As usual I feel a bit bad about feeling so good when I'm watching such cool engines blow up. But I can't help it. I just love it! It's very spectacular and the video is great entertainment.
it's the superchargers winding down after the engine stops turning. (don't know what these window lickers are talking about with pistons and turbos or n shit)
1. Half of these "expensive racing engine fails" are just the burst plates popping off a supercharger. This is very common and designed to be a safety feature that stops catastrophic engine failure due to high pressures. It's kind of a weak link designed to fail first so that you know your pumping up the pressure too high. 2. The other bunch are carby backfires, which are spectacular, but hardly expensive fails... I'm sure after a few checks, carby clean, and rebuild, probably new jets and such, any repairs to body that popped off during the incident.... After all that i'm sure they did a few more runs that night. 3. Turbo fails are real, and expensive.... No disagreement there 4. To the people carrying on about NOS being spray with flames present. This is not a problem, NOS is only a potent fuel when under pressure. but the purging system is a cool gas that is very likely to extinguish a fire rather than aggravate one. It's not uncommon for racers to use a small blowtorch on their NOS bottles before a run to heat them up. This stops them from completely freezing over to the point where you can operate the open/close valves and such.

Damien O'Brien The plate is designed to "POP" at certain pressure levels, and only small sections actually break to vent the pressure. This means that no debris will end up being sucked into the engine as they only pop at such high pressure the pieces get thrown quite far.
Blower still turning after the engine lets go.......that sound is always there, it just gets drowned out because the engine is so loud, when the engine blows up and goes quiet, the blower is still spinning and takes a couple seconds to spool down.

Nitrous car, he was banging through the motor and either the switch or solenoids malfunctioned and let it keep spraying instead of a quick shot.

So... did all these guys blow their welds on the intake from running 100 shot of NOS?
A lot of these fails are actually burst plates popping.
Burst plates are a thin, gasket like plate in-between the supercharge, and heads that will rupture under a certain PSI. So for instance if a failure happens, and too much boost, or back pressure occurs the plate will pop, preventing internal engine damage.
Do you know much about what Damage actually happens to the engine when this plate actually goes? like shrapnel in the cylinder, damage to the charger etc...
Damien O'Brien The plate is designed to "POP" at certain pressure levels, and only small sections actually break to vent the pressure. This means that no debris will end up being sucked into the engine as they only pop at such high pressure the pieces get thrown quite far.

Streamlined Steamroller Nearly all funny cars have the gas tank in front of the engine, there is really no where else to put it on the frame.
Part of the reason (on a funny car anyway) of putting the fuel tank in the front, is that the G force pushes the fuel toward the engine
