About his love for arcades, in the 90s he founded a company called VICCOM that distributed arcade games from Japan to South Korea, most of these were Neo Geo machines. That is the main reason why SNK was so popular in that country. The real Kim Kaphwan suggested SNK to create a taekwondo fighter and put him in Fatal Fury 2, SNK not only did that but also named that character after the founder of VICCOM You know what is cool? The name of the son of the real Kim Kaphwan is Kim Jae Hoon meanwhile the name of the brother of Kim Kaphwan is Kim Dong Hwan. Wonder what would've happened if SNK had gone through with the original idea for Kim in '99 where you could play as his crazy alter ego. There's a sprite sheet of some concepts for what would eventually become Jhun Hoon and one of them is allegedly the alter-ego
I've been meaning to comment on this video for a while. Been too busy to do so though. Kim is, by far, my absolute favorite fighting game character ever. For one, I'm half Korean. When I started playing fighting games, I began with Street Fighter. I thought I enjoyed the game until I tried King of Fighters. And that's when I saw him...Kim...in all his glory. The exquisite quality of his animations, his amazing personality, and the fact that he didn't need to hurl a single fireball at you to f*** you up. He was my favorite right from the start. There is a lot to say about Kim Kaphwan. He's an especially important character as he was one of the first game characters to feature Tae Kwon Do. And his movements in each game were crisp and extremely fluid. I didn't realize how excellent his animations were until I watched a video by Sugarpunch, which was a eulogy to Kim's pants. It never dawned on me that the speed you feel when using Kim derived heavily on how well his pants animated. The loose fit of the pants would mean they would whip about whenever Kim kicked, conveying blurring speeds and power. And as crazy fast and acrobatic as Kim could get in a match, he utilized rather conventional kicks expected of a Tae Kwon Do practitioner--making him a rather accurate representation. More importantly, Kim kickstarted an amazing legacy in the King of Fighters series. For a while, he was always assisted by Chang and Choi. But eventually, we were introduced to his righteous student May Lee, his bitter rival Jhun Hoon, the lascivious Luong, the wayward master Gang-Il, and his own two children, Dong Hwan and Jae Hoon. What surprises me the most out of Kim's legacy of supporting characters is the fact that they all specialize in Tae Kwon Do--but none of these characters fight like one another. Kim, May Lee, Jae Hoon, and Gang-Il adopt more traditional styles of Tae Kwon Do. Chang and Choi utilize their own fighting styles with splashes of Tae Kwon Do here and there. Jhun and Luong adopt a much more fantastic and imaginative interpretation of Tae Kwon Do. And Dong Hwan sports a very loose interpretation of the style with an emphasis on flash and aesthetics. There's also Chae Lim of the Maximum Impact series who is not canon to the main storyline. Ultimately, all these characters feel very different in actual gameplay when compared to Kim. There is only one character I have trouble accepting: Choi. The dude is factually a demented serial killer. Otherwise, I can say that I appreciate every supporting character in Kim's official canon. Can I say the same about the canon of other characters? No. The Kyokugen cast comes close, but does not have as nearly many characters as the Kim team. Ryu's canon in street fighter? Most would argue that Ken, Akuma, Sean, and Dan fit the definition of palette swaps. The characters that emerged from Kim's canon are truly special in this regard. We see so many permutations of Tae Kwon Do succeeding Kim, but none of them seem particularly repetitive or hokey. I think this is a pretty remarkable design achievement.
KIM is one of my mains.. I always choose someone who use real martial arts, ryo and kim is fun to use.. I hope next there will be martial arts team(they must be using their gi), the members will be ryo(karate), kim(tae kwondo), goro daimon(judo)... Thanks! I always wanted to know what Jae Hoon was talking about when he beat Freeman and said his father was avenged. Knowing Freeman, I thought for sur Kaphwan was dead.

One of the greatest sink character sir all time! Question though is it true that he is the same skill level as takuma or is that gang il I think in kof 96-97 he was in the special edit masters team.
He kinda did. They had reformed by 2003 but then they got arrested trying to defend a friend at a bar. And apparently the Korea Team won KOF 97 according to one of the light novels but who knows if it's still canon?
You know i'd almost feel bad for chang and choi if I didn't know they weren't hardened criminals who aren't above murder and probably would have had it harder in prison anyways. Lodging and meal wise at least.
On an unrelated note, while it is more likely that he would get his brains blown out, I sincerely hope that Kim would find out about the Squid Games and put a stop to them.
