There’s some really bad tips here tbh. From what he used, the method and even his buffing was TERRIBLE. What he used won’t make it past a year with out fading and doesn’t even look clear. 2k clear would be better, slowing his hand down would’ve made it glossier and maybe not even need to be wet sanded. If you chose to wetsand, do not add wax or fillers for month Is recommend by most body shops
this worked soo good , i actually didnt even try at all and it still came out looking great it used to be really faded only thing i recommend is put the spray can outside in the heat or in warm water then shake them good or else you get dry spots , thanks again for this vid!!
Thank you for the tips in this video. I found it a few weeks ago and have finally got around to putting a clear lacquer on my carbon motorcycle silencers. I've not used a spray can for a long time and happy with how they're coming along 👍
Joni is right. 6 dollar can of clear will last you maybe a month lol. Spraymax 2k ($23) is a 2 part clear where you need to activate it with a button underneath the can. Its professional grade and works great for small parts such as fenders and spoilers.
Actually I painted some areas of a GMC Yukon with Maxx 2k clear and some places have Dupicolor clear. The 2k was toast after a year and the Dupicolor lasted closer too 2yrs.
Dude this video is clutch! I have the anvil spoiler myself and did not think I would be able to find a video on repairing the carbon fiber…life saver my guy 🤌🏼
I don't know if you were using a way lower % of alcohol when you wiped it down before hitting it with the 3000 grit sandpaper, but when I tried to sand and re-coat (after letting it dry for 48 hours), it got all sticky as if it wasn't fully dry yet -- using the same type of clear coat as you. When I went to the hardware store to look for different types of clearcoat (like a faster drying one) I explained to one of the workers there what I was doing and he said I shouldn't be using alcohol to remove sanding dust -- I should be using a tack cloth. Other than that, it seems to be coming along okay.
Okay so I got a used hood real cheap carbon fiber. It is busted cracked everywhere and the clear coat is peeling. Like fibers are actually showing in some of the busted areas. What do I repair the busted areas with? I don't know if I can repair the carbon fiber or just repair the hood and paint it or wrap it. HELP
Hi I have an electric skateboard that has a carbon fiber deck that I gauged trying to scrape off some very silicone stuff the prior owner sprayed on the board. It seems like I gauged the glossy part not the fibers which appear to be deeper, will this method work for filling in these gaps or gauges?
@@datura_boof oooh okay. also after doing a little google search i found that it looks like they are glued on and you use a heat gun and fishing line like you said.
@@datura_boof yea i feel that man, i have an old bugeye wrx with a seibon carbon fiber hood that is sooo faded. so imma pull out the hood and do this method, ill tell u my results when i do it
Mines is in terrible shape. I don't know what to do next. You have an email I can show you? Or I can post a quick video on my channel. I'm about to get it wrapped
Most of these don’t last... exhaust gets super hot... most burn the clear right off...but if you catch it quick enough and it’s a sleeve that can be taken off to sand and polish then yeah you can Refinish it
when you spray move your arm from left to right, not your wrist. Moving your wrist like that will never give you an even finish. 1500 grit is not coarse enough for the clear coat to grip. I would go with something better instead of the Rustoleum can your using.
Not bad. I'm not a pro but I've seen that it's better practice to spray horizontally in a sweeping motion to cover the surface more evenly. Also I've read that 400 to 600 grit sandpaper is better to make the clear adhere better. People think you'll see the scratches but you won't.
i have used 600 and it did not go deep to remove the scratches. Used 400 and i managed to remove them. Then I used 1500 to smooth it out. after 5 layers of coat, i used 2000. looks brand new
3 yrs later maybe for anyone else who might be asking the same thing, you don’t have to. You can just sand whatever you have to but make sure to blend it a little with a higher number sand paper so that it’s not spotty
This so hard on a carbon fibre bonnet lol. I could only get 400 , 800 , 2000 and 3000 grit and same clear coat as you. But my bonnet was like rough as i wish i could upload a before photo. The only part i suck at is when doing the clear coat i get like a dry area from the can. This is the only thing i dont like about using pressure pack / rattle cans
You have to put the can in hot water for a few minutes to make sure it’s loosen up inside. Then throughly shake upside down for at least a minute before you start spraying. Then shake after every pass.
My carbon trunk is ashy and ugly. When I pour water on it, it looks nice and shiny. Should I not sand it and just clean real good and clear coat? Or do you still recommend I sand?
the clear coat is faded, the only way to get it to look nicer again is to wet sand and put more clear coat on. yes you can oxidize the existing clear coat but that wont last that long
Great explanation but execution of the steps were sub-par, I feel like you could have done better if you added more coats as you stated in the video. Overall great video 👍
when spraying clear, it is important to spray it until it is 'wet' looking but not dripping. The example given here will not give gloss.

I have seen this video like five times. Every time I restore some carbon fiber. Really good! Thanks
Clearcoat needs something to bond to, without proper scuffing it won't last. 1500 is Grit too fine. Try 600 Next Time and yield better results.
Yes 400-600 right?

Did you use normal polish wax ?
I Ended up Using Clear Epoxy 2 part RESIN to Repair my Scuffed Carbon Crankset - Bontrager Racelite . wet sanded after and Buffed Shiny
Very nice! Going to restore the carbon fiber hood on my Sentra spec v soon!
To get the sanding even I recommend a sanding block.
@Yute Hube yes you can. There are bendable sanding blocks.
Heyy, can i use 1k clear coat spray instead of 2k? If yes how many layers should i spray to sand it with a 2000 grit sand paper. Please reply :)
True! Water will act like the clear coat!
This stuff will not last !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
spray Max 2 k clear coat much better

for my hood only the middle part is fading, do I still sand out the whole hood or only the middle?
I've been debating between this and getting carbon fiber vinyl wrap.
Wheres the fun in that?

1500 grit is far to fine before a clear coat. 600grit max. The clear needs something to grab hold of to last a long time.
Update on how this held up?

Bro you should let dry the alcohol lol or how many gallons of alcohol did you used?
you don't re clearcoat after sanding. all you needed to do was to put compound then polish it
Does this work for yellowing carbon fiber?
Can you do this for sunspots as well? I'm buying a wing with a nasty sun spot and wondering if it'll come out or if I'm just damaging it more

HOW DO I REMOVE OEM APPLIED SPOILER THING FROM MY AMG? Maybe fishing line and a heatgun?
well most spoilers are drilled into the trunk, can you not find the bolts when u pop the trunk?

Will this work on carbon bike wheels

When it's really bad do you start with 600 grid or lower Or 3000, 2000, 1500 then go from or what
Start low go high higher grit is finer to smooth the surface out
i think you forgot to spray the top edge of the lip.
How about carbon fiber on exhaust/mufflers?

amazing what some will write if they are un surtan. maybe thats WHY it is called a wet sanding paper..? gosh!

Do not use 600 grit... that's WAY to rough, use 1000 and take your time..
600 is good if you have deep scratches. 1000 won't do shit

Nice work....
N then u do this 3 months later again until the end of life . Prob better to apply the real apoxsee resin .
Ray Ramos the resin is still on the surface. CF parts should always have clear coat applied to prevent the resin from fading.
This will not work!! You can't give shine from 3000 grit and wax. Is impossible!!
Fades after a week. Don’t do it guys find a better video
I had to go to 400 grit cuz rocks went deep into my carbon fiber roof
This is shitty clear coat. Use actual automotive 2K clear that is also sold as an aerosol.
To avoid this dont ever put clear coat on carbonfiber parts to begin with
Looks like shit. Home depot rattle can clear, really? Just bring to a shop to get clear coated. If your going to do it, do it rite.
