Memories of watching "Friday Night Fights" with my Dad. Aragon was a damn good fighter and a pretty funny dude. He wasn't afraid to throw punches. He even tagged the awesome Carmen Basilio with a few beauties. Too bad about the fix rumors, all the marriages and his run-ins with the law. Great segment Rich! Very entertaining.

Another home run Rich. I remember reading about Aragon in Ring Magazine and Boxing Illustrated in the early 50’s and I know he was on TV but don’t remember. He was one of the guys who fought Chuck Davey in a fight set up so Jim Norris’s boy could get a WW title shot
I went to the Olympic Auditorium in the mid 60’s when I lived in California. The ringside commentators wore construction hard hats because the fervent Hispanic fans would throw coins into the ring if they thought the decision was unfair or the fighters were not fighting to their taste. Many times I hid under my seat to avoid the carnage.

@@RichtheFightHistorian oh yes. And the fights were broadcast locally in LA.
I remember the ringside guys were Mickey Davies and often football great Tom Harmon, father of Mark Harmon. It was often chaos at the Olympic Auditorium. Years ago I talked to Jimmy Lennon Jr. He remembered his dad telling him about dodging bottles and coins and other detritus thrown into the ring. A favorite at the time was LHW Ray White, the fighting carpenter. A trial horse LHW who had a day job. The crown in SF and Oakland never got as rowdy as the LA crowd. When the verdict was announced as innocent, Aragon raced to the payphone, called his attorney. "Justice has been served!" Aragon yelled into the telephone. The attorney replied "Art don't be worried. Interesting story on "Golden Boy" Art Aragon and I didn't knew that Muhammad Ali got the inspiration from him as I only thought he got the inspiration from legendary wrestler Gorgeous George unless Ali needed someone from the boxing business, so Aragon was that guy. Anyways, interesting boxing but controversial career for Aragon. Keep it up Rich.
