  • In this video, Dr. Doug Lucas Interviews Dr. Bonnie Gasquet, a hormone specialist. They discuss hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and its impact on women's health. They cover topics such as estrogen and brain health, heart health, testosterone, hormone therapy and breast cancer. Dr. Gasquet emphasizes the importance of hormone balance and optimization for overall health and well-being. They also address the challenges and controversies surrounding HRT, including the use of pellets and the management of hormone replacement in women with a history of breast cancer. The conversation highlights the need for individualized treatment plans and the importance of educating patients about their hormone levels and options.

This channel is focused on Bones, Hormones, and Healthspan to help midlife women and beyond aim for optimal, not average, and reignite their spark!
The videos on this channel will be focused around helping women navigate healthspan and longevity through the lens of osteoporosis, perimenopause, and menopause. When it comes to osteoporosis and menopause providers and educators often get tunnel vision and your symptoms might get better, but if you don't keep longevity in mind, symptom improvement may come at the expense of heart and brain health.

Thank you Doctors. For God’s sake. We are grown women who can decide for ourselves. What we need to hear is our absolute risk (not relative risk) versus the benefits. I have had literally dozens of doctors from different disciplines tell me “you can’t have it”, with no discussion, like I am a child. The state of women’s health care is appalling.

This is so good. I live in Ireland. I got a dexa scan in my 40’s and I had osteoporosis, but that was at the time of the WHI and I was not offered HRT. I started HRT at 61 and am 66 now. Still trying to improve my bones.

This was informative. I went through menopause before I was 40 was diagnosed with MS in the same month. I have never had a conversation with any Drs. Regarding my hormones or what I should or shouldn’t be doing. I have had several fractures before I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis and now I’m trying to learn everything I can to get my self back into life. Thank you for all that you do Dr Doug.

Another great interview , thanks again. Can you look into making a video about Interleukin 6 (IL-6) in relation to Osteoporosis.
I have checked all of your videos and surprisingly this has never been covered.
If levels are elevated consistently IL-6 will increase the activity of osteolasts causing excess bone loss. (It also has a role in numerous other nasty health diseases).
You will need to interview the relevant specialist (probably in immunology).

Oh my gosh... another issue to throw in the mix. Thank you both for your talk!!
I read a good part of what you're discussing from reading a book years ago by Dr. John Lee, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause. My GYN Dr. tested my hormones a few times Years ago, but after my husband got a vasectomy, it kind of turned into a non-issue since there were no BC pills. When I asked about my bones and menopause in my future, he said I'll be fine. One time he did give me a prescription for troches, but the mint flavor was horrible and I either didn't ask for them to be replaced or I didn't have the extra money and not covered by insc. Later, I asked about testing, and he said my insc wouldn't pay for it unless I agreed to take the prescription drugs, which I didn't.
So, guess I'm one of the ones you mentioned.... no HRT and my bones are really beginning to show it. I'll soon be 72 and have gotten dexa scans since I was 45-50 (?) and every time they said I had osteopenia, but no plans for hormones. I've seen Dr's at a different clinic where my gallbladder was removed. I've been trying to get tested for electrolytes and minerals lost from bile issues, but nobody wants to help. I think that's surely effected my bones. I still have dexa and memo reports sent to my GYN. He'd also been my primary Dr until then. The primary Dr I've been seeing hasn't given any help, but after my recent dexa scan, said my femur was worse and asked if I wanted to consider a prescription medication. I'm thinking... my femur is worse??? There was no discussion about it/them being bad to begin with!! She said my spine was better, but how could that be, since I've been told that I have scoliosis! Throw in the new heart issues that are given no cause, and using a breathing machine... I'm a mess. Sorry that I went on like that. I should probably delete most of it, but it might actually warn younger women who follow you.
Back to your discussion... Here's an interesting thought,
I remember hearing Dr. Oz, I believe, saying that women get a certain amount of testosterone from their husband's. After divorce, unless you have another partner in your life, you're left without that boost.
Thank you so much! Hope I can get it together and get on a plan for some help.

I'm 65 years old and 13 years post-diagnosis with stage 3A triple positive breast cancer. Still NED and doing my best to take care of myself amid shifting recommendations. At least I've been doing Osteostrong for about 2 years, but unfortunately have been eating plant based. I have osteopenia, rheumatoid arthritis (I think possibly triggered by an aromatase inhibitor), not to mention ADHD. I'm glad to find your channel. Question: I've been told consistently that HRT is not a safe option for me, having had an aggressive hormone-receptor positive cancer. Are there new findings about that?

Similar to another person in this chat, I had stage 0 breast cancer. Treatment included partial mastectomy, radiation and aromatase inhibitor, which I didn’t”t tolerate and stopped. I too believe that the aromatase inhibitor contributed to development off inflammatory arthritis. Are there any studies linking aromatase inhibitors and inflammatory arthritis?

Estradiol is expensive but works well for the brain as well as the traditional symptoms. My doctor was concerned about having a break where I wasn't on hormones and then restarting them. I almost wasn't able to get them. The big problem is the doctors just don't have good information.

My Oncologist never read my bone density tests and put me on Prolia which was an absolute nightmare. My wrists swelled up so badly I had to have wrist surgery on both wrists. My body has ached horribly. I finally found a Wonderful Endocrinologist who is furious with my Oncologist for this negligence. I am now on Fosamax 35 mg and still trying to get my life back to as close to what it was before. And still on Anastrozole to quelch hormones to help prevent Breast Cancer from reoccurring.

My estrodial is 10!! So do i need to increase my dose? During perimenopause i suffered with extreme breast cysts, 100's of tiny cysts unbelievable pain constantly, i now wonder if hrt could have helped at that stage. Instead i took high dose of evening primrose oil (advised by doctors at royal marsden cancer specialists !) and was plummeted straight into the menopause, after just a few weeks of taking evening primrose. I find if i increase the estrodial the breast cysts return, i guess it's a balancing act. Brain health wise i have dyslexia, dyscalculia and a language disorder, includes regular brain fog and word finding issues, never could learn names, can't remember faces, and generally very poor memory, since childhood. I have put these issues down to my microbiom but i wonder if my hormones have been out of whack my whole life, and my brain never developed as it should??!! Of course we would have no idea if i had Alzheimer's!!! Fascinating area of research unfolding, thanks guys

I’m in perimenopause turning 51 this year. I want HRT but my roadblock is multiple Drs say
I have to wait till menopause
The amount of estrogen body is currently producing is more than what I would get with HRT
Take birth control pills instead. I’m unwilling to because of stroke risk.
I’m frustrated and don’t know what to do.
