I absolutely agree with all you’ve said. Still, if I like the color ways, I don’t mind cutting and manipulating the color order! No matter what, I feel I’m weaving in fewer ends! 😉. Thanks for your suggestions. I look forward to your upcoming project! 👍🏻🍀
I do like some of these for prayer shawls. I try to make sure I get ones that start in the center with the same color and it seems to work out with little fuss. Love your projects and thank you for sharing your talent. God Bless!
They are good for some project but not for others. I tend to enjoy them for shawls but prefer to pick my colors on blankets .thanks for the tips. You’re the bomb as teenagers say today.
I prefer the yarns that are more of an ombre effect, opposed to a stripe. You don't seem to notice the color change as much. My eye is drawn to that abrupt color change as well. Plus having to find the skeins that go together haha. It can be a lot of work, for something that was supposed to take the "work" out of color changes. That could be my own OCD though lol. It would be nice if more of the yarn companies would come out with matching single color skeins, to match the stripe cakes. Plus some of the colorways are just not my cup of tea. I think they are best suited for smaller projects (hats, scarves, mitts) where you'd end up with a fun and funky set, as opposed to a large project, where you end up cutting and tying anyway.
Charlene Andersen I agree! Some Indy dyers have come up with excellent options that I think you would love, but of course they will cost a bit more. The ones I have used like this have been a joy to crochet!
I agree, I like the ombre effect the best. Unfortunately the only yarn I know of that has that is Red Heart stripes. I'm currently working on a project with it now, and will be glad when I'm done. There are a lot of places the yarn is not twisted right, and my hook will snag. I would love to find another yarn with the same effect. (Economical enough for large projects)
Glad you did this one! I swear striping yarns are the bane of my existence here! I've found they are ok for smaller projects like scarves or shawls... for me at least. I attempted an afghan just once, and frogged it finally. I'd stopped and started the yarn and pulled out yarn numerous times... and ended up buying yarn enough for several afghans. My problem, is my eye, is immediately drawn to where the color changes, if you just let the yarn play out on it's own? With it ending mid row.... I guess I just have a touch of OCD, it's blaring, my mind and eyes can't take it and it looks like a huge blaring mistake. So for me, I stick with smaller projects with the striping yarn... and I'm fine. I stayed away from these yarns for a very long time though. I love the scarves and shawls though! Anyhow, sorry about the novel here, and once again thank you for doing this. I love your work and patterns :)
You are so right about that! It really is a preference thing, but I don’t like too much going on in a design. I like this yarn for baby blankets because it adds so much stimulation for little eyes. I don’t enjoy this so much for afghans with a lot of stitch texture. Too much competition!!
@@BonnieBayCrochet Had not thought about the 'stitch competition'. I'm guessing that is why I prefer to use only a few... 2 max 3... colors in afghans with a lot of texture. I've tried using multiple colors and ended up frogging them. Not fun. Thanks for this video. As others, love the striped yarns for smaller projects.
I find them both amazing n annoying, lol! I find no knots to be totally amazing in my projects, but a color change mid row annoys me to no end. This causes me to go to my extra cake to finish the row with the same color, then reconnect the next color back in. I've been using the Russian join trying to avoid those knots.
I cannot stand when I see projects that start on the center and the center is a hideous blob. In the Mandala FB if anyone shows a pic of where they have cut their yarn(their own yarn) they get nasty comments on how everyone should "let it flow". No way can I let a yarn rule my design, I am in charge of my yarn. I use magic knots or I just pick up the correct color. So many otherwise gorgeous designs are ruined bc many people are either scared to cut it or too lazy to do so. I agree with you 100000000% about US manipulating the yarn, not the other way around.
Oh, I should have watched this tutorial before I started my baby blanket! I did get toward the end of the blanket when I ended with gray and a new skein started with blue! It doesn't look too bad since it's a small blanket but I will definitely use your advice for my next blanket! I do like working with Premier Sweet Roll color yarns! Thank you,
I use a lot of the Swiss and German bobbles. The color changes are very gradual, one thread changing color at a time. This means a very small knot. However, they are also frequently not twisted. I thought I would hate it, but it really doesnt bother me. Some of these companies are now selling deconstructed Bobbles for folks that want to control their color changes a little more. If I am using a Caron cake, I look at the order of the colors in the skeins when I buy them. I plot which order to use them in so that my color changes are fairly consistant.
