I love your video. You think about almost anything we need to know. I really appreciate it because I'm thinking of making my own dentures since I actually don't trust dentists on account of a bad experience from a dentist that messed up my mouth and couldn't eat for a few years. Is the bottom denture a full denture (with no teeth to attach to) ? Do you have any problems with the bottom denture moving around? All the dentists where i live are saying that i won't be happy with bottom dentures and i will need implants. What do you think? @@HandyTim
@DrPaulsDentalWorld Thank you for your reply. Dental materials for the crown prep. Polysiloxane or silicone? What do you use for the temporary crown? What cement do you cement the temp with? I've started to teach Dental Materials, and I'm explaining the different elastomeric mats avaliable. The role of the DDS and the assistant. It's hard for the students to visualize the procedure. I came across your clear, and succinct presentation, and thought you'd be a phenomenal help. I shared your video of the alginate with them. They loved it. Thank you very much.
Ah OK. Very broad topics and one where there isn't going to be a right or wrong answer. For me I use polyvinylsiloxane with a light body on the tooth and heavy body in the tray and then seat the tray. For the temp crown I have a video on how to make them, which you may find useful. Currently using a rein temp cement which I like, but previously have used tempbond
Liked it all . Very nicely explained. My only small suggestion would be to stick to the powder:water ratio as per the manufacturer. Yellow(Ainsworth) dental stone is 100gm powder : 30 ml water . My lab guy said adding more water may impact the strength of the cast and may fracture while they make special trays etc .
Thanks for the tip Keith. I'd be surprised if the cast would break during making special trays (and if it did, would it really matter if it's just for special trays?), but still something to consider 👌
Is like the samething with my manager he told follow the rule on the box material when it said 100gm and 30ml water. He will get angry if I add water. Because when i do that the stone tend to dry so quickly which get me the rushing point
@@timothysol7858 may be consider the temperature of water . Also if you add the 100G powder in increments the material sets quickly as it previous increment gets more nucleus for setting process.
May I comment as a patient? PLEASE, above all...LISTEN to your patient! I have severe emetophobia (fear of vomiting), which causes panic attacks if I even only start gagging. I've struggled with this my whole life. You can imagine how big of an impact it had on my oral health. I was talked into a top denture in my 20's, without warning of what I was going to experience. They knew of my phobia right off the bat. When they went to take my impression, of course, I had a panic attack. It was embarrassing, but I had no control over it. Then, the actual dentist came in, took the tray, forced it in my mouth, and held it there as I threw up twice in his hand. I should've left after that, I know, but all I wanted was a smile I wasn't embarrassed about. I heard them break every single tooth. I was shaking so hard you could hear my legs hitting the chair. I had tears spilling over into my hair because I couldn't wipe them away. They never once asked if I was okay or if I needed a break. They kept going (it was the dentist and his assistant only), talking casually over my face like I wasn't there. Of course, my denture came back uneven, the roof of it partially touching one side, hanging to my tongue on the other. I was devastated. That was around 15 years ago. It traumatized me. Always thought about "all-on-fours" so I could cut the roof out, but never could afford it. I should've left that day. I should've never let that man talk me into such an extreme procedure when I probably didn't need it yet. Sorry, I didn't mean to go on such a long rant lol got myself crying over here. But please, always make sure you listen to your patients. This phobia may seem silly to some, but it's very real. I hate it and wish I didn't have it.
That sounds like a nightmare WORSE then one I'm currently enduring 🥺 I 1000% agree w/ u as I'm undergoing near identical treatment myself 💔 Always hated the idea of dentures, in midst of snap ins due for the uncovering in Feb & literally all my issues, complaints, suffering & set backs have been ignored 😡 I'd give anything to go back, however, ALL my teeth had been rootcanaled which after 6yrs were failing major so the options were not there for me 😭😭😭😭 Heartbroken & devastated,,,, praying my permanent are done well & properly 🙏🙏🙏 Hope things are better for u ❤
Listening to what a patients wants sometimes, differs greatly from what a patient needs for better health. If the teeth were infected then taking them out was the best choice health wise, regardless of feelings.
