Bing Crosby & Bob Hope: The Cameos

  • (My Favorite Blonde (1942) has been removed because...reasons.)
Bing Crosby's cameos in a number of Bob Hope's pictures, and a couple of joint appearances in other people's pictures.
    1. The Princess and the Pirate (1944) w/ Virginia Mayo
    2. My Favorite Brunette (1947) w/ Dorothy Lamour
    3. The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)
    4. Son of Paleface (1952) (clip from Just for You)
    5. Off Limits (1953) (clip from Welcome Stranger)
    6. Scared Stiff (1953) w/ Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis
    7. Alias Jesse James (1959)
I would have included Cancel My Reservation (1972), but...erm...unfortunately I don't have it. Or perhaps fortunately, if it lives down to its reputation.

These cameos were always a hoot to see. Cancel My Reservation from 1972 also had Bing doing a cameo in Bob's movie that was very funny.

It's always amusing when someone in a movie breaks out of the make-believe and looks directly at the camera and addresses us, in the audience. Meanwhile, as seen here, the other performers in the shot pretend that's not happening, and just keep acting.
Oliver Hardy, half of the Laurel & Hardy comedy duo, did this as well in the 1930s. He didn't speak to us, but he looked at us, when he was particularly exasperated with what Stan Laurel was doing.

Did you know that Laurel chartered the same boat trip to America as Chaplin?

Bob also got a mention in White Christmas in the song 'Gee, I Wish I Was Back in the Army' "How we would yell for Dietrich and Cornell
Jolson, Hope and Benny all for free"

The song Crosby is singing in "Welcome Stranger," (cameo in "Off Limits") is "My Heart is a Hobo."

There will never be anything similar to either of them.
Fun fact bing Crosby and Bob hope were both born on the same month and year may 1903 they were 50 years old already in 1953🫢.
But was still very active Bob hope died in 2003 at 100.

"Rack-shellac" - slang for toothpaste. Teeth are the rack, the paste is the shellac. A reference to Bob Hope's sponsor, Pepsodent toothpaste.
