I hate to say it but I love the humiliation pics when you guys don't photograph your food. I don't want to say that I'm supporting you desire to snack and not picture it...but I am.
Little PSA in re: six packs. Visible abs are almost entirely just a byproduct of low body fat. Hypertrophy plays a small row, but no matter how many planks you do, if there's fat on top, no one is going to have a six pack. I talk about the three stages of Ab Feels with folks I coach: 1. "I will do sit ups, I will get a six pack." False, see above. 2. "Wait, my six pack is already down there, I just need to be lean enough to see it!" Cool, and good luck, but have fun being weak AF when you have little to no core stability. 3. "My core strength is a necessary element of nearly all types of functional strength. I will work my core so that I can get better at everything else; if my efforts lead to a lean torso and therefore a six pack, that is just icing on the cake." Aah, enlightenment ☺️
Pgi99 How so? I'm honestly curious. Fat loss as part of a well-rounded fitness regimen, of course. But one can diet their way down to visible abs without any concerted effort put toward midline stabilization - I know that one first hand. My general point still stands, however. Body composition determines whether you have a "six pack" more than ab exercises; the degree to which a six pack is visible is not directly correlated with midline strength.
I saw you guys recommended the TH-cam channel "Yoga with Adrienne" on the community tab and I just want to say YES! A THOUSAND TIMES YES! I do one of her videos every morning (sometimes I go for a short 10 mins one, sometimes I'll do a 40mins one) and she is absolutely wonderful. When I started doing her videos I was obese (according to the BMI measurement) and her videos combined with mindfulness meditation completely changed my relationship with my body! It's like they awoke me: it used to be this weight I was lugging around and every movement was heavy, awful..... Now I smile while exercising! She taught me to not be all "ugh this is so hard, i'm not sure if I'll hold on to the next pose" but instead to change my perspective and breathe into the pause and even smile! Gosh I feel like this isn't coming out right, I can't find the words.... Basically my body has gone from being this thing that I had to lug around everywhere to this wonderful tool that I love feeling in motion, and that carries me everywhere (and I'm not talking about the weightloss here, though that too is happening, I'm more talking about the psychological than about the physical). Anyways: if you're interested in yoga at all: she is absolutely perfect! I'd also recommend the "do you yoga" beginner's course (it's free) which has some really nice videos :)
it may have been on day 1, just an offhand mention, the kind of thing you don't really pay attention to until, well, it keeps happening. and looking exactly the same.
Days 6 and 7: "I'm not kidding, Chris plays a lot of golf. And he's only given us this one clip of him playing golf, so we're just gonna have to use it over and over." - Green, John.
How weird must it be to work out in a group class and one guy has your face on his shirt. And what must the strangers in the class have though: not only did you have cameras recording the class, but here's these two guys and one of them has the other one's face on his shirt?
Oh my gosh! Sleep is soooo important to everything. Mental focus, mental health, physical energy, and eating habits, all seem to come back to sleep. Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep but I find that 8 hrs is my minimum to avoid anxiety attacks and not over eating. I can't tell the difference between tired and hungry sometimes. If I didn't go to bed on time or had to wake up super early I get very hungry at 4pm, regardless of when or what I've eaten that day. Do an Episode about sleep!
John, different styles of yoga are worth exploring. Personally, I find yoga classes where poses are held a long time are really good for my body. I really dislike having to switch to a new pose before feeling I've arrived in the current one. Also, I know meditation is hard for you, but I find slow, gentle yoga classes to be a form of meditation I don't mind nearly so much. Thanks for your honesty and thoughtfulness in these videos.
I love that you're doing so many different things. It keeps up the spirit of "It doesn't matter which activity, as long as you consistently exercise". I also love that you're motivation yourself with embarrassing pictures, although I seem to have missed some of Chris' pictures.
I LOVE Hatha yoga. Super-relaxing, better than a massage, great for the mind and body. And yes, poses can be modified to suit different bodies/abilities.
