A lot of people keep asking me "why did you leave the bag on the bus!?!??!?!???" That's a good question, and something I forgot to emphasize in the video is that during the stop for a lunch break, the bus employees told me specifically "leave the bag on the bus, we'll watch it." This is why I was so angry at the bus company and also why they're the obvious suspect. So it's not that I had a lapse of judgement, it's more that I chose to believe that employee wasn't a sociopath. I chose wrong. Hi Thomas, I’m unsure how old this vlog is but just wanted to say - I’m a retired IRISH ship’s Captain living in Australia and have traveled the world on ships but more so, backpacking around over 70 countries throughout the world spending more time doing this than the time I spent studying and University plus sea time. My first travels began in 1967- Africa, 1969 Vietnam during the war then India Nepal Pakistan before really starting serious travel. It all finished a few years ago (Europe & Russia plus old Soviet block countries. I “Always” took extra special care with my “Minimalist’ baggage, alas, on eleven occasions in that 45+years I have lost baggage, even out of good hotel bedrooms with my door locked. More recently I have had a new MacBook taken out of a backpack whilst wearing it. The very last occasion was coming from an airport hotel in Melbourne, Australia, in the hotel limousine to the airport, not a mile away, only to find in the Qantas lounge that somehow my Bose headphones and my Bose mini sound system had disappeared en route from hotel to airport. Immediately on ringing the hotel, they advised me to continue on my journey whilst they picked up my gear and would then courier to me at my home in Queensland, Australia. I know it was in a locked zipper pocket in the pack and I told them I’d watched the driver put it in ‘And’ take it out. They said that if the zipper had broken and it accidentally fell out, the driver would undoubtedly return it. You can imagine the rest, I was never to see it again. How that driver (nice elderly Australian driver who worked only for the hotel) got that out of my pack, beggars my belief. I tell you this as by 10/12 years into my travels I began to factor in theft but even that could not defeat professional in the East or West. I only came over your videos yesterday and have began to binge watch, loving your work, keep it up, excellent viewing and, most important, factor in the thieves and rogues then you won’t give a flying Fuk about em. when it occurs. "such a seasoned traveler as you would leave your bag with all your wordly possessions lying around unattended" 100% this! Losing his laptop and clothes is okay, but his passport should never be more than one feet away from him (i.e. if not in his pocket, should be in his backpack close by). Yeah, had to end the video.

@@JC-lk3me You should never leave your stuff unattended anywhere in the world. That shit can happen anywhere. The point of the video is to warn others to stay away from that bus company. The way they are all in cahoots is akin to organised crime.
I agree with what happened to this brother from the history I got from my friend who traveled from Dar es Salaam to Bukoba using this particular Bus company. At Nyakanazi, they picked an Army soldier who unfortunately has no seat to sit on. The conductor pushed him and insulted him for not being civilized. The soldier said he was still looking for a good place to hold so he wouldn't fall. Still the conductor continued to despise. This situation discouraged the soldier and he asked to leave the bus even though it was night. This Bus Company shouldn't be tolerated.
Don"t worry be happy. you have learned a new lesson, never to leave belongings unattended in a foreign country. Always keep your money and Passport with you.
Man, your video touched me so much, I could feel pretty much everything you went through. I went to Tanzania myself 8 months ago, and fortunately nothing like this happens to me, but I understand how frustrating this situation can be. Anyway, you just gained one more suscribers, I like the way you communicate in a very natural a simple way. Be safe. Life has to carry on. :)

