I was in a dark place after my husband had a health diagnosis. Someone gifted me a ukulele and this has pulled me out and made me smile. Learning slowly.

@@susanoven3175 I hope your husband is ok. I also hope that the ukulele brought some light into your life. I was sick and stuck in bed for over a year. Suddenly one day, took my wheelchair and went with a friend to a music shop. She was shocked since she tried getting me out of the house for months. I had no idea why but I was drawn to music and wanted to get an instrument. I got a ukulele, knowing nothing about it.
On the car radio back home, it was playing "Here Comes the Sun" and I was in tears because it was like I was finally starting to live my life again after being bedridden for so long. I've learned the basic chords to this song and advancing into the fingerpicking now.
Truly a beautiful instrument and a beautiful song. The pull to music is definitely healing and miraculous. ❤️

      From space.
Hers looks to be probably $500 or more, so it should sound better than any $200 or less beginner Uke.

It is all a matter of what you are used to, and where you focus your practice. I have always focused on fingerpicking the melody from around the chords. As a result, that feels natural, but I find strumming very difficult. In fact I avoid strumming because it really doesn't appeal to me.
I love this arrangement of "Here Comes the Sun". There is so much to it, that it will take time and _patience_ to master it. I do have trouble with the strumming part, and I find myself adapting the chords to my melody picking style instead of strumming. I am not saying that to show off. I am simply using that fact to illustrate that what is already in your brain and muscle memory is easy, but anything new requires working at it until it does become muscle memory wired into your brain.
A great time to practice is right before bed, because it is only while you are sleeping, that the brain grows new neural pathways to accommodate a new skill.
I began my particular style literally 65 years ago, on guitar, so it is already hardwired. I say that to underscore my comment about patience. That seems like a long time, but your entire past is a blink of an eye in the present. The present moment is the only time that really exists. So just enjoy the feel and the sound of the strings under your fingers. Do not think of it as hard, but rather as a process and an exciting adventure.
Then, with a smile, you can tell your grandkids that you are good at this because you have been doing it for 65 years.

    • @daviddiamond2415
      @daviddiamond2415 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

_@daveo2882:_ LOL😂! You could be right about brain surgery. Like a coconut, the hard part is getting through the hard shell. After that, it is just all soft and squishy. Of course, your mileage may vary, and results are neither guaranteed nor predictable 😉. _(No offense to professional lobotomists intended)._
_"Here Comes the Sun"_ on the other hand, requires nimble and dexterous fingers, precise timing, a good ear, and loving your ukulele, your music, your playing, and yourself. It requires gentle patience, persistence and enjoying the journey. Your eventual mastery is just the icing on the cake.
We are all very fortunate to have a good teacher like Cynthia Lin.
      *Thank you Cynthia.*

I'm really enjoying your tutorials. I am 68 years old and have been learning to play the ukulele for some time. It's a really fun instrument. Through your superb tutorials I have learnt to play "Don't Worry Be Happy", "Stand By Me" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Now comes the big challenge, "Here Comes The Sun". I've not done finger picking before. This is going to take some considerable time but I won't give in! Thank you Cynthia. Playing the ukulele has been invaluable to me during these Covid-19 times.

Hahaha OMG Cynthia! Way to go exploding my brain!!! I absolutely LOVE your tutorials. You are the BEST uke teacher on TH-cam my miles and miles, so God bless you for your efforts! I’ve been playing uke for 6 months now and you have been my teacher from the get-go and I am doing really well, however, I think I need to go slowly with this one or even leave it for a while longer before I attempt it. All those numbers that you’re saying are ringing in my head LOL!!! LOVE U!LOVE U! LOVE U! MWAH! Would love you to come to Perth Australia (Melbourne is 4.5hrs flight away so I couldn’t go see you there). Thanks again and best wishes. LF

I've been practicing this for month still not finished yet, but something bothering me.
    On the extra fill #1
    A--2--2------0--2----------|
    E--3------3-----------2--0-|
    C--2--------------------------|
    G--0--------------------------|
the two last notes on the E string you said --2--0 but on your video you play --3--0-
So maybe I'm mistaken but I wanted to know :)
Thanks very much for all your video, i'ts a very big inspiration and I learn a lot from you :) !!

In the print out of the cord chart, it says 3-0, sense she plays it like that, and it's on the print out. I think it's safe to assume it's to be played as 3-0.

The tab for extra fill #1 and #2 on G seems to have something wrong. You say 2 but your finger is on three. 😅

  •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Hello Cynthia, I just discovered your tutorials. Thank you so much for these, you're very pedagogue.
    I found a tiny error in this one : at 17'27" you end the extra fill#1 in G by 2 3 0 2 3 0 but you write on screen 2 3 0 2 2 0.
    I understand that 2 3 0 2 3 0 is the right one but it was a bit confusing.
Anyway, you play so perfectly and have such a nice voice that anybody would fall into your charms.
Thank you again and please... continue like this.

Thank you so much for all your amazing videos. I'm so happy to have finally mastered this one. Gonna be so much fun to take camping this weekend. Also, I would be SOOO grateful if you could pretty please post the tab for the finger picking you use while singing for the #100DaysofUkeleleSongs project. I feel it really helps with the flow of the song (start and finish slow and pretty with picking, strumming in the middle). Cheers!

I got a ukulele back in January. I found this video really early on, but it was far too advanced for me. However, I recently got into a slump. I hit my plateau. I play quite often, and I LOVE it, but I wasn't challenging myself.
I decided to focus on more challenging fingerpicking. I was playing around one day and I heard that little 2 3 0 3 melody and was reminded of this video! Although I couldn't even play the chorus at full speed back when I found the video many months ago, muscle memory has not failed me! I have now learned the whole song!
    Thank you so much, Cynthia!

You are doing the island strum? I sure wish I New where each of those words came in with the strum. Just in the beginning in the chorus. I don’t hear 4 beats, especially when you switched from C to A7 & then G. Could you one day have a real beginner lesson on that. After a year I still cannot strum with words. I have done Stand by me. It doesn’t move to other songs.

Thank you again, Cynthia for sharing your tutorials with world wide ukulele players. I tried this on my tenor with low G , first, but actually like it better on my Romero Tiny Tenor, which has a high g now. I like the brighter sound with this song & think you are also using a high g? As to the picking, I'm still working on it and know you say that whatever works is okay. I'm wavering between using my thumb and three fingers or just using my thumb, except when I need to pluck multiple strings. Haven't decided which is easier for me.

On the extra fill #1, on the G chord, the last two notes on my print out are 3 0 on the E string, which it looks like you're playing. However, your onscreen tab says 2 0, which you're saying. Which is it? And now I see it's the same in the extra fill #2. very confusing.

An alternative within the chorus picking riff, based on the G chord shape is to, instead of: C--2--4 and E-- 3 doing: C --2 and E -- 0 -- 3. 4 on the C string is E and I find it easier to hold the G chord, pluck the 2 on the C string, lift off my ring finger and pluck the open E string and put it back on 3 again.

I dont understand the 3,2,0. What are those numbers refering to? Is it 3 from our 3rd finger from left hand?

Thank-you Cynthia for this and all your tutorials. This one's a little more complicated than past tutorials and a welcomed step-up. That's a beautiful uke by the way. Is it mango?

It would help if you put what cords you are playing somewhere on the string instead of just saying them because some cords I can't just remember what it is yet, loved the tutorial though :)