I've been doing about 20 minutes of yoga about 5 days a week in the mornings for about 2 months with the help of a phone app, and I am far more flexible, a little bit stronger, and my balance has improved. While I don't have anyone "coaching" me, I do think I am doing a good job.
Pilates might be closer to John' "oh kill me now" point, however, if the more energetic yoga was also not for him. For his goals, I think the stretchy holding-poses yoga would be most likely to recur.
I love yoga. For me, a really good yoga class emphasizes respecting and listening to your body. I like to think of it as a physical expression of the mental self-forgiveness that I sometimes struggle with: I recognize my physical boundary in a pose, push against it just enough to progress, and then relax and congratulate myself on working toward improvement.
I love how you do your exercises in the intimat space that is TH-cam. At this point of time I'm 50days behind but i will try to catch up, I dearly hope that I don't have to watch you for 6 years in order to gather the courage.
Yoga is one of my favorites! It always makes me feel better mentally and physically and if I go through a period of not doing it regularly I can definitely tell a difference.
when I was in the hospital a few years ago, we had a daily yoga class which was usually just 1-6 people, and it was AMAZING. super personalized, super laid back, super cozy and non judgemental, also "free" (being in the hospital was amazingly expensive, but lets not talk about that). after I got out I tried yoga classes every so often, but they were never as good as hospital yoga, and the conclusion Ive come to is I only like yoga when the classes are small enough the teacher can give everyone individual attention. I sort of winder if your (john's) experience with yoga isnt the same, since you loved your 2:2 yoga class more than any previous yoga classes.
Ah I love yoga! In the past it has been my absolute favorite way to work out. I don't do yoga enough anymore though as school has gotten me doing a lot of other things. I really need to get back into it because I love it. Also John, I actually use meditation to fall asleep. I do it right before and most apps have sleep specific ones and I go right to bed! Wish I had this kind of tech when I was younger! Could have saved me a lot of sleepless nights.
Yoga is the best stretching. I went to Soccer camp when I was in high school and there would always be a yoga session midweek which made all my incredible soreness go away.
I thrive on team work outs and I honestly don't get how you can have an intense workout without music to distract from the pain? I am impressed! I also love hatha yoga and it was fun to recognize the poses you did :) (I have just celebrated my 1 year gym anniversary so I am still a newbie in many ways, but getting much better )
Try your meditation in a more upright position and probably a stiffer chair, or backless if you can. It will help keep you from falling asleep and give you better focus. You can usually get a better feel for your breath too. A dining table chair is nice or a folding chair. After a while you can transition to an ottoman or foot stool if your back and abs can support it. These options all keep you from having to sit on the floor cross-legged, this is still too painful over time for me, but still upright. You should be comfortable and relax but probably not that relaxed.
I just watched the entire playlist. here's some advice; it's not a major thing, but it might help, especially with endurance: remove the sleeves from your workout shirts. it increases your range of motion a lot and enhances airflow around your often overheated torso.
John, a thought regarding your late night snacking. Perhaps meal plan your snacks in advance for the week. For example, rather than carb (wheat or corn or potato) based muchines, try seasoned kale chips or toasted chick peas or seeds. Also, a satisfying healthier snack could be having a glass container in the fridge with raw carrots, celery and other John friendly vegetables and some homemade bean dip or hummus or a nice miso based dip. The flavours can be strong and satisfying without the binge munching on junk food. Well done on the 48 days!!!
I LOVE hatha yoga. When the yoga craze hit it was like 'who can make the most intense class?' But that eliminates a lot of people being able or willing to participate. Yoga is versatile. Some people use it to get their flexibility, cardio and strength. But i find it more enjoyable to use it to for flexibility and relaxation and get my cardio and strength elsewhere. Anyway, you don't have to have crazy routines to get the benefits. :D
