I'm battling depression and I started doing the 3-2-1 thing. I also struggle with thinking of three things I did well because the voice in my head is like "yeah well you were supposed to do that anyway so that doesn't count as an accomplishment". I still think it's a really good exercise because it forces me to recognise every little victory and prioritise a main goal for the next day.
Yo John, did you guys have someone look at your running forms? It could shave off a lot of minutes and make it much more enjoyable if you don't have joint pains and whatnot from a bad form. Cheers!
For the last year, I've set myself a daily Asana task of thinking about something that I'm happy about each day. Sometimes it's as mundane as, I ate two pieces of fruit today! others it's I had a really good conversation with someone, or I made someone else's day better. It's the little things, and this has helped me be happier and more grateful for the blessings in my life.
As some one who send the first 27 years of her life in the sunny part of Arizona (Tucson) but now lives in the very cold and wind part of Arizona, I too am jealous of Chris Arizona trip.
It's hard to celebrate your successes...what about a particularly good day of parenting? I tend to beat myself up more in terms of my kids: "I didn't spend enough time with my 2 year old, I wasn't listening well with my 6 year old" etc but other days I need to remember that I laid in bed with my 6 year old for an extra 20 minutes talking about animals. And that's not something huge to anyone but him, but that makes it a success for me and something I like to think if I say, "yes, that was a good thing I did today" that I will do it again.
John, it can be anything, even the smallest things! you helped you kids open a jar, answered questions on Twitter, you complimented your wife, anything positive :) cheering you on!
An example of a third thing you could be proud of at the end of the day: Connecting with your wife or child. Relationships are the most thing in my life, and doing those things well is something to be hugely proud of.

Aside from 3-2-1, I really like to do rose, bud, thorn. A rose is one good thing that happened during the day, a thorn is one less than good thing, and a bud is something you are excited about. At my camp we did this to wind down. We would also do a personal question, like "If you could change one law or amend the constitution in any way what would you change and why?"
Suggestions for things you were good at: Made someone laugh, didn't quit while working out, ate the way you planned, did chores at home, felt good about being you (I use this as my go-to. It really helps my mental health if I look for these moments every day).
For a while my mother instituted a policy of saying "Two Good Things" about the day at dinnertime, and I found it really unpleasant. I think it's probably a great mental change to try to make, but at least at that time I found that on days where I didn't really do much, it was hard to find anything to list, and so a day where nothing really happened was twisted in my mind into a day where nothing good happened -- which was like the opposite of the goal. I'm loving reading the comments here with suggestions, though, and the reminder that it really can be little things. Learning to celebrate the little things is a big thing.
I really appreciate the way you guys have been incorporating mental health into your 100 Days! It's an interesting angle that I think gets ignored a lot when people are focused on exercise/physical health, even though there's a definite tie-in.
Sarah is awesome! "This is all I got, man!" Definite goals. Also, Chris has got to keep his feet in line with his target when he tees off, unless he wanted his ball to go right.
John, I've done the "three things to be grateful for/pleased with" etc etc before, and similarly found it tough! A think that helped me a lot is when I started thinking really, really small... like, I would get stumped on what I had actually enjoyed or been pleased with until I started to think on a microlevel and then was like "well, you know, I *did* really feel good when I listened to that song walking home after work, and I also really felt pleased with that cup of coffee I had in the morning, that was really nice, and I am happy that I was able to watch that TV show with my spouse, that was lovely." Starting really small was a good way to get in the groove, and then it got easier from there
I've been trying to implement a routine of my family members each thinking of 3 good things every day because we can tend to have a rather negative outlook and tbh destructive self talk. It's been tough so we try and encourage each other to find something small that was good that day even if it was "I had a very nice lunch", "I really like the top that I wore today" or "I got to work on time" etc. I've always been a fan of noticing the small beauties in life so that works well for me, maybe that would help you find your third thing John?
Maybe it would help to try find your third "thing I'm pleased with" in the relationships you have with members of your family? A fun activity with the kids, a kind gesture for Sarah, something like that, a "relationship success" that you can be pleased with?
I love card workouts! Making exercise more like a game makes it definitely more enjoyable. Also, I had my weekly health assessment and found out I've lost 12 pounds since the beginning of the year!! Huzzah!!!