I love to look at cake yams, i buy them for their beauty. I rarely crochet with them because of my ocd, it is difficult for me because i need the colors to end exactly on a row!! I'm going to try the ones that have a gradual change because i wan to to use them because of their beauty and less knots with color changes!♡♡
Yarn addict aka K lo I agree! The gradual changes are so pleasing to the eye. I was surprised how drastic the color changes were when the cakes first arrived in the marketplace.
I think if you can get the colorway to hit just right that would be great. However, we are not machines. You would have to get the gauge exactly right. I do plan to try them out soon. I'll start with the Ombre then work my way to the color blocking, just out of curiosity.🙂 Thanks for the tip and the vid.😉
Yes, these automatic (harsh) color changes can be pretty persnickety. That's why I prefer the gradual changes personally. Either way they do add some spice for the crochet journey!
Really great tips, Bonnie! I think the self stripping yarns are amazing and annoying along with some of the other comments. They are so pretty and they always pull me in but sometime I regret using them. I will remember your tips and I'm sure it will be a more enjoyable experience. btw, I love that shawl pin and shawl you're wearing. I'm looking forward to the new project on your hook.
I made a large blanket using Bernat Pop, and wanted to add a solid colour border,. No one, including Bernat, had any yarn in any of the colours that were in the Bernat yarn cakes.
most of the time I don't like the color combos in the yarns.. and if you lengthen a pattern by adding to the foundation chain...they stirps dont change correctly then I have to frog the whole thing
Thank you Leigh! This is the Arrow Asymmetrical Scarf. It is available as a single pattern or with my latest book, complete video tutorials for all the designs included (videos not available publicly).
Leigh Randall: Her book is called: Cable Crochet Made Easy. Is a great book with written instructions and links to every project in the book so you can watch her teaching you how to crochet each project. I love the book. Got it from Amazon.
Can you pls address the the yarn join? I learned to crochet yrs ago using a library book, which stated you must knot your working yarn to your new yarn which always leaves me a little bulky area, not too obvious but?? I’ve done the attaching the yarn mid stitch which is nice and easy but a little nag in the back of my head says “ You better knot it or all your work is going to come undone eventually”. (Does it or better yet can it come undone?). I’m just a worrier that all my hard work will be for naught.
TammieTalks that’s a great question! I may have to make another video about that soon. There are so many opinions about this out there. Personally I like to use a knot, especially if the fabric allows for the knot to be well hidden. Thanks for this great topic suggestion.
Hi. Just stumbled upon your channel. I have watched two of your videos. I really your practical advice. Both times I thought to myself that I want to hear more. Also, I just bought a huge amount of self-striping yarn because it was on sale. The whole thing about the color change never occurred to me, so thank you for that information. Unfortunately, I watched your other video about choosing yarn for a sweater. I wasn't aware of this, but I have the same reaction to acrylic that you have. It makes me hot, and my body doesn't like it for extended periods of time. I actually thought it was just a particular blanket, but now I think it might be all acrylic that makes me too hot. So of course what did I buy on sale? Before I knew this of course. A lot acrylic self-striping yarn. Yikes! So they're going to have to be outer garments I guess... if you have any suggestions on that front, I would appreciate it. I do think that in order to compensate for the heat-trapping effects of acrylic, that I would try for an open work type of fabric... Anyway, will subscribe. Happy New Year!
Welcome aboard AR! Maybe you can you your acrylic for gifts for others! Lots of folks love wearing acrylic, and it is great for baby blankets and such. SOLUTION: When you buy your yarn, choose the skeins that have the same center color. Once I started doing this, I have not had issues with the changing colors. I hope this helps all the happy hookers out there! oops that came out wrong, but it made me laugh so I didn't change my comment.

Sandra Hilliard ha ha! Thanks! I actually understood that and I agree with you on choosing your projects carefully for these yarns.
Thank you for that explanation. Are there projects where using the whole cake of yarn from start to finish is suitable, eg blankets.

I’ll be sure to bone up on that technique! Thanks!
Just stumbled on this video ~ very helpful. I prefer variegated yarn like the scarf you're wearing. Do you remember what kind of yarn you used?
I got this yarn from my local yarn store. It is hand dyed by “Yankee Dyer” I believe. She has a store on Etsy.

I bought some of the Lion brand self stripping yarn that is driving me crazy. I don’t know how to use it apparently because it never comes out right!
I understand that Joetta! Sometimes these yarns are hard to control.
Both!
Yep! I’m with you on this!
I do not like the ones with abrupt color changes, which seem to be the bulk of them. I do like the ones with gradual gradient color changes.