Re: late night snacking, could it be that you're not eating enough during the day? that's always what it is for me. Then I feel guilty, say I'm going to eat "perfectly" (which often meant eating sparingly) and then the cycle continues. Based on the pics, you're not eating a ton of calories so maybe try increasing portion size of the healthy foods you enjoy or add good quality snacks throughout the day. This is super fun to watch!
addresing the snack problem: i mentioned it before but imma do it again, stop buying snacks even for the kids, if you do buy then buy healthier ones, explain to your kids why it's important and tell them to hold you accountable because they WILL. sometimes a healthy lifestyle is a family effort
Play run-around ping-pong*!!! It's my family's favorite and the right balance of challenging and fun so you don't notice you're sweating buckets and breathing heavily by the end. *Run-Around Ping-Pong: Best played with 3-6 people. Everyone has a paddle. There is one ball. One person serves and another hits it back. You rotate around the table one position every time the ball is hit. It moves fast enough everyone is pretty much sprinting around the table diving for the ball and such. You can play with just keeping the ball going the longest as your objective or if you prefer to be more competitive, you can keep score with everyone playing for their own points (normal ping-pong scoring minus teams). Have fun!
OMG "like an egret wading through a vast marsh" ... I'm dying. This is the best.(I really, really enjoy 100 days and it is the thing that I most look forward to watching on youtube right now! Great work. Like others have said, I'd really be interested in you exploring other forms of meditation such as walking meditations, and other relaxation activities such as drawing meditation and writing/journaling, as well as exploring other ways of reducing stress and integrating these habits into your daily life. There is more than one way to meditate and not all ways are best for all people. But I think you might be done shooting the series by now? Anyways, I am really looking forward to watching the second half!)
Does anyone know of other series like this? Where people start on a health project and film it the whole time? I really enjoy this, so I'd love to watch more like it!
The YMCA has super relaxing yoga classes. If you can stand to continue doing it regularly, your flexibility will improve really quickly. That being said, you really did do the poses very well :)
I'm both excited and sad that this is almost half way done. Excited because john this is amazing you're killing it this is incredible!! And sad because I'm enjoying this so much and it's inspiring me to get in shape. Also I would love to know the name of Chris's favorite Bruno mars song.
I personally prefer yoga to meditation. Moving my body and being mindful of my breath helps me to let go of thoughts more than just sitting and breathing does.
I hope that after the 100 days they show their sustaining efforts. Ah yoga! I still struggle with it after several years, but it does make me feel better. John, at 39 I'm pretty sure a 6 pack is still in reach. However, the usual saying is that "abs" are made in the kitchen." We all have abdominal muscles, but they're hidden under the extra fat. Memento mori
Don't know whether anyone reads these, but John, your flexibility could really improve if you did some nice stretches or yoga *after* your workouts. Or at least like a 15-30 minute warmup. With muscles all warmed up, blood pumping and so on. Cold stretches are torture with an inflexible body, I know from experience... Of course, that's if you want to work on your flexibility a bit. I just like how it makes my body feel much better when I've been doing at least some stretching every day.
John, Yeah, I'm not a fan of the "aerobic" yoga either. I /like/ the slow, calm, stretching yoga like is in this video, or that WiiFit tries to get you to do.
This is so interesting. I've always been super flexible, just naturally, and I cannot get into yoga. It doesn't make me feel relaxed or like I had a good workout. I think exercising for me needs to exhaust me mentally and physically and also contain lots of different exercises so I don't get bored.
Amy G have you tried hot yoga (aka bikram yoga)? If you're already pretty flexible and fit, you might love it. I know it's a real killer and it will exhaust you both physically and mentally :)
If you've found a form of exercise you love then stick with it! :D Sports should be enjoyable instead of another chore to add on your list. And there is no one sport that everyone love (nor should there be one);)
I really feel like continued soft and easy modified yoga like you did today John, will definitely have some long term benefits for your flexibility. You might also try a tai chi beginners class, I think you'd really enjoy the added muscle, tendon and joint flexibility in the long run.
Much less dry heaving than normal, progress is possible! Good job John.

