How to Create a Rainwater Collection System for Your Greenhouse

  • I want to stop having to go all the way over to the outside tap or drag the hose into the greenhouse when I am wanting water the plants. So, I am going to install a rain barrel/water butt and then rig up a system so that I can get the water piped into the greenhouse itself. This will, being "The Optimistic Greenhouse" involve something to do with pallets!

    That looks very nice. I like it exactly what I’m going to do to mine. I’m building a greenhouse now with pallets

    Love it, here in California we're in a historic drought and lots of folks are finally getting set up for rainwater collection.

      Its definitely a good idea if you can do it. Good for the plants, good for the environment :)

      I'm in southern CA and have three large rain barrels and that's not nearly enough to collect even the small amount of rain off the roof so we are adding MORE for next year. My plan is to collect every drop I can. We stopped watering our back yard and will zero scape in the fall. My meager garden is planted in root pouches and I love what I do have. Plenty of ways to save water usage in side too. Stay safe through the fire season. 👍🏼

      321ReadysSetG0 I am definitely going to be adding more barrels both sides on the greenhouse 😀 and we get lots of rain!

    Ah good. I was wondering if you were going to anchor that tippy pile. Your engineering on the greenhouses and pool deck was spot on. It seemed odd that you might leave that pallet platform to teeter under the water butt. I worry before there is necessity, I guess.

    For those requiring translation from English into Canadian, a “water butt” is a “rain barrel.” :)

    I swapped out those small taps at the rain barrel for a 3/4” PVC ball valve which provides for greater water flow. I got tired of waiting for my watering cans to fill up. Nice job on the gutters!

    • @TheOptimisticGardener
      @TheOptimisticGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers I seem to get a half decent pressure. I shall have to have two watering cans and have one filling up while I water with the other :)

    All looks good to these eyes!.....Also was wondering that little project you had with the manure in the spring was part of the greenhouse which was taken down was it not?

    • @TheOptimisticGardener
      @TheOptimisticGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, I took the greenhouse down up to that part of the remaining greenhouse. I am growing a melon and a cucumber in the manure now :) I will empty it out at the end of the season.

    You are lucky. Where I live it is illegal to collect the run-off from our roofs to water with.

      What even from a plastic roof?

    • @karenberry7143

      @@TheOptimisticGardener yes any type of roof. The powers that be claim we are denying the people down stream from us the water they are entitled to by an agreement between the two states.

    Steve, that's a great idea using pallets for the platform. I purchased a rain barrel 2 years ago, but the sun made the plastic barrel brittle, and it broke up when I tried moving it inside for the winter. I'm going to have to figure out a different catchment system to hold the rainwater. Any ideas? ~Margie

    • @TheOptimisticGardener
      @TheOptimisticGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So my first thought is not to go away from a plastic barrel. It is sunlight that destroys the plastic, so what about building a cover over the barrel so that it is shaded from the sun? Mine is fortunately on the north side of my greenhouse so protected. You can still get wooden barrels around. I am sure if you googled it you would find something. They wood be a bit more expensive.

    • @greenthumbelina7331
      @greenthumbelina7331 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOptimisticGardener Thanks for the ideas, If I can find some pallets to build the sides and a cover, that might work out perfectly. My daughter mentioned, that since I am using black-poly oval stock tanks for my raised garden beds, that maybe I should think about making some type of cover for one of them, and use it for rainwater storage. They already have a brass threaded drain hole near the bottom along one side that I can use to attach a shut-off valve and garden hose. Humm, ...now to figure out what to do.

    I always like what you do steve.. just an observation tho.. are you going to put a net over the hole at the top of the water butt so no big leaves that wash down off the roof or to stop any little animals can get in??
