So This Is What The Chinese Built in Tanzania? 🇨🇳🇹🇿 (#44)

  • I've spent time in both China and Africa, and their cooperation in recent decades has grabbed my interest. Recently there's been a lot of negativity written about the Chinese in Tanzania; they're there for "debt-trap diplomacy" and enforcing the will of the Chinese government. Was it true? I'm not sure if walking across the Nyerere bridge would answer that question, but it made for an interesting day while I waited for my new passport in Dar es Salaam.

Guys, my Tanzanian and (now also) Chinese friends, please read this first before repeating the same thing for the 50th time:
This video is not attacking Tanzania. It's not even attacking China. I never said that the bridge was paid for with a loan. And this video certainly isn't "American propaganda", you won't find many American nationalists defending China or Tanzania in a video. If anything, it's playing on the public's perception of every Chinese project being a trap or a scheme, when in truth the African country has it's own role and motivations in it as well.
Basically, I agree with you. So stop repeating the same comments over and over, if you do I'll delete it because it shows you didn't read this or watch the video. 下次见/baadaye

Making huge dept and making it so that if they dont pay it back in 20 years the Chinese may use it. China is taking points in the world for idk? War? U can do a lot with a harbor making military stronger,

Infrastructure is one of the fundamentals to have in a city in order for it to prosper. Without infrastructure, you have nothing. As I've said, it's up to the people of Africa to put that infrastructure into good use in order to make a profit.
Now US is trying to improve its basic infrastructure by borrowing money from future generations to fund their 1 Trillion dollar infrastructure bill. But I'm guessing that's not enough. Most of US cities are outdated and infrastructure is ageing.

The problem with the African infrastructures/constructions is not that there are too many debt, but actually, not enough being built. As a developing country want to improve and develop, they need shit tons of constructions, of course it would be better if the local or the government can do that themselves, but when you don't have the capacity/technology/funding, you are left with limited options, and to stay still waiting for donation is NOT one of them. The fact that China is being called debt-trap in Africa but China is not even the most debt holder in Africa speaks for itself. Are African countries in a debt trap? Maybe. Are they in a debt trap set by the Chinese? Absolutely not.

The Chinese offer another alternative to Africa building infrastructures to the finish at lower cost than the IMF or world Bank or other western countries. Varoufakis speaks of these Sino-African infrastructure projects as, on balance, rather beneficent efforts by the Chinese to exercise Soft Power - unlike the traditional, heavy-handed colonial military interventions by the U.S. and Europe; no threats or strings attached for the much-needed bridges, ports, etc., but rather a hope that China will receive special consideration in the event that, say, oil is discovered in Africa, etc.

It’s nice to hear you saying business is business even if it is a loan with interest. I hope Chinese people as always don’t assume that they are just helping a poor African country. So far China has proved to be a better business partner than most African countries have ever seen but the arrogance of Chinese and its treatment of African immigrants in China during the pandemic which didn’t start in Africa has been an eyesore.China’s economic plan and development is something any 3rd world without capital will like to emulate but the whatever treatment the Chinese may treat Africans will likely be reciprocated. 3:57. That’s one of the best examples of buying a shirt or worse case scenario, getting a Chinese tattoo, but not being able to understand what it means/says. A friend of mine got a Chinese tattoo and it was supposed to say “Warrior”… UNTIL we went to a Asian restaurant and the waiter lolled and said “you like to keep dental hygiene”. We asked why he said that and he proceeded to translate that the tattoo says “TOOTHPASTE” 🤣. So depending on who you are, I guess toothpaste is a warrior. Fighting off all the germs 😅

The New Silk Road aka The Belt and Road Initiative… Whilst living in Jamaica over the past several years, the Chinese have been redeveloping key infrastructure throughout the island, purchasing property and building businesses; one could say it’s modern day imperialism, thankfully though, each nation is currently benefiting.
Jamaicans are strong, as the Spanish and British Empires learned centuries ago.

Thanks for this footage. I've been in Tanzania, Dar Es Salam on business purpose some years ago. I like this country and its people. Those I met were very respectful. It's been safer than my trip to Jo-burg in South Africa some years later. There is a reason why you could not bring beer and drink on the ferry and you have to agree with these rules. In no way this will discourage tourists. We should learn to follow the law of the land and it will bring respect to Westerners. However, apart from that, we understood the point. Is that bridge a remunerable structural long-term investment or a long-term burden? Time will say.

LOL You cannot walk through Johannesburg or any other South African city like that without being robbed. If you do you're lucky.

I don't know why he complains about that, in most of the US you can't legally walk around in public drinking a beer, during my stay in Tanzania I also never saw anyone doing this...