I hate to say it but I love the humiliation pics when you guys don't photograph your food. I don't want to say that I'm supporting you desire to snack and not picture it...but I am.
The humiliation pics are pretty funny XD
Im going to be extremely sad when this series is over lol
Dave Crihfield I hope that they do a sequel!
At a minimum, occasional check ins to talk about the challenges of maintaining their progress would be interesting.
Another 100 days?

Typos because autocorrect/mobile. Sorry folks, I think it still makes sense.
Katherine Baer losing fat increases core stability not the opposite

It has taken me way too long to realize that every time they mention Chris golfing, they are using the same shot
Skip6235 I dont know what to say :-P
Skip6235 hahahaha I'm pretty sure John actually says at some point "Chris only gave us this one clip of him golfing".
Movie magic!
it may have been on day 1, just an offhand mention, the kind of thing you don't really pay attention to until, well, it keeps happening. and looking exactly the same.

"Is that a boat pose or an actual boat!" :')
MrEpiknation "happy to be a little boat, full of water, still floating"
~John, in Thoughts from Amsterdam
FUCKING MAJESTIC
I knew it was coming but I still giggled (out loud, on the bus) when the golf-clip came on.
for a great intro to yoga class on TH-cam that is more about exploring your body and less about aerobics, try Yoga with Adrienne. It's amazing.
Agreed. We're big fans.
Yoga is the one thing that got me back into a more fitness-oriented lifestyle. Meditation and exercise all in one
DoYogaWithMe.com is also a good source of yin yoga classes.
How weird must it be to work out in a group class and one guy has your face on his shirt. And what must the strangers in the class have though: not only did you have cameras recording the class, but here's these two guys and one of them has the other one's face on his shirt?
If I'm going to do yoga, I also prefer the slower paced kind that focuses on holding poses. It's much more relaxing.
started working out yesterday. Ran a mile to and from work yesterday. 14:00 and 13:30.
Raymond Smith great work!
Great work, dude!
Monica Dollive thanks
get chris to do a voiceover for once :D
Amane Abunada that'd be awesome!
I love this videos! Please don't stop uploading after 100 days.
Does anyone else hear "heinie" when John says "high knee" and giggle relentlessly, or am I the only 28-going-on-5 year old here?
Andrea Frederick
Are you watching their high knees?
Pervert.
42 goin on 5 here!

Zac Efren lol. I feel ya about exercise being more comfortable with less people around

ShaunaMaree I'd love to see them work out with Cassey Ho 😂
Yay Tree House and yay Laura and Candy! My favorites in Indianapolis. Thanks for showing them John!

Does anyone know what'll happen after day 100? To the channel? Like it just dies then? Or new people doing the challenge?
Maybe it will just be regular updates on their various health/workouts?
It would be cool if they could have another pair go through 100 days.
I love this idea too!!
Annika Clark I nominate hank!
Amy G I second this nomination!
Yoga is one of my favorites! It always makes me feel better mentally and physically and if I go through a period of not doing it regularly I can definitely tell a difference.
I have found 100 days to be super inspiring. We are with you, guys! Even when you're dry heaving, we love you!

sleep is the third leg of the stool! Nutrition, exercise, and REST!
Chris' Rhett & Link shirt never fails to make me happy.
I very much enjoy these 100 days, in direct contrast to the other "100 days" that we are all suffering through right now...
Ah I love yoga! In the past it has been my absolute favorite way to work out. I don't do yoga enough anymore though as school has gotten me doing a lot of other things. John's day 44 picture😂😂
yeah my favourite
Lol my favourite too
Yoga is the best stretching. I went to Soccer camp when I was in high school and there would always be a yoga session midweek which made all my incredible soreness go away.
YES! YOGA DAY! I've been waiting for this one. Nailed it, guys!
I am Loving this series. Thanks for taking us along with you!
Find these deeply inspiring. Making my own changes as a result. Thanks John and Chris!
Are you planning on doing a sleep study at all during the 100 days?
Try your meditation in a more upright position and probably a stiffer chair, or backless if you can. It will help keep you from falling asleep and give you better focus. You can usually get a better feel for your breath too. A dining table chair is nice or a folding chair. After a while you can transition to an ottoman or foot stool if your back and abs can support it. These options all keep you from having to sit on the floor cross-legged, this is still too painful over time for me, but still upright. You should be comfortable and relax but probably not that relaxed.
I just watched the entire playlist. here's some advice; it's not a major thing, but it might help, especially with endurance: remove the sleeves from your workout shirts. it increases your range of motion a lot and enhances airflow around your often overheated torso.
keep up the hard work. if it means anything, you are an inspiration. thank you
John, a thought regarding your late night snacking.
John, the heroic dolphin made me spit out water from laughing!
I am enjoying this series so much!
I had just finished my yoga practice for the day when I saw this in my sub box! That yoga class looked beautiful!
Keep up the good work guys, you are doing great!