That is so horrible! I’ve been watching a lot of videos like this and apparently that’s how they are taught, to hold it there while it cures no matter what, puke and all. They should have at the very least warned you of that when you told them about your gagging and asked you if you were okay!
@theword2011 they weren't infected. Not quite sure how you got that from my comment? I had bonding performed some time before that, which was not only a huge waste of money but a big regret. It constantly chipped, starting a week after it was done. Eventually, one of them cracked in a big way, and then everything just went downhill. I have learned over the last few years that I have issues with my vitamin D AND my bones, at 42, are thin and I have osteoporosis. Not sure what effects that may have had on my teeth, if any. That still doesn't take away from my experience.
Thank you, Dr. Paul, for showing and demonstrating the technique of taking good Dental impressions with ALIGNATE. The dentist usually asks to breathe through the nose which has not been possible with my mouth open. Any tips?
This is a great video and since I was a dental technician before becoming a dentist I poured thousands of models. The only comment is that I never let any of my assistants leave dried stone on The spatula or on the model trimmer. It looks too messy if your patients have to come into the lab for some reason.
Thank you very much for this sir. Am a second year dental technology student, having seen this video i feel like what we're taught in class is only about 60%.
Thank. You so much sir I understood it so well Well i am a first year dental student And we have been given dental stone cast to make impressions with the impression compound 😅 But thanks for making. My concepts clear
I am a master dental technician. Thank you for this video trying to train Dr’s and assistant on how to take impressions and pour them,It’s like pulling teeth.😁
I got my hawley wire and it was really tight and moved my front teeth + canines inward and so it now hits the bottom front set of teeth. The dentist said doesn't "know what your expectations are" cus she looked at it with the retainer in my mouth and said nothing wromg with the fit visually. I told her " I expect no pain and movement such now my lower front teeth hit the top front teeth". I even took it home for a few days to try and it wasn't working out. Don't know if adhesive would have made my mold fit better.
If you feel like it isn't fitting properly, and it caused your other teeth to move, I would look at getting them to make you another one. You could possibly get a clear retainer instead.
Nicely done but very old school. Nowadays non need for Alginat anymore since almost everyone in Germany would use a camera and take digital impressions. I did it since 30years using the cerec system. And patients came because of it.
Thank you for this video 😢, i have only started to working in making stones from dental impression in French, i tried to understand as much as possible the process but there's limitation with language barrier, your video clarifies a lot of things! How long do you think for someone with no dentistry background to master the art of making stone without bubbles?
I'm glad the video helped 🙌 If you follow all of the steps, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get it close to to perfect quite quickly. Maybe after 5 or so models
In uni we cant use the vibrator for the plaster ( we are still doing finger impressions as a start) what can i do to reduce the air bubbles other than tapping it?
This is what my dentist did & made perfect impressions. He pressed them up & held for about 2min & popped the upper out & repeat for the lower. I go back in 2 weeks for wax try in's
Hope you can answer a question for me... I have a VERY small mouth. Even with the smallest size tray my dentist had I felt like the corners of my mouth were going to split to get that tray in. They basically forced it in. Should it be that difficult to get a tray in a patients mouth or should I ask for a smaller tray to be procured procured. My immediate dentures were so big for my mouth. If the tray is too big, wouldn't it make the dentures too big as well? Thanks for your time. ❤
It shouldn't be that difficult to get a small tray in, but some people simply have very small mouths, you might be in that category. Does that affect the immediate dentures? No. The impression is taken, and the dentures are made from the impression of your mouth. Even if the tray is too big, it doesn't make the impression too big (not sure if that makes sense). Immediate dentures are always bulky and will feel that way.
@misfitkitties no problem, good luck with it! Be prepared for the immediate to be not very good for the first 6months (it takes about that long for the bone and gums to heal and stabilise)
I have zero dental experience, but I'm interested in trying to become a fangsmith, would you have any advice? Thank you for this video and your channel!