What sort of exercise does Sarah usually do? She's in excellent shape (it puts me to shame and I don't have the job + 2 kids + 1 dog excuse - I'm just lazy). I will say that I introduced the 3-2-1 thing with my husband and myself. With depression and chronic pain it's often hard to find things I think I did well, which is why having my husband do it with me has helped. When I can't think of 3 things, he helps by telling me things he thinks I should consider. The key for us was Rosianna had said they could be little things. When you have anxiety and depression and such things like I do (and many people do), sometimes even getting out of bed is a victory to be included. Just something to consider.
Yeah, that whole "I've figured out how to cheat at push ups"? Nope, lol...you really are just getting better at push ups. You're stronger now so they're way easier. Congrats!
I currently live in Illinois but I grew up in Arizona and the biggest mystery of this to me is how Chris or anyone else can golf in this weather. It's hard enough to convince myself to go running, let alone do something that doesn't significantly increase my heart rate outdoors.
This series is really great, thanks so much for producing it. I really enjoy watching people's process, seeing introspective journals documenting improvement and I think this is a really inspiring, positive, and realistic look at what it takes to live healthier. I do find it interesting how there's a fairly consistent narrative of steady improvement with exercise, disappointment in yourselves/each other in regards to diet and meal tracking and apathy towards/complete rejection of meditation. It seems to me like the project was set up in a way that this is a predictable result. I imagine because exercise makes for good video (action, competition, visible struggle, etc.) it was given priority in the budget. Even in a video like this where you see "little" of your trainer, you have two full workouts planned, prepared and executed by her with in-person advice/coaching as well as a workout partner that can help and push you. It's a no-brainer that your exercise routine is successful with that amount of support, even when you aren't doing a workout planned by someone else you have the education and habits developed by all of the workouts and special activities from the first half of the video series. By comparison, (at least that made it through the editing process) you've only sat down to talk with a dietician twice. If you had the same amount of support for your meal/snack planning/preparation I think it wouldn't be nearly so hard for you to maintain your intended diet guidelines. Imagine if every few days you were to meet with your dietician instead of your work out instructor, and instead of working out for an hour you and a partner were to pre-prep meals and snacks for the upcoming few days, and along with forcing yourself to do a half hour of exercise every day you forced yourself to do a half hour of cooking with intention. On a similar note, it's interesting to see that instead of enlisting a meditation coach you have chosen an app. Apps are great and work for some people (Craig Benzine, for example, has used exercise apps fairly successfully) but I doubt you would argue strongly that an app is an equal substitute for coaching from an expert in any field. What would the difference be if you had prioritized meditation over exercise? I'm certain the meditation instructor would have suggested walking meditation (Chris could practice mindfulness on some if not all of his many rounds of golf) and other mindfulness practices that don't necessarily require sitting (eating, washing dishes, etc). Do you think that your priorities (exercise, diet, mental health) are reflected by the average american? Do you have any thoughts on how that's affected by the culture you were raised in/are a part of? Do you plan on making a note of how your priorities aligned with your successes?
Thanks for posting your journey. I have been using this as a way to motivate myself back to fitness after I tore a tendon in my arm and now I can't wait to hit the gym and go back to roller derby! It gave me a few ideas on how to eat better too. Keep killing it!
John, if I may make a suggestion for your 3 successes each day... you stated one was exercising, a second was getting work done... perhaps the third should be connecting with your loved ones... being present and showing your family you love them even if in only some small way each day
Before you give up entirely on meditation, John, I highly recommend you try out The Mindful Geek by Michael W. Taft. It's a wonderful meditation guide in book form. It's very thorough and precise, and the meditation techniques presented are far more appealing, (at least to me,) than what you've described so far. Love the series btw, far more than I thought I would.
Even though there are four days left in this shortened month, I have some updates: I have lost another 9 pound, bringing my total weight down to 277. This is a total loss for 2017 of 26 lbs., from 303 to 277. Still kicking bronchitis, so no gym still for the last 6 weeks, but my nutrition plan is working super well. I have clothes that I bought when I used to be 325 last year, and they are no longer fitting, especially some pairs of pants. Gonna have to buy a few clothes item at a time here in the next month.
Man, I think watching John and Chris learn to make better decisions is pressuring me subconsciously to do the same. Went to a barre cardio class and swing dancing for the first time within two weeks (the most I've exercised in the past 2 years) 0_0
Oh my god the cards!! Those were my worst nightmare in school. They were called the Cards of Death. It was punishment that usually the whole class endured on behalf of a few stupid people. I'm amazed you talked so calmly about it.
John, you have kids. If your kids are fed and asleep (or even not fed and not asleep but still alive) at the end of the day that's a success. Count it!
A real indicator that I was doing better physically was that I can pick up the little girl I nanny. She's a very tall and solid 2.5 year old, and I can pick her up and take her all over the place. This was something I just couldn't do several months ago because my pain levels were too bad. My good days are getting better, and my bad days are fewer :)
I feel you on it being hard to list successes but at least I found forcing myself to write them down (I borrowed Hannah's "to done list") helped me on the long run

