  • This presentation provides an introduction to the book titled: SIMPLE-G: A Gridded Economic Approach to Analysis of Sustainability of the Earth’s Land and Water Resources, edited by Iman Haqiqi and Thomas Hertel, and published by Springer. Chapter 10 explores the connection between R&D expenditures and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. It uses the non-gridded version of the model, SIMPLE. The chapter begins by discussing historical trends in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) intensity and then explores how these will change in the future under alternative productivity growth scenarios. Future productivity is tied to current investments in research and development (R&D) which, in turn, contributes to productivity-enhancing knowledge capital. Findings show that R&D investments are a cost-effective means of abating GHG emissions from agriculture. For more details, please visit the SIMPLE-G webpage: www.gtap.org/s...
Keywords: Total factor productivity, GHG emissions, R&D investment, knowledge capital, climate mitigation