No idea sorry. Best bet would be to shadow/work for free for someone who does it. I don't make those devices so wouldn't be able to recommend anything more than that
Im havinga hell of a time finding an impression tray to fit , I still have 5 teeth uppers but theyve been grown over a decade ago. but it means I have thick gums where the teeth still are. ... Because of this I cant find an impression try with a wide enough valley in the backs.
Gday. Thanks for making the video. After getting shocking dentures that top & bottom did not mate, the lower plate had teeth that were way too high (I use to have a nice smile, now all you see is bottom teeth & you cant even see the top teeth which ruined my smile) and all the teeth were too far in and slanted inwards, totally unnatural feeling which also made my cheeks and lips appear sucked in. I hated it. I cant & wont wear them and refused to pay for them they were that bad. This was all done thru the Adelaide Public Dental Clinic. So I decided to make them myself as I have used resins, silicones, alginates, & plaster working in Special FX, plug & mold making. I will certainly like & subscribe... but I was wondering if you could provide links to get the materials - preferably in Australia. Thanks m8. ✌
Hi Philip, the things you will need can be found doing a google search. We are linked with dental supply companies, but you have to be a dental practice to get them. Off the top of my head you need - Alginate powder - Impression tray - Dental yellow stone - Light cured acrylic to make a custom impression tray - Polyvinyl siloxane for the second impression - Plaster of Paris for the second model (better than yellow stone) - Pink wax to make wax rims - Acrylic teeth - Investing box - Methyl methacrylate acrylic to make the denture By the time you've bought all of this, the cost will be similar to making a denture. You may also not get it right. It's very hard (as you have seen). Don't go to a public system. They don't do these enough, and because they are hard, they don't always turn out well. Go to a dental prosthetist - their job is making dentures. They aren't dentists so often their fees are less.
Thank you for your reply. Yes it does work out expensive - but I have found DIY Denture kits to be a lot more cost effective. I was thinking of buying the materials thru Alliexpress - China.. but still expensive and noted there are a number of different molding techniques on TH-cam
Thanks Alot. Very well explained. I have 3 questions. Kindly help me. 1. Is it fine to everytime put a little alginate on teeth before seating the tray? 2. How to avoid model breakage while seperating it from tray? Does adhesive helps there? 3. How to proceed if model gets broken?
You're welcome! 1. Yes, do this to stop air bubbles 2. You have to get it off slowly and also make sure that the base is thick enough. This is mentioned in the video 3. Either take a new impression or super glue them back together
Very informative video and easy to follow, thanks for this. Is the molding process the same if there's missing teeth, like 2 front teeth missing and no chompers on the bottom?
Sorry, I only just saw this! It depends on how many scoopa you use, and also the alginate recommendations (they are all a bit different, and also normally come with a measuring container)
Sorry I can't, because the powder to water ratio is normally specific to the type of alginate you use. If you don't measure, you will just have to practise and get a feel for what it should feel like.
quick question...slightly off topic...when you are fabricating bleaching trays, do you use block-out, or some type of material to create space before using the thermoplastic machine?
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld so there is no need to create space for the material to sit evenly on the teeth? Does it work evenly? Leave splotches, or areas that are more bright than other areas?
Hi there! The vibrator isn't necessary for the mixing but it is important for getting the plaster into the impression. If you don't have a vibrator I would make the mix a bit more runny so that it flows in easier, and you may want to tap it on the bench to help that
I love your tips and tricks. But I attend to use more water just to flow easier but the dry time is like 7 - 10 minutes. But the good news is it end up the same result. But I want to know is it bad to add extra water to make the stone kinda watery
I understand that if you use more water, it can affect the expansion of the stone. Probably won't make a big difference for things like custom trays, but maybe if you are using it as a definitive cast for things like whitening or a splint. But, if you jage been doing it, with success, then it should be fine 👌
When you said effect the expansion is that bad or good or doesn't matter?. Also when I wait for the stone to be dried up I tend to wait to 33 or 35 minutes more longer because due extra water. Because other day I will wait 30 minutes to dry up
Good question! They use a different material that is meant to be stable over time so they should be as accurate as possible. I do question the accuracy of the material over time, but I assume it is good. The difficulty for you will be taking the impression. You can use the tips from this video about how to seat the tray etc. Just make sure that it sits passively over the teeth, and when you seat it, it goes down far enough over the teeth to completely cover them.