Great experience! Not just a video, but real content here! The troubles that travelers go through and how they are resolved. It also shows some of our African systems back home, how helpless they are to solve such issues. You probably could have waited 2 months and they would still be unable to solve it.
Hey. Im watching your videos from Atlanta, GA. Im sorry for what has happened, but I’m praying for you to continue your journeys! You’ll make it through this!…
Rule 1. Keep all crucial possessions on you person, medication, travel documents, cash. Only leave unattended what you can afford to loose. Hey loving your posts 💕
Tommy, it's a rookie error leaving anything on a bus in any country. Even in North America leaving a bag on a greyhound bus, there's a chance somethings gonna go missing depending on the area.
Frankly, I am highly impressed with almost everything I see in this candid video in Tanzania. The authorities were as accommodating as you could hope for anywhere in the world, the employees in shops were attentive and respectful, and the people you came into contact with on the streets were well mannered and courteous. Overall, my impression is that the citizens have good self-esteem and that Tanzania is a "can do" country with excellent prospects for the future.
I bused and flew through Kenya, Uganda and finally Tanzania. I never, by the Grace of God had anything stolen or was sick. My friend had her backpack stolen at a bus station in Dar. Thankfully she had her small bag with passport/ cash on her. Excellent videos Tommy. Stay strong and keep them coming.
I understand this must have been harrowing for you, but thank you for the most real, engaging and honest vlog I’ve ever watched on TH-cam. You deserve all the success you have attained 🙏
Such a bummer about your bag. Your videos spread so much pleasure... that someone would do this to you is infuriating. I hope there’s some justice here.
This really sucks, i feel bad for you, important lesson to never leave your bag unattended especially in hotel rooms or in any bus. It's too bad your visit to TZ ended on such a bad note, this is very embarassing. Pole sana kaka.
Dude, the more I watch your videos and observe how you move so willy nilly, with your guard down, in foreign countries, and around the locals, the more I become afraid for you. God keep you safe.
@@beefnacos6258 totally understand, it’s good to hear the phrase, I’m not calling him out, quite the opposite. Ps. I’m English, and recognised the phrase.
" This is the real bad image , we have to do something to overcome this kind of behavior " Around the world every one is watching, the bus management should think twice ,and report this and how to stop it in the future.
Pole sana. Man that's a bummer. My backpack with laptop and IDs was stolen on a train in Switzerland. It was super quick. It only took a few seconds of inattention. One guy distracted me with some bulky luggage blocking my way and vision on my bag while an accomplice grabbed the bag and ran out of the train. It was the last few seconds before the train took off from the station. Clearly a planned scheme. I now always leave my bag with valuables between my knees except in an aircraft.
So Friends is NOT Friendly! Thanks for the heads up! Wow! Good luck! Talk about a nightmare. Being a small person, who travels alone a lot, I even use the toilet with my backpack on.
Good, live in Tanzania even when i enter a mosque i still take my pulse at the bathroom, when praying i put it infront of me, i guess he was way too comfortable
Hi Tommy! Just found your channel today. I live in the US and have never had the privilege to travel abroad other then going to Mexico when I was about 6 years old so I don’t even remember much. So I’m living vicariously through your vids and with the pandemic I don’t know when I’ll ever be able to travel. My family is from Scotland originally. That’s my first place I’d like to visit. Be safe on your travels! The corruption in some of these countries is frightening. Kinda scares me off of going but I admire your bravery and willingness to go.
There is corruption in every country. You should always be mindful of your belongings, no matter where you go. I even heard about a boy whose passport was stolen off of his waist belt in Spain once.
Wow Tommy I’ve watched a ton of your vlogs but just came across this one today. Thank you for sharing this video I’ve experienced the exact same thing on a bus in Ecuador I could guarantee the bus driver was in on it as well. I was really upset with myself for not being more cautious but it goes to show me it can happen to anyone , especially the extreme poverty they endure. It made me sick for days after losing my laptop , hard drives and cameras. I thought you kept your cool and tried to expose the ones that were involved was amazing. The way you engage all the local people and treat them with such dignity and respect it’s incredible. Thank you for picking up and keeping riding along these incredible adventures with you 👍
That sucks incredibly! I'm surprised you left passport and valuables in the bus at a bus stop though. I never leave anything valuable in the bus during any break...I separate them and keep them on my person at all times, and passport goes in a bag under my clothes that I weear. But nothing you can do about that now. Love your channel and reporting your experiences!
What an experience! Sorry about what happened. What a shame to Tanzania! I really do hope the authorities get back to you and update you on the progress. In the meantime, I am striking off Tanzania from my bucket list.
Thanks for documenting. I felt so gutted. You reacted better than me. Such a shame that ppl do this not caring about the impact! Hopefully you can look back & laugh, but it sucks to be in this situation.
Just saw this video and want so badly to go to Tanzania, and when I do ,and if I take that bus company I will show them this video, cause I always take my bag with me even to the toilet. Nice video 👍
Pole sana kaka... Have been watching your videos and enjoy them thoroughly but this video made me feel really bad and 😡 at this stupid bus company. Hope you get your replacement passport soon and do keep us posted. Asante
I cannot believe this. Your contact lenses and all valuables. As someone who wears contacts I would be crying 😢. I'm so so so sorry. I wish we who watch you could all have in person come to your rescue. This man is just trying to enjoy his African experience. This is so sad.
Tommy, you rock! Keep on keepin on. I can see that you are strong and will not let the bastards get you down. I travel my own path, and have been to many places over the years. I am from USA presently living in Vietnam. Your videos are amazing. You have 10 pound kahoonchas that enables you to go to places untraveled . You put yourself in some very thin line situations because YOU can handle it. I also admire your ability to communicate with ANYBODY with a very good sense of humble humanity. Your ability to speak and learn languages is uncanny. Nuff said , this Traveler is a Fan. I look forward to your new videos. ( You are the real deal well beyond the typical travel blog. )
Pole sana, bro. Unfortunately, there are many people in Tanzania waiting for an opportunity to profit from a rookie error. You can be sure that all the employees were in on it. One guy acting alone wouldn't have got away with it. As for the police in Tanzania, they are about as useful as a chocolate fireman and only interested in bribes. They operate on the basis that the Mzungu will be insured, so they won't bother doing anything other than the bare minimum. I always keep my stuff on me at all times and trust no Tanzanian that I don't know well. If you do that, you'll minimise the chances of having these sort of adventures and having to deal with the authorities and can concentrate on the more enjoyable side of Tanzania, like meeting local people and travelling around and so on. One bad memory and a couple of shitty people won't take away the thousands of good ones. Maybe that little kid saying hi to you was a heartwarming reminder of that. Chukulia poa. I hope the waizi get the vigilante justice that is often delivered out there.
Oh of course I don't blame Tanzania for this. It is what it is, just reporting from the ground here. If this video saves a few people from the same experience, I'd be happy
I always make sure to have my passport on me when I'm traveling, and I definitely wouldn't leave my bag with valuable stuff unattended in a bus or anything really. It sucks though that it got stolen none the less, but yeah, never leave your stuff behind when other people have easy access to it.
I'm so sorry you had to go through such an awful ordeal. Sometimes, things are learnt the hard way. Nonetheless, we move with positivity and a good potion of life lessons. Also, your video is such an eye-opener to all travelers. I don't think I'll ever forget this experience you had.