Kim is his family name (last name). Kim is the most common surname (last name) in the Korean kingdom. In South Korea, it’s proper for the family name to be written first. Hence Kim Kaphwan . 🇰🇷
Great video on The Crown Jewel Of Tae Kwon Do & Champion Of Justice. Kim was the first Tae Kwon Do stylist I saw in a video game. Him, Mai, Krauser & Cheng were my favorite characters introduced in Garou Densetsu 2. Btw how are you able to find some of this back story in the Ryuuku No Ken/Garou Densetsu timeline? With the exception of the ones that appear in KOF I have a hard time finding more info for people like Raiden aka Big Bear, Lawence Blood, Ryuhaku Todoh, Jack Turner etc.
Terry Kim and Ralf are my mains in KOF series. Seeing Kim now more of an anti hero than a hero due to his harsh training or you can say you cannot change bad apples like Choi and Chang. Either way Mae Lee was great addition I prefer her moves over Jhun as for Kim, his sons carry his legacy. My future KOF team for him would be him and his sons.
I feel like now Kim is just gonna have a taste of his own medicine. I wonder what would happen if Kim finds out that Raiden and Hwa had reformed but used Kim for their images? He would probably beat them up and if he manages to escape from his master may probably use his harsh reformed training on them or it'll be that his master would like show you how to properly reform them and you be a part in the reformation and Kim be like ""oh no."
Kim is rush down character, fun to use, doesn't have projectile, but have a lot of mid attack variation, and a lot of close range combo variations, his 2D animations was absolutely breathtaking, I mean look at his pants animation.. so insanely fluid.

Master : Gang-Il. (KOF XIV)
Son : Kim Jae Hoon and Kim Dong Hwa. (Garoû : MOTW)
Chae Lim is also his student.
Kim and her have a father and daughter relationship.
Kim isn't a nickname, it's his family name... That's like saying Jordan is Michael Jordan's nickname.
In KOF Maximum impact 1, Chae Lim replaces Kim Kaphwan. KOF - Kim vs Hwoarang and Baek from Tekken - good dream matches.
Awesome video dude 👍
Always love your videos
great vid mate
Thanks for the visit
Hoo thanks so much for doing this! He is my favorite SNK Character from all the time
Very good video...
Please make a video on MAY LEE too... It's a request...
He is my favorite character in the series
Great Job Bro!
He was a driving force behind me training in Tae Kwon Do
One of the greatest sink character sir all time!
Question though is it true that he is the same skill level as takuma or is that gang il I think in kof 96-97 he was in the special edit masters team.
Nope... If kim defeated by terry, and terry is equal to ryo.. So takuma is above kim, takuma invent his own karate style that's remarkable..
Kim reminds me of the martial arts i meet when i was 10 who took himself seriously
and i wasn't try to laugh at him when he talked about his P.O.V.
Another great vídeo!
Kim is the best character ever . I like his fighting style , sense of justice and his handsomeness
dont ever stop man u da best
"Kim" is not a nickname, it is his family name.
This guy is extremely skilled and technical.
Deep Down I really want Kim to succeed with Chang and Choi
He kinda did. They had reformed by 2003 but then they got arrested trying to defend a friend at a bar. And apparently the Korea Team won KOF 97 according to one of the light novels but who knows if it's still canon?
You know i'd almost feel bad for chang and choi if I didn't know they weren't hardened criminals who aren't above murder and probably would have had it harder in prison anyways. Lodging and meal wise at least.
CAN'T WAIT FOR KOF 15!!
One detail was not presented in this video....
The tradition of animating his pants like no other ever in every KoF.
My favorite combo out this world
Who's here upon seeing the announcement of his return? :)
Great video!!
Thanks!
okay i'm loving it a lot . please background story for shrime , mai , candy
I dont play with hazards on in smash but in the kof stage for smash and if kof characters attack on stage that whould be an exception
I love the idea that Kim somehow didn't recognize that Raiden is Big Bear.
U r amazing man, thnx for all storys.
I Enlightenment
cause of u. Thnx again.
You're welcome.
Should do a video on his team team Korea 🇰🇷 & Videos on Choi & Chang!!. And a video of Jhun Lee May & Gang iL
I hope he becomes an antagonist, it will not only be interesting, but it will also fix his character flaws.
My Favorite Character In The Game, Kim Is The Best
the kim brothers were fun as fuck to play wit
Terry Kim and Ralf are my mains in KOF series. Seeing Kim now more of an anti hero than a hero due to his harsh training or you can say you cannot change bad apples like Choi and Chang. Either way Mae Lee was great addition I prefer her moves over Jhun as for Kim, his sons carry his legacy. My future KOF team for him would be him and his sons.
tame a bad boy is the best song in KOF 13. and you can quote me on that.
Athena and psycho soldiers next please
Freeman is my second favorite character in Garou next you should do Ikari warriors or whichever character/Team either way I enjoy your videos.
Excellent material like always can you do one for Tung Fu Rue next?
Kim Chang and Choi i think were my first favorite team ever
great vid
Thanks!
Kim is So damn awesome he's got a lot of Impressive Moves 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿🗣HELL YEAH
