Hi Amy! I really like the way you explain things and offer so many great tips. You're the first person I know that has mentioned the crystals in the pastels. I've heard many times not to blend them but never the why behind it. That makes so much sense! And your landscapes are just beautiful.
Yes, I agree- wonder what your thoughts are on Pan pastels- maybe there is no real difference, but I would love to know your thoughts on them. Maybe do the same landscape using the different varieties of pastels. Thank you!
@@sirensong3556 I used PanPastles in this video: th-cam.com/video/a3CsJ6dCC9w/w-d-xo.html and in this video: th-cam.com/video/VEtOfGTVyPM/w-d-xo.html Check them out and see what you think!
I would love to see your normal process from start to finish using your new pastels. I have tried pastels in the past but I haven’t gotten the best results. Your painting is beautiful, I look forward to seeing more. Thank you
That's definitely on my list to do! I usually do an underpainting with either watercolors, or harder pastels. One of my big problems is that I always use to use Prismacolor Nupastels for the underpaintings, but they have discontinued the open stock and I've used up all my favorite colors! I've been searching for some harder soft pastels that are lightfast to use for underpaints. I think the Rembrandt soft pastels might be a good fit, but they are still a little softer then what I am used to and I am still figuring things out! Isn't that the way of things? Just when you get a good system down, everything changes! Thank you for taking the it me to watch my video!
I’m sorry you’re not completely happy with this painting. But, I for one adore the impressionistic painterly feel! I was so excited when I saw the thumbnail earlier! I waited till I could sit down to fully enjoy your process. You are a wonderfully skilled artist and your channel is going to explode! You have a wonderful warm welcoming personality that is going to draw viewers in droves! 💜💜💜
That is such a kind thing to say and you really brightened up my day for me! Thank you so very much for the encouragement! It meant more than you know today! 🧡🧡🧡
Gorgeous! You are so incredibly talented! And you make it look SO easy! Luckily, I'm smart enough to know it's not or I'd be running off to buy Senneliers knowing I wouldn't know what to do with them even if they came with a color by numbers book. 😅 I love your channel. I love to see you growing and becoming more confident with each video. I celebrate your continued growth and can't wait to see what you will be doing next. 💕
Such an informative video with great explanations. I know you see imperfections and things you wish you had done differently, but all I see it a beautiful piece of artwork that reminds me of Scotland's rolling hills, and tree lined lochs 💜
Love the color choices & composition. My early AM brain is dusting your painting with a white layer of season du jour. Invisible Glove is great for so many different mediums, when getting dirty in the workshop, and when gardening!
Beautiful painting! A company sent me a set of soft pastels to review so it was fun watching your process. I’m glad you brought up the pigment toxicity and invisible gloves. I just talked about that in my video yesterday because my bloodwork showed high levels of heavy metals. I think a lot of people are not aware of the dangers.
Oh no! That's not good at all! I hope you can get everything taken care of and it turns out okay! I should have mentioned my hepa filter next to my easel and the fact that I wear a face mask sometimes too, with pastels, when I'm not filming. That's one thing about the pastels, the dust can be a problem health wise. I do think a lot of people are not aware of the fact that sometimes pigments can be toxic, and it us spread across all mediums. Like a real cadmium red is going to be toxic whether it is in pastel, watercolor, oil paints, etc. Thank you so much for watching and I hope the health situation gets cleared up safely for you!
@@winterwoodsstudio Thanks. I’ve been trying to clear my body of the heavy metals from art supplies for years. It’s very hard to rid the body of heavy metals especially with autoimmune detox issues. I’m so glad that more and more TH-cam creators are educating their viewers about it.
@@BeginnersMind-ArtMind I've been very worried about it myself. It's why I don't use oil paints unless it's warm enough to open all the windows, or to actually paint outside. I really hope you manage to clear it and feel better.❤

Thank you so much! I Do love the colors in it! Isn't it funny how when we put something away for awhile and then come back to it, we like it so much better? Thank you for watching!
Hullo Amy, I have discovered that using only 1 type of pastel to create a painting is not an easy option. It can be done and your impressionistic feel is actually very lovely! I have started with soft pastels because I want to move into a more impressionistic feeling in my paintings! Pipe insulation or pool noodles are good for blending those under/first layers and save the skin on your fingers when using sanded papers! Sennelier sticks are soft so if you plan ahead you can use alcohol to thin your first few layers and keep more tooth for more layers. I am glad you continue to work in pastels and I look forward to more! Excellent video! I will keep watching and will see ya next time!
I haven't tried pipe insulation yet, although I did use a pool noodle in this video! It was alright. I still like blending with my fingers best but it does get rough!
@@winterwoodsstudio heh! I have already sanded my finger tips bloody! Stupid getting carried away, but just be careful with sanded papers! Especially if you try a course surface like a 320 or 280!! 400 is the best I have tried, 800 does not have enough tooth for my heavy hand. Good luck!
Your painting is beautiful! Even though I don’t do pastels myself, I totally can understand your recommendation for beginners. Just by looking at your informative video I grasp the concept of mapping out lights and darks and compared to watercolours it looks so much easier! I find that small value sketches can help with this if you have the time. Great tip about the shadows on the water!
I have got a smaller set of these and need to give them a try. I’ll take some of your suggestions and give it a go. Your pastel painting is wonderful 😊
An excellent video, combining education and entertainment. Although it's unlikely I'll ever move into pastels myself, I have always loved the effects they can give (Degas' ballet dancers being an obvious example) and it was fascinating to hear you describe the processes involved in creating a finished piece - including the problem you encountered using a too-soft pastel for the underlay. The painting still turned out beautifully, though, and it'll be interesting to see your future videos where I'm sure you'll be trying an underlay that doesn't fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly. In the meantime, thanks again for this video - it was much appreciated. Kind regards, Brian.
It was Degas who originally made me want to try pastels! I love his work! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for continuing to watch and comment!❤
It still turned out really pretty tho. I’m looking forward to seeing you do more paintings using pastels… I have that Paris set and the nu pastels but I have no idea how to start or what to do with them.. some of the other pastels artists I’ve watched I feel are too advanced for me. Your videos feel more approachable.
It turned out beautifully! I've found that sometimes you can make a more impressionist looking painting seem more detailed by just adding a few very detailed objects in the foreground. (Something I learned from Jerry Yarnell, lol.)
That is an excellent idea and thanks for the tip! I looked around and I do indeed have a book by him on my shelf! I've been reading it a little before bed each night! Thank you for watching!❤

@@winterwoodsstudio Have you used Sennelier fixative? I tried three brands several years ago, searching for workable & final protection. I believe Sennelier had the least color shift & worked for both applications.

@@winterwoodsstudio Glad you have it on hand to try out! I used it for a mixed media application that was largely pastels, other pigments & papers on a claybord substrate, so am not certain how well it will perform as a workable fixative in a traditional pastel application. Sorry I didn't even think to mention that earlier. I do recall using a very light coat, which allowed me to add a little more pastel or some of the other pigments.