I love your videos. Finally, someone who is in the same standard and Bold, Harold and Kurt. You will be a star in no time if you keep on sending us your videos. If you ever come to Iceland then look me up. I can show you paradise.
I always feel happy to watch your videos. I still can't believe you left your passport and laptop in an unattended place with unknown people. Never ever keep your passport away even if you are flying. Some laughed at me when I said I keep my passport in my pocket, not in cabin luggage when I am flying. I replied to them, during an emergency evacuation, you are not allowed to take anything from the cabin. They laughed at me more after I said this. Well, being cautious is not one-time behavior but a culture.

I believe the early morning tiredness and the unfortunate fall forced your guard down, which led to these sad situations to happen. You can’t trust any transportation services with your belongings unattained, even in airport they ask you to keep an eye on your belongings. At first I thought you stained the Friends bus company out of anger but when I learnt that the whole hand from Friends was involved, your argument sounded more valid. It’s sad people use company to steal from people. Glad to hear you took a break from this for yourself and moved one, that’s a powerful spirit you have. ✨ Cheers!
Pole sana. I hope you get your belongings back. Please never leave your belongings in a bus when you travel. This is saddening. Whenever you travel in Africa always have a small backpack to store your valuables such as a passport, camera and laptop. You should never leave it out of your sight. Clothes and shoes should be stored separately. Pole sana. Kila la heri
Sometimes just go with your gut feeling... Or, make a decision if you feel you are totally responsible for it. But, the most important thing is to understand this👉"Every port town has it's own thieves". I feel your pain. Nways great content. Much love from🇰🇪
What a nightmare. So sorry for you that this happened. My parents were robbed the first day in Mexico. The think the hotel person and driver were in on it, pointedly asking them if they would go down for dinner soon. They still had a good trip in spite of this but it was a huge amount of stress that they did not need. Like you, they lost everything.

I'm glad my Ugandans helped you out. They don't mess around when it comes to stealing - they are firm believers of street justice/mob justice, trust me - I've seen that shit first hand numerous times. 🤣😆💪🏾
@TH-cam Assasin Mobbing on a person without a proper trial in a court is never good, it is highly despicable and shouldn't be condoned.... I am very happy that our western standard is "innocent until proven otherwise"! Mob justice is pure stone age behaviour….
@@gabbarsingh7182 yeah that’s what happened in this scenario but if this was in Uganda, they would have tracked the thief down and beat him to death. Even that other guy who said he knew the thief would have been arrested and tortured

What a nightmare. We all learn the hard way sometimes. I had my passport and camera stolen on my 2nd day, luckily in a capital city, and a got a permit and flew away the next day. I never that mistake again. Which was being drunk out with my passport and telling my friends I’ll be fine alone and momentarily falling asleep on the sea shore. You’re alive all those things you lost will be replaced. Better yet they can upgraded 😘 I’m happy to see you still on the road Tommy.
Tommy, your video is doing more to help fellow travelers than you will ever know. It seemed like the Police really cared, but what could they really do without eye witnesses testifying and only you knew what was in your bag. I can see police in the USA doing much, much less and they never would ask the accused to pay for anything, like putting you up with room and board for a week.
one thing i notice is , you still have a smile at this time way to go. i saw many asking why you leave your stuff, well shit happens sometimes, no matter how cautious you are. so you should always have guts to face it any time and be ready to all travellers.
I give you a hard time sometimes but I really enjoy watching your videos....I'm sorry about what happened with your bag brother...make sure you always take your belongings with you from now on. Stay safe and always play it smart.