Hey great video, if I’m making a wax mould from the impression do I need to trim down the excess and if so what should I use if I don’t have that machine you have?
The alginate and stone are both from Henry schein halas. To be honest, you can use any alginate and any stone. The key with alginate is to make sure that you pour it into stone very quickly. With the stone, the accuracy probably won't make much difference because this is a primary impression
Hi, I have a couple gold teeth, I don’t want the putty to pull out my gold teeth when making an impression. Is there anything I can put on my teeth before taking impression, I read that Vaseline can be good… Do you have any recommendations, thanks in advance :)
PS. I had taken an impression before and felt like it was going to rip out my gold teeth, fortunately it did not, but I’m scared as I need to take a new impression on this weekend.
Vaseline is a good idea. Don't use an impression material that sets too hard, like Impregum. The others should be ok. For worst case, alginate would be better because it sets softer than the others
Thank you kindly for your quick reply, I have a blue coloured mix, I’ll have to double check the ingredients… nonetheless I’ll most likely use it with Vaseline as a few different dental blogs said the same thing… I’ll let you know the results and also check the putty that you recommended now. Again, many thanks 🙏
I have had several teeth pulled in the back and had one break off above the gumline. I have a severe painful condition, called RSD or more commonly CRPS. The disease has spread throughout my entire body, and after my last spinal stimulator implant, damaged my spine, even further, the disease has spread into my spine, which makes it so that I cannot tolerate laying on my back, or bending my neck backwards, standing up, or laying on my side for very long periods of time. It has kept me from going in to have this tooth fixed. It is rotten and black. I am concerned that I may get a bad infection, or or worse, lead to death if left untreated. I don't know what to do. Was hoping you may have some suggestions. I have a very difficult time chewing on my back teeth since none of them are lining up properly anymore from having so many pulled over the last several years due to my illness. Please help!
Sounds like you need to visit a dentist, and probably one who deals specifically with special needs patients. They often have the skills/tools required to work around tricky situations like what you just described. There isn't really much more I can recommend to be honest.
No, you want to use dental stone. I believe that plaster of paris is not accurate enough, and is often only used for mounting of models on an articulator
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld Perfect, thanks Dr Paul! I had some stoneplast powder lying around but even that was not accurate enough, so will get some dental stone for next time!
Sorry for asking sir. What is this ectually for?. Last week i was at my dentist and this was done for me. I know i am to have a crown on one of my teeth but my dentist didnt explain what he was doing. The only thing he told me was is going to be expensive if i have to pay alone.
We take a mould of your teeth to make them into a model. If you had a crown done, the mould is taken so a model of the crown tooth can be made, and the crown is made from that. So next time you go in, they will glue the crown onto your tooth, and as long as the mould is accurate it will fit perfectly
How would you put it in water to transport it to the lab? Wet paper is perfect because it keeps it moist and it stays wrapped around it until you're ready to pour it up
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld container (like small plastic box)? Keeps it moist better if the lab is far away. If the lab is 5 seconds away from you we do it this way: sanitize the impression, take it to the lab, put it into rubber flask filled with water (I mean the same kind of thing you mix the stone in). Then when you’re ready to pour it up, you do it. If Wrapped in wet paper towel the impression may particularly get dry and it’s accuracy decreases. Of course if you cast the model immediately that’s not worth talking about. But if you do it after 20-30 minutes (maybe you or technician was busy), put it into water first and it’s ok 👌🏼
We always pour up within 30 mins but more likely 5mins. A container is a good idea for longer term, but if you put it in wet paper towel it will stay moist for at least an hour or so. I've never had a problem with drying, even in cases where it wasn't poured for a few hours (at my last practice where I had to do it myself).
