid evaporated you will be in intensive care fairly quickly and the cure is not known. Oxalic Acid crystallized on your lungs will cause severe breathing difficulties and destroy the lung surface micro biometrics which is essential for healthy lungs. Tar from smoking is also deadly never smoke. The lungs finally deflate and haemorrhage causing the individual to choke to death on blood not pleasant to witness. If you ever treat with a fogger wear a full face mask that is designed for organic acid vapour blocking. Best of all purchase some mite biter queens and let them produce bees that control the mites as no treatment is required.

      What type of organic plants are you using to get rid of varroa mites? Would love to use total organic, non-invasive methods with least amount of components/contraptions owned.

    Can you use the Fogger with Oxalic Acid?

    • @brianhultquist4281
      @brianhultquist4281 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I use the Burgess better fogger with Oxalic Acid and Grain Alcohol. Works great. 21 day cycle. 7, 7, 7, and the once every 3 weeks. Fog until gas come out the top. You will need to wear protective breathing protection. You should expect to spend 60-80 dollars for the quality mask. Read before purchase. Not all mask are created equal.