As an Irish person it kills me to read about your story. I only wish that I was there to help you. God bless.
Just found your channel and my husband and I are binge watching your videos. We are so sorry this happened to you but you do such a great job keeping your chin up and documenting everything. It's also so cool that you speak so many languages. Keep it up
That was a wild ride. You did a good job documenting everything.
We miss you bro
@@JC-lk3me You should never leave your stuff unattended anywhere in the world. That shit can happen anywhere.
The point of the video is to warn others to stay away from that bus company. The way they are all in cahoots is akin to organised crime.
Kid yooooo when you going back I loved you in Tanzania
@@johnsonaak7192 Very soon
@@R2BMusicCH Yup! So sad but true!
Hell no! Please never leave belongings unattended in any place foreign or domestic. Sorry did that one time...and it did change my life course.
Never leave your stuff unattended anywhere
Well , you've just said it.
Not even in your country lol
Man, your video touched me so much, I could feel pretty much everything you went through.
I went to Tanzania myself 8 months ago, and fortunately nothing like this happens to me, but I understand how frustrating this situation can be.
Anyway, you just gained one more suscribers, I like the way you communicate in a very natural a simple way.
Be safe. Life has to carry on. :)
Oh my god. What a “ride”...... that’s painful...... you deserve more subscribers!!! Thanks for recording and sharing your journey with us. I’m so sorry that happened to you. This should not happen to anyone. Seriously start working stop stealing!!! Kudos to all hard workers! I was lucky that when I traveled by coaches nothing was stolen, in the future I’ll definitely make sure to keep all important things with me......
Great experience! Not just a video, but real content here! The troubles that travelers go through and how they are resolved. It also shows some of our African systems back home, how helpless they are to solve such issues. You probably could have waited 2 months and they would still be unable to solve it.
2 years later…
Yeah yeah my friend, we’re still investigating it. We’ll call you when we find the perp.
Even in America you don't expect Police the personally find and return your valuables. If it happens would be miracle.
Hey. Im watching your videos from Atlanta, GA. Im sorry for what has happened, but I’m praying for you to continue your journeys! You’ll make it through this!…
Atl here too 🔥🔥
It was a tough one Tommy...but you are tough too. I really felt for you. On such trips, my bag is on me all the time. Don't trust any body. Cheers bro
Very good message, am from uganda and I happened to be a victim of that FRIENDS BUS
Especially on a Greyhound 😂
Took the words out of my mouth
Frankly, I am highly impressed with almost everything I see in this candid video in Tanzania. The authorities were as accommodating as you could hope for anywhere in the world, the employees in shops were attentive and respectful, and the people you came into contact with on the streets were well mannered and courteous. Overall, my impression is that the citizens have good self-esteem and that Tanzania is a "can do" country with excellent prospects for the future.
Deep down,Tanzania is not
@@chepparmaps Oh, just like literally every country in the world? There's a lot worse places. But deep down anywhere there are bad people.

You did the right thing. You were treated nicely all the time and with respect mostly. I would have left my bag in the bus also.
What a awful journey dealing with your bag getting stolen. Thanks for taking us along! Better days ahead!
You are strong man, it would really break me if someone grabbed my hard drives and passport. Would stop filming that moment
at least it's content, so you should continue filming
I really like the host of this channel he is very humble and social.

Honestly i think that a stupid mistake youll never make again leaving your stuff on that bus! This is by far best video I've seen on your channel!
This really sucks, i feel bad for you, important lesson to never leave your bag unattended especially in hotel rooms or in any bus. It's too bad your visit to TZ ended on such a bad note, this is very embarassing. Pole sana kaka.

That should be the way
Fake Friends!! 😅
Exactly me too no matter what county I am in . You never ever live your stuff unattended nowhere
Good, live in Tanzania even when i enter a mosque i still take my pulse at the bathroom, when praying i put it infront of me, i guess he was way too comfortable
"travels alone" travel doesn't have any meaning whatsoever, stay in your country and help your own.
For those of us who always travel, we know what is this feels like..God bless you be strong...
Thank you for picking up and keeping riding along these incredible adventures with you 👍
Pole sana Tommy, now I know why u had disappeared during that time. Much love
You are so calm I would have flipped out that thieves hands would be coming off
That sucks incredibly!

I always feel happy to watch your videos. I still can't believe you left your passport and laptop in an unattended place with unknown people.
