People praise periphery when they play something melodic like this, but fail to understand the coolness of their chaotic riffs. Saying that they sound ugly or stuff, that sound is intentional. He even describes his riffs as being chaotic at times. Music shouldn't fit into this tiny little box of what sounds good. Prog metal started as a genre bent on being experimental in every way possible, from note choice, the amount of simplicity, or not, playing in odd time signatures, odd keys. And periphery has this really nice mix of order, Beatty and chaos. I like to call it organized chaos. It's quit beautiful and refreshing once you understand it. Classical musicians did the same thing these guys are doing.

People are entitled to their opinions. Though, I'm right there with you. Never understood the kids that thought they were tough because all they listened to was the heaviest shit they could get their hands on. And in the same light never fully understood people who only listened to songs with "catchy" chorus' for them to sing along to. I've learned to respect that most people have a relatively singular music taste. It's mostly (us?) musicians who enjoy and appreciate the eclectic nature of progressive music. Most people listen to music purely for sound, while a musician also takes a moment to appreciate effort and prowess as well. It's how Rolling Stones can pump out an entire album of 12 bar blues in a matter of 6 days and their fans still love it. These fans aren't looking for musicians that work hard writing their music, they just want to hear the sound of the 12 bar blues over and over for the entire album.