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld by longer term I never mean two or three hours (for alginate mass). It must be poured up within 1 hour. A simple experiment: get two alginate impressions from the same one jaw (upper jaw for example); pour up one immediately and wrap the second with wet paper towel for two+ hours, then pour it up. You get two models, they look similar. Take a base wax lamina and apply it on the first model like you are going to make a plastic denture, so you get a wax base of the jaw. Then try to put that wax base on the second model. It will fit differently. Anyway, thank you for the video, nice job doc👍
Go to 5:25 of the video and it explains it - rub alginate onto the teeth before taking the imp - make sure your mixing technique is good - proper technique when transferring to the tray - water on the outside surface to smooth it

Could you do crown prep and explain what type of materials you use?
Thank you.
Materials for the crown prep impression or the crown?

Thank you for your reply.
Dental materials for the crown prep.
Polysiloxane or silicone?
What do you use for the temporary crown? What cement do you cement the temp with?
I've started to teach Dental Materials, and I'm explaining the different elastomeric mats avaliable.

My lab guy said adding more water may impact the strength of the cast and may
fracture while they make special trays etc .
Thanks for the tip Keith. I'd be surprised if the cast would break during making special trays (and if it did, would it really matter if it's just for special trays?), but still something to consider 👌
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld special trays ,etc .
👌👌
Sounds like a terrible experience, sorry to hear!
That sounds like a nightmare WORSE then one I'm currently enduring 🥺 I 1000% agree w/ u as I'm undergoing near identical treatment myself 💔 Always hated the idea of dentures, in midst of snap ins due for the uncovering in Feb & literally all my issues, complaints, suffering & set backs have been ignored 😡
I'd give anything to go back, however, ALL my teeth had been rootcanaled which after 6yrs were failing major so the options were not there for me 😭😭😭😭
Heartbroken & devastated,,,, praying my permanent are done well & properly 🙏🙏🙏
Hope things are better for u ❤
Any tips?
Any tips on how to breathe through your nose while your mouth is open?
Nothing comes to mind apart from "breathe through your nose" 🤷♂️
This is a great video and since I was a dental technician before becoming a dentist I poured thousands of models. The only comment is that I never let any of my assistants leave dried stone on The spatula or on the model trimmer. It looks too messy if your patients have to come into the lab for some reason.

Can you do a video how to make the suction plate so we don't have to use the goops please
I don't know what you're talking about sorry
What brand of alginate do you use? Btw. Great video! It was really helpful 😊😊

This is what my dentist did & made perfect impressions. He pressed them up & held for about 2min & popped the upper out & repeat for the lower. I go back in 2 weeks for wax try in's
Sounds good!
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld Ok, thank you for your quick reply. Just wanted to make sure I didn't sound ignorant to my dentist tomorrow 😂.
@misfitkitties no problem, good luck with it! Be prepared for the immediate to be not very good for the first 6months (it takes about that long for the bone and gums to heal and stabilise)

Cheers Ben, I'll try and keep them coming!
thank you so much for this video. May I ask where can I get the Fix Adhesive?
We buy ours from Henry Schein, but if you type in "fix adhesive alginate" you will get lots of results
Off the top of my head you need
- Alginate powder
- Impression tray
- Dental yellow stone
- Light cured acrylic to make a custom impression tray
- Polyvinyl siloxane for the second impression
- Plaster of Paris for the second model (better than yellow stone)
- Pink wax to make wax rims
- Acrylic teeth
- Investing box
- Methyl methacrylate acrylic to make the denture
By the time you've bought all of this, the cost will be similar to making a denture.
@phillipmoritz8021 good luck with it!
1. Yes, do this to stop air bubbles
2. You have to get it off slowly and also make sure that the base is thick enough. This is mentioned in the video
3. Either take a new impression or super glue them back together
Thank you so much sir it is really an very useful video for students who are posted in department
Great to hear, I'm glad you liked it 🙌
Very informative video and easy to follow, thanks for this. Is the molding process the same if there's missing teeth, like 2 front teeth missing and no chompers on the bottom?
