I've ordered the same setup, but which products do you use for the clear coat itself? When i want to clearcoat my forged carbon which composited should i buy? I only know that it has to be UV resistant. But is it a epoxy clearcoat that you use or what should i buy? Don't find any products on easycomposites for clearcoating. Just for filling pinholes :/ thanks in advance!
Wrapping metal with real carbon fiber (not carbon fibber!) is problematic. Carbon fiber does not expand or shrink with temperature changes, but the metal underneath does. In the sun, the black carbon fiber can get up to 140+ degrees F, causing the metal tank to "grow". The carbon fiber won't move, so the laminate will shear (delaminate) from the tank over time. Keep the carbon fiber skinned tank at the same temperature, no problem. Expect then different galvanic potentials between the metal and carbon fiber will cause oxidation (unless you keep the carbon fiber skinned tank in a completely dry environment).
Can the clear coat hide all the scratch marks from the 240grit sand paper? I always thought 400 grit is minimum. Sometime scratch marks still can be seen under the clear coat even thought I tried 400. Anyway to over come this issue? Tky
Hi! Did you just sand with 240grit and call it a day? I would have figured there would be stages into the finer grit, but if that's all you need that's fine with me. Looking to clear coat (to protect from the sun) my Celica Spoiler. I'm hoping 2K rattle cans will be good enough coping all the steps you took.
240 grit allows for mechanical adhesion. The quality of his finish is mostly achieved through the thorough degreasing and spray booth indoors. Rattle cans should get you most of the way there, then you can polish out any impurities. 7 months later, so how did you do?
@@mod.ts76 I was an idiot and didn't realize I already bought one that came sanded and coated lol. Not exactly a job I could get done perfectly though.
found a set of carbon fiber fenders for my mustang the guy already sanded the clear down that was on it will I have an issue spraying automotive clear on them or will it fish eye.
2K polyurethane clear coats are actually clear rubber, and have good scratch resistance and impact strength. Scratches can often be buffed out, just like the sanding scratches.
I just bought a 2022 gsxr. I am slowly putting gloss carbon fiber all over it but it has a ton of stock carbon fiber that’s isn’t gloss coated. I never would have thought to sand it. Could you let me know what you think? Should I do this even thought it’s matte finish currently, so that I can gloss them?
@@CarbonWorkshops turns out it is scored plastic and I can’t let that slide. I can carbon fiber skin it and clear coat it. Can’t let the scored plastic remain lol
Do you think a similar result could be achieved with a spray can of 2k clear coat? I'd like to try this but I can't justify buying a whole compressor and spray gun for this. I've tried with 1k clear but the finish ends up too soft and scratches easily.
@@CarbonWorkshopsI can’t get a nice shiny polish from my cf trunk I haven’t sanded with a fine grit tho should I 3k grit sand it and polish polish polish? And use a cut compound before polishing? It’s really dull it looks like dry cf almost
240 grit is likely the correct, or close grit to sand prior to clear coat. Like most coatings, clear coat needs a specific "tooth" size to bond too. Too course, like 60 grit, and you'll see the sanding scratches through the clear. To fine (like 1500 grit), and the sanding scratches are too small to fill and hold onto, and the clear coat will likely delaminate over time. All professional paint re-finishing systems specify the correct grit of sanding (both wet and dry) to use, prior to applying the coating.

I’m just redoing my roof wrap it’s been down for 2 years now and just started cracking
So new stuff with spaying
Wow 😱 that turned out awesome. 👌
Thank you 🤟
@@CarbonWorkshops hey guys how could I place a custom order for a Ford Fiesta mk7.5 centre console ?? Cheers Cobble Detailing
Absolutely love this video.
Celsius or farenhei ???
Is this full carbon fiber? What about carbon fiber look one surely can't sand them am I right?
How much clear coat and how much thinner did you mix ?
Mate, how you create this spraying blocks?

Even better is to make sure the 2k clear you use has UV protection.... Will last even longer
Most automotive clears have UV protection...
What grit should I use to prep a piece for clear?
Is that a real carbon fibre part on you wrapped it up
Can I do bike tank wrap & then put clear coat /lacquer on top of it to make it last longer without damaging.?

Hi, with this clear coat I have no issues. It's very thick compared to others iv used.

Nice job, what's the size of Your workshop? I would also like to start a hobby with carbon, but I have not much space...
Not big enough 😂 about 10 x 16ft

Youl be fine, just make sure it's well de greased 👌
When it doubt, spray the clear coat a bit thick, versus too little. You can always come back and cut and polish the heavy orange peel texture.
what about impact, scratches resistance ?
nicely made
Time will tell I guess, however it is automotive grade 2k clear coat used on cars.
2K polyurethane clear coats are actually clear rubber, and have good scratch resistance and impact strength. Scratches can often be buffed out, just like the sanding scratches.
What kind of clear coat did you use?
I use Lechler 2000 macrofan 2k
What type of carbon fibre weave is it, and is it skinned or full carbon part?
Its twill weave made from prepreg carbon fibre. And this is a full carbon part.
Instead of clear coat could you have brushed on then polished the clear gel coat you use in other videos?
Xcr resin could be brushed on. It would require wet Sanding flat through all grits up to 2500 grit before polish.

I can't see that being a problem. Sand a little, degrease and re clear coat 👍

Yes the 2k mix cans you should be able to. Maybe not great straight from the can but should wet flat and polish great.
2k spray cans work very well for small parts

Do you have to use an etch primer before clear coating?
No, just sand the surface and de grease
nice job mate
Nice work
Hey man how’s it going how do I request a custom job for a Ford Fiesta mk7.5 ? Interior centre counsel
Hi, unfortunately to busy for custom work at the moment.
Thanks tho

Wow i need this .
Can u use smoke clear coat?
Sure, just add the candy to the 2nd coat of clear coat.
is not the 240 sand paper to high? so no finish with 1500 or so before aplying clear coat?

What if i use 2k clear coat spray? What grit do i use for it
@@JR-nh4fi I'd try 400 wet sanded.
@@drrock5356 400 and thats it? Thanks for answering fam
hey dude...why is my product become like acne when it get exposed on hot weather?
It could be because your clear coat was not cured to a high temperature before being exposed to the sun.
What grit is red scotch? Can I do 400 then 1500 then spray?
Red scotch is 320. 400 then spray will be fine. I wouldn't go to 1500 you will have trouble with the clear coat sticking.
@@CarbonWorkshops thanks bro.
is the red scotch the fine or the coarse version?
and what surface cleaner do you use? is there a certain type that works best?
The red scotch is a the equivalent to 320 grit sandpaper. And surface cleaner I use is 'Gyeon Q2m prep' works very well.

What size compressor?
100L
Is this a carbon sticker?
No, real carbon fibre

Yes but the pinholes will appear again once dried.