I imagine because exercise makes for good video (action, competition, visible struggle, etc.) it was given priority in the budget. Even in a video like this where you see "little" of your trainer, you have two full workouts planned, prepared and executed by her with in-person advice/coaching as well as a workout partner that can help and push you. It's a no-brainer that your exercise routine is successful with that amount of support, even when you aren't doing a workout planned by someone else you have the education and habits developed by all of the workouts and special activities from the first half of the video series.
By comparison, (at least that made it through the editing process) you've only sat down to talk with a dietician twice. If you had the same amount of support for your meal/snack planning/preparation I think it wouldn't be nearly so hard for you to maintain your intended diet guidelines. Imagine if every few days you were to meet with your dietician instead of your work out instructor, and instead of working out for an hour you and a partner were to pre-prep meals and snacks for the upcoming few days, and along with forcing yourself to do a half hour of exercise every day you forced yourself to do a half hour of cooking with intention.
On a similar note, it's interesting to see that instead of enlisting a meditation coach you have chosen an app. Apps are great and work for some people (Craig Benzine, for example, has used exercise apps fairly successfully) but I doubt you would argue strongly that an app is an equal substitute for coaching from an expert in any field. What would the difference be if you had prioritized meditation over exercise? I'm certain the meditation instructor would have suggested walking meditation (Chris could practice mindfulness on some if not all of his many rounds of golf) and other mindfulness practices that don't necessarily require sitting (eating, washing dishes, etc).
Do you think that your priorities (exercise, diet, mental health) are reflected by the average american? Do you have any thoughts on how that's affected by the culture you were raised in/are a part of? Do you plan on making a note of how your priorities aligned with your successes?
Thanks for posting your journey. I have been using this as a way to motivate myself back to fitness after I tore a tendon in my arm and now I can't wait to hit the gym and go back to roller derby! It gave me a few ideas on how to eat better too. Keep killing it!

John, if I may make a suggestion for your 3 successes each day... you stated one was exercising, a second was getting work done... perhaps the third should be connecting with your loved ones... being present and showing your family you love them even if in only some small way each day

Before you give up entirely on meditation, John, I highly recommend you try out The Mindful Geek by Michael W. Taft.
It's a wonderful meditation guide in book form. It's very thorough and precise, and the meditation techniques presented are far more appealing, (at least to me,) than what you've described so far.

John and Sara are couple goals
Even though there are four days left in this shortened month, I have some updates: I have lost another 9 pound, bringing my total weight down to 277. This is a total loss for 2017 of 26 lbs., from 303 to 277. Still kicking bronchitis, so no gym still for the last 6 weeks, but my nutrition plan is working super well. I have clothes that I bought when I used to be 325 last year, and they are no longer fitting, especially some pairs of pants. Gonna have to buy a few clothes item at a time here in the next month.
Man, I think watching John and Chris learn to make better decisions is pressuring me subconsciously to do the same. Went to a barre cardio class and swing dancing for the first time within two weeks (the most I've exercised in the past 2 years) 0_0
Oh my god the cards!! Those were my worst nightmare in school. They were called the Cards of Death. It was punishment that usually the whole class endured on behalf of a few stupid people. I'm amazed you talked so calmly about it.
I'd say not quitting could be classed as a thing to celebrate :)

John, you have kids. If your kids are fed and asleep (or even not fed and not asleep but still alive) at the end of the day that's a success. Count it!
35 push ups in a minute?! wow, you might actually be able to reach 50 (that goal)!
AND you jogged 10K! 10K without stopping, that's great.
A real indicator that I was doing better physically was that I can pick up the little girl I nanny. She's a very tall and solid 2.5 year old, and I can pick her up and take her all over the place. This was something I just couldn't do several months ago because my pain levels were too bad. My good days are getting better, and my bad days are fewer :)
I saw the Yeti! For a postitve, what about time spent with your kids? Teaching my son something new is always a highlight for me.