I actually use the Headspace meditation to help myself sleep sometimes so, yeah, I'm not surprised about that!
you can really see the progress john made
addresing the snack problem: i mentioned it before but imma do it again, stop buying snacks even for the kids, if you do buy then buy healthier ones, explain to your kids why it's important and tell them to hold you accountable because they WILL. sometimes a healthy lifestyle is a family effort
Excuse me? A move that no one remembers? A Few Good Men is one of my favorites! YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!
That's the yoga I do!!! It's so exciting to see when you guys do things that I now do as motivated by this series.
Thumbs up for the Election Profit Makers tee. Keep riding those waves.
Does anyone know of other series like this? Where people start on a health project and film it the whole time? I really enjoy this, so I'd love to watch more like it!
This answers my yoga question from the last video!
Did any of the other Sculpt class participants notice that the face on Chris' shirt is John's?
The sleepy thing might also be your position. I like to sit with my spine straight up actively so I don't accidentally fall asleep when meditating.
I love this series! I wish it would never end
The YMCA has super relaxing yoga classes. If you can stand to continue doing it regularly, your flexibility will improve really quickly. That being said, you really did do the poses very well :)
Yay for female camera crew!
I love Chris's A Few Good Men references
I'm both excited and sad that this is almost half way done. Excited because john this is amazing you're killing it this is incredible!! And sad because I'm enjoying this so much and it's inspiring me to get in shape. Also I would love to know the name of Chris's favorite Bruno mars song.
Yoga is so bomb. Really happy you enjoyed it :)
omg I wanna do yoga now. I'm just gonna go book a class now.....
OMG THAT SMUSHY THING IS SO TRUE
I just rewatched 'A few good man' two weeks ago, so I remember. :)
I personally prefer yoga to meditation. Moving my body and being mindful of my breath helps me to let go of thoughts more than just sitting and breathing does.
Sometimes, I am extremely motivated by this series. And sometimes, I just feel so ashamed by my complete lack of healthy lifestyle habits.
Can we have a t-shirt that says "FUCKING MAJESTIC" on it?
That movie is actually 24 years old. Oh, John.
When you give measurements in the show please could you give them in standard international metric units as well as imperial units
100days is like the internet's version of old workout videos from the 90s
Well Jhon, falling asleep while meditating at least means you're relaxing while doing it
Sounds like you are using Headspace for meditation.... i really like the 10% happier app. Same sort of idea - just presented a bit differently.
John is really into that Brazilian Soccer Team T Shirt for meditation (or is just the same footage over and over again).
I don't do traditional yoga at all- I do DDP Yoga, aka Diamond Dallas Page giving Yoga poses a wrestling twist. So goooood.
This motivated me to exercise
I hope that after the 100 days they show their sustaining efforts.
Ah yoga! I still struggle with it after several years, but it does make me feel better.
John, at 39 I'm pretty sure a 6 pack is still in reach. However, the usual saying is that "abs" are made in the kitchen." We all have abdominal muscles, but they're hidden under the extra fat.
Memento mori
What meditation sessions are you following?
Your videos are so short! I'd love it if you'd show more of the workouts. The video could be about 15 minutes and it would be perfect.
You guys are looking great
The only thing between you and your six pack is the remnants of a very small keg 🙂
I’m re-watching this & I swear I don’t remember the commentary the first time I watched it. Is this my Mendela effect moment?
Can we get a season 2? Pretty please? With frozen yogurt and a cherry on top?
Sleep is a vital part of health! Dear everyone, try to get some good sleep. It's very important for your brain and body. Much love, Winston
did any of the other people at the group workout notice that chris was wearing a shirt with the face of another person at the group workout [john]?
I feel like this must be asked. Does John even have weekends? Ya know, in the formal sense, not just the naming of days of the week sense.
Noannelle Sky ah i really have no interest in that. i also get heat stroke pretty easily so i stick with weightlifting haha.
You might also try a tai chi beginners class, I think you'd really enjoy the added muscle, tendon and joint flexibility in the long run.
so glad you included the measurement of John's flexibility, I always find my hamstrings improve so much after yoga!
"I Am Not a Flexible Person" - I relate to this mentally and physically
I mean that in terms of my hamstrings 😂
A Few Good Men is one of my all time favourite movies. What do you mean, no one remembers it???
