The BEST BEST BEST beginners tutorial for pastels EVER! You are an excellent and organized teacher and excel at simplifying difficult concepts - Bravo! ❤
Thanks for this video. I picked up a set of pastels on clearance thinking they were oil pastels and learned there are soft pastels that are different! This was really helpful to get started with them.
At 51 and just retired from the UK Armed Forces and bored I have just started on Pastels, I cannot afford the ones used here yet so just picked up some cheap ones, but looking at your patreon page and the images you have made are mind blowing and a real inspiration, fantastic video and amazing art. Subbed.
Wow - this is exactly what I've been searching for here in the UK. Thank you for such a comprehensive guide - I can now buy materials better informed. I respect your aim for accuracy in your pieces - this will be my aim. I look forward to your charcoal and graphite analysis in due course. Finally beginning in my sixties! Thank you, Shaymus for sharing your knowledge in an excellent presentation.

Hi Cynthia, Thank you for the lovely comment, I’m so pleased you like the tutorial! Glad you like the artwork too, I look forward to bringing out more helpful videos this year 😊
Thanks for such a helpful video. The blending section helped a lot. I saw the vacuum and laughed because I bought a keyboard vacuum to help me with dust. It's tiny but it really works.
Thanks for watching & I’m glad it helped! Haha yeah they’re not very powerful, always use a household hoover with a HEPA filter to make sure it captures as much as possible 😊
I have enjoyed this tutorial. Helpful for beginner or professional artists. I have been doing animal portraits for over 40 years. But I can always do more.
Hi Shaymus, thank you for all those hours of hard work you put in order to present us with the most amazing plethera of information! It truly is outstanding! Thank you for caring enough to dedicate your valuable time to us; especial as you are also busy with your job as an Animal Artist. Everything you have shown us, is most appreciated. I only got as far as my A level Art class in secondary school, but always felt disappointed throughout my time learning art. The reason for that was because from my GCE class, I was just foisted into my O-level class for 2 lessons, then foisted into my A-level class without being given the opportunity to learn the fundamental foundations of drawing or painting Art. I left school not understanding shading or blending or texturizing etc, it was a wasted education. The time I spent watching your video today, taught me so much more than ALL the Art lessons I had in school put together. I now know the correct tools and materials to purchase and a better understanding of the use of colour, light and creating shade and tone. I am very interested to knowhow you arrived at becoming an Animal Artist. I will definitely consider becoming a Patreon 👩🎨❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍☺
Hi Odean, Thank you for leaving such a lovely comment, I really appreciate it! You’re more than welcome, I really hope this video has been able to answer any questions that you may have had. I also had a similar disappointing learning experience at university so I know how you feel! Luckily there is tonnes to learn from just on TH-cam alone 😊 Good luck with your art journey!
This is the best instructional video on soft pastels I've seen (and I've watched a lot). Along with the product recommendations and demonstrations, an invaluable resource. Thanks so much, Shaymus!
This was the luckiest find to stumble into this video. I got some professional soft pastels for an amazing price and wanted to know how to use them. Thank you for all the time you put into this video.
You take my breath away, your art work is absolutely gorgeous ,and I have seen alot of artists at work, you are by far the best I've have ever seen.I wish you a long prosperous future of art ahead of you, many many happy years ahead.
This video is incredible. Covers all the bases and safety. Thank you i wasn't even thinking about the dust danger! But seriously, you covered all the bases, including paper, tools, brands, techniques, sharpening, dust control, art storage, and bears oh my! Your art is incredible. I'm so excited to begin using pastels.
Thank you for sharing such a vast array of information and knowledge. I’ve been a colour pencil artist for years and am transitioning to pastels to try and push my realism a bit further. Your videos have been invaluable.
What a comprehensive lesson on soft pastel. Thank you for covering everything from how to shaper pencils to how to stoke and frame. This is the most info I've seen on a beginner tutorial. Just brilliant. Thanks again.
