- Athena Asamiya is the most renowned female character in both our world, and in the King Of Fighters lore.
She is a famous idol and a skilled Kung-Fu fighter with psychic abilities who made her debut in another SNK title: Psycho Soldiers.
In this video, I'll try to explain everything about her, like her idol career, the origins of her powers, and her relationship with Princess Athena.

Athena knows Kensou has a crush on her. But her career as a pop idol gets in the way. Once a pop idol starts dating, the career is over, since being single keeps fans fantasies alive. Sad but quite true
She didn't think much about her career when she was into Kyo though.

Man, I really hope Momoko makes a return. She was so cute and I enjoyed her visual move set. She looked like a little ferret and her giant fluffy seal plush was my favourite part.

I definitely enjoyed this history of Athena Asamiya, I use her a lot in King of Fighters All-Star, especially her Special Signature variation.
She's nice and innocent she has the blood of millions on her hands. Psycho sword, psycho ball and teleportation and everything.
she is one of the best characters from kof, in my opinion.

Also yeah I'm gonna agree with you on her pretending to not notice Kensou's feelings. Heck in SNK Heroines Luong straight calls her out on it for not trying to be honest with him and possibly not being honest with her own feelings. Sure in a franchise with no aging there's no pressure, but she's gotta be honest with Kensou sometime in the future.

Wow. I am impressed. I was expecting you to say that she was an annoying character that everyone hates, and I would have unsubscribed right there, but you didn't. Well done. Very well done. And you even mentioned why Athena is my favorite character: "modest and humble", unlike Mai and Yuri...
I think the main reason why Athena avoids Kensou's advances is because she is an idol. Japan has that idol culture where there is a rule that idols are forbidden to be in a relationship. I think Athena does like Kensou, but she does not want to admit it because it may jeopardize her career. I remember a quote from Athena in Maximum Impact where she says "The day my heart belongs to one person is the day I stop being an idol." Athena liking Kensou may also be implied after reading the translated lyrics for "Tachi Bou Ke". I'm going to assume that Kensou will finally confess to Athena when he is able to fully utilize his latent power. Anime tropes and stuff...

Many hate Athena because of her magical girl shenanigans during online matches (the same way they hate Ryu in SF2 for spamming Hado kens). But as a character, she is a lovely person. Why would anybody hate her for that?You also made an interesting point about her idol career getting in the way of her romantic life. It actually makes sense.

The change in kensou is amazing. His fighting style only gets better as the games go on.
Some sources refer to classic Athena's heavenly kingdom as Kingdom of Victory.
Athena also seems to summon/embody the classic version of the character in a super in SNK Vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium for the NGPC.
Also, both the KoF: KYO manga and the animated KoF Destiny series, (and maybe the Athena - Awakening from the Ordinary Life game) depict her as having some ability to read minds... which added to everything else kinda makes her seriously overpowered.
I think all of her team mates have some level of mind reading ability, with the psychic powers and all.
Cross the Multiverse they are called psycho soldiers superpower team so.
Indeed, the mind reading stuff makes her look like a cute version of Orochi.
I just got into KOF and FF thanks to Smash introducing me to Terry and these videos have been very helpful so thank you! I'm looking forward to when you're able to do a video on him.

I just found your channel after I did a deep dive on nostalgia and started playing old KOF games during lockdown. I always loved some of the characters, but to hear this much of their background was really nice! Thank you for the videos.

I think their psycho powers, Especially since Athena is the reincarnation of the goddess Athena, has a gene that keeps her young and for some reason, younger as each year goes by? I guess to help her keep fighting while Orochi keeps reviving itself. Creating the perfect guardian. Almost sounds like my character..... with a few differences.
She never fights Orochi though, that guy is more the problem of Kyo, Iori, and Chizuru.

Athena is one of my most favorite KOF characters, only next to K'. I do like her combination use of psychic powers and Kung-Fu. I also love her backstory as a reincarnation of the Goddess Athena, really wish that her story in KOF has a lot more than we got, and it is too bad that the KOF series dropped the Dragon Powers/Ron plot very quickly for some reason, I really wish they can continue with that plot. Also Momoko should make a return too.
Also, did you know that there is a horror game from SNK that is also starring Athena as a main lead? I heard it is not a good game, but I wouldn't mind if SNK explore this concept once again.

you did made lore video of a Psycho Soldier but i didn't expected it's Athena and you also made an brief explanation on her trademark move"Psycho Medley 13" and also what was Ron's connection on every ending of the Psycho Soldiers team from N.E.S.T. saga onwards like it always make me wonder how powerful is Kensou actually that makes Ron interested in him, and its bummer because Ron never appeared again after KOF 11, i hope they will bring him back again in KOF XV or even as a playable character if possible,

That was a very extensive history on Athena and the Psycho Soldiers. I appreciate the work that went into this. I can easily see this being a popular Japanese television series from the mid-1980s that never happened.
I like Athena mostly cause her outfit changes each installment also good all round fighter

There was an Arcade followup to Athena called, Psycho Soldier where Kensu is introduced. It played differently to the original but its where the "Psycho Soldier " theme tune originated.
One of my mains in the KoF series (Mai, Yuri, Leona, and Terry are the others), she is always my first pick when I play any KoF games I have (the whole 2D saga on PS2, from 94-03, XI, Neowave, 98 UM, and 02 UM. 94 I have via Rebout, 99-01 I have via the Japanese Nests Saga collection, 95-97 via the Japanese Orochi Hen collection). The rare time I play KoF XIII, and I do mean rare as I don't like it all that much, she is my first choice. I also tend to pick Hotaru for Garou MotW and KoF XI, and Akari from Last Blade 1 and 2. They both tend to be solid fighters for little girls, I almost feel like they are both overpowered to a degree.
