  • Dr. Judy begins her series on Kidney Disease Awareness Week. Here she defines Kidney Disease and tells of the proper function of the kidneys. Acute Kidney Failure can be caused by toxins, trauma, shock, infection, or a UTI. Symptoms will worsen quickly with acute kidney failure and treatment will need to be given immediately. Dr. Judy shares that once the kidney has degenerated, its cells cannot be restored. In contrast, Chronic Kidney Disease may come on gradually. The kidneys can degenerate to running on only one-third of their cells before any clinical signs begin the manifest. This is the reason for monitoring lab work. (Recorded on 3/14/2022)

Thank you Doctor! Very useful. Please do a informative video on kidney failure in senior dogs with pyometra, like how to stable them before the surgery, post operative care, supplements and medication to be given, diet and etc. ❤️

Thank you so so much. I had no idea regarding too much vit. D can cause kidney problems 😮😮😮. Is it same as for humans, vit. D has to come with vit. K2?

Sweetest musical intro, will always remind me of my 2 beautiful black cats Selene and Endora....while treating them, I'd be watching Dr. Judy's videos, and even though they died, one from hypothyroidism/renal failure, and the other from squamous cell carcinoma, this wonderful show brings me some comfort....💖⚘⚘⚘✊

Is calcification in kidneys considered kidney disease? Increased over last year after being on vet prescription Royal Canine. Changed back to homemade diet. Vet has no recommendations.

Kidney disease comes in many forms. If there is damage to the kidneys from the calcification and the kidney function is compromised, that would be kidney disease. I do not recommend prescription diets. Calcification in kidneys is most likely related to oxalate stone formation so avoid any food high in oxalates.