Yes for sure. Maybe more important for missing teeth
I've midterm exam tomorrow 🥲 how much water would you typically need for mandibular impression?
Sorry, I only just saw this! It depends on how many scoopa you use, and also the alginate recommendations (they are all a bit different, and also normally come with a measuring container)
Could you please tell me how to measure the water without the cup? Because in my dental office they don’t use cup when mixing alginate
Sorry I can't, because the powder to water ratio is normally specific to the type of alginate you use. If you don't measure, you will just have to practise and get a feel for what it should feel like.
Thanks alot.
Is there a pdf file or book that presents what you have said in this video?
Not that I know of sorry! This is all from my own learnings
quick question...slightly off topic...when you are fabricating bleaching trays, do you use block-out, or some type of material to create space before using the thermoplastic machine?
No, the idea of doing this was stopped a long time ago 👌
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld so there is no need to create space for the material to sit evenly on the teeth? Does it work evenly? Leave splotches, or areas that are more bright than other areas?
Steps: make model, vacuum form tray over the model, remove tray from the model and trim. Done
I’m going to make my own denture. I needed to know where I can get these products please?
It's hard for a non dentist to buy them though. Google will be the best place to start. Sorry I can't be more helpful
Good day! Are there any tips that you can give for those who are not using a vibrator for mixing alginate and plaster powder? thank you!
Hi there! The vibrator isn't necessary for the mixing but it is important for getting the plaster into the impression. If you don't have a vibrator I would make the mix a bit more runny so that it flows in easier, and you may want to tap it on the bench to help that
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld thank you!
You're welcome 🙌
Absolutely lifesaver video ! Learnt a lot here! Thank you !
Good to hear, I hope it helps!
Because other day I will wait 30 minutes to dry up
I think you saw the comment from Keith, yes?
Does the finger spreading alginate technique work for edentulous spans as well?
Yeah it sure does! Just make sure to spread it around the undercut areas
What do you recommend if you have to mail you’re impressions back to keep them accurate?
Good question! They use a different material that is meant to be stable over time so they should be as accurate as possible. I do question the accuracy of the material over time, but I assume it is good.
The difficulty for you will be taking the impression. You can use the tips from this video about how to seat the tray etc. Just make sure that it sits passively over the teeth, and when you seat it, it goes down far enough over the teeth to completely cover them.
This is the best video ever❤❤
Thank you!
Hey great video, if I’m making a wax mould from the impression do I need to trim down the excess and if so what should I use if I don’t have that machine you have?
You don't technically need to trim, it just makes it easier to make the wax mould. Without the machine, not much else you can use that I know of
@@DrPaulsDentalWorld Thanks this helped a lot, also what should I do if the alginate gets a bit clumpy?
It shouldn't get clumpy if you mix it properly and in the right proportions, and the water temp is not too warm.
If it does, start again.
@@DrPaulsDentalWorldthanks
Great explanation 👏👍
Thank you!
Hello. Thanks for your sharing the process. Can you tell us which materials do you use for alginate and the stone, please?
The alginate and stone are both from Henry schein halas.
To be honest, you can use any alginate and any stone. The key with alginate is to make sure that you pour it into stone very quickly. With the stone, the accuracy probably won't make much difference because this is a primary impression
Nice video but where do I purchase the materials ? thank you
Any dental supply company. You want to get dental stone
Hi,
I have a couple gold teeth, I don’t want the putty to pull out my gold teeth when making an impression.
The blue coloured mix that you have probably is alginate.
Thanks, Dr. Paul

We take a mould of your teeth to make them into a model. If you had a crown done, the mould is taken so a model of the crown tooth can be made, and the crown is made from that. So next time you go in, they will glue the crown onto your tooth, and as long as the mould is accurate it will fit perfectly

It's covered in the video...
This is a legendary video thanks doc.
You're welcome!
12:44 what about putting it into water instead of wrapping with wet paper? Some of the alginate masses start to deform too fast.