This is a great guide video. Talking about your experience, showing your own techniques, and the most fascinating thing is your work at the end! It's really marvellous.
Hi Seamus, thanks for the excellent video. I'm 67 and just starting out. Have used watercolour, acrylic, oil and pastel at art classes. I only loved pastels. So have decided to use this medium. Your videos will be so helpful to me ❤
Thank you very much for this excellent and very thorough video. I look forward to acquiring a few supplies and working with pastels in the new year. If you put this much thought, organization, production and clarity of detail into your TH-cam videos, I'm sure that your Patreon tutorials will be fantastic! I look forward to learning more from you in the future. Thank you very much for this!
This is by far the most comprehensive tutorial on pastels I have seen. So much information that it’s worth watching multiple times to take it all in. Thank you, thank you!
And I really like how you explained everything very clearly, not only with words but with showing us as well. Most people do not explain this clearly. Congratulations on being an excellent teacher!! 😊 And I appreciate that you mention the safety part too!

I agree with the ppl below- you have a great teaching style. Thank you for your time and effort in making the video and your work is really beautiful.
Thank you! I just got my first soft pastels in like 25 years and have no idea how to use them! This video was so helpful. I do not see the supply links you mentioned though.
Thank you! I’m glad to hear it was useful for you 😊 the link to all my favourite materials and tools is under the ‘My FAQ & Favourite Soft Pastel & Pastel Pencil Materials and Tools List’ bullet point in the description. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much. The advice is invaluable. And your art is incredible. I'm so impressed. I doubt I'll ever do much, but hopefully your very clear instructions will inspire me to try.
@@shaymusart I recently tried something with a few cheap pastels I had, but with the wrong paper, the wrong techniques and no real tools, it wasn't great. So I found you online and felt totally overwhelmed by yout talent. I'm 80 and pretty good with a pencil. However, It's never too late to learn something new, right?
Thank you for this comprehensive video! I love how clearly and calmly you explain and show everything. Really a pleasure to watch :) And your work is amazing, of course!
Awesome video! Appeared in my recommendations and fittingly I always wondered how soft pastels are supposed to be used and you gave a real good introduction to the tools and techniques ☺️🙏
Thank you so much. Your guides are some of the best. I’m a colored pencil artist that does hyper realism, but I want to try Pastel Pencils because of how much faster it is to work compared to colored pencil. I need a break from colored pencil and pastel pencils look so much fun and expressive
That was truly amazing! Thank you so much for such a comprehensive tutorial! I have no idea about pastels and feel so informed now and ready to begin learning.
I’m so happy to have stumbled on your video. I have a question about the Cretacolor black. Would you recommend using that rather than a black pastel pencil. I’m new to pastel and I want to create a painting of a favorite dog belonging to my son who was black (primarily)and white for Christmas. Thanks.
I love this. My space is all white and I get a lot of glares, especially when working with darker backgrounds. I never thought to darken the walls. Very nice!
I only recently painted the wall dark brown from white, it’s much easier to see the colours against a dark background and everything looks less washed out on camera when compared to a white background 😊
Great video. I worked in soft pastel from 1970 -1993. I’m retired and returning to pastels and your video has helped me greatly. I used to use a velvet/velour type paper which I enjoyed but I don’t see any mention of this canvas. I’m ordering the sand style to give it a try. What are your thoughts on the velvet? I suppose it’s difficult to get detail with it. Thank you again.
Thank you, I appreciate the kind feedback! I have used pastel Velour paper previously but I found that I wasn’t able to achieve the same sharpness that I can with PastelMat. I suppose it depends on your style of work, best thing to do would be to get a sample of both papers and see which you prefer best. It was many years before I used PastelMat because it’s expensive but I wouldn’t use any other paper now, I wish I started using it sooner 😊
excellent explanation . Very informative. I always learn something new in your videos, because you have a clarity o understanding hat you re teaching. Thank you or making videos that are really worthwhile.
