Thanks, Caitlin. My stepdad and I were my mom's in-home hospice caregiver for her last five days. We both had to change her and try to keep her pain under control as she went through the "active dying phase." A couple of days before she died, I thought "I can't do it. I can't wash and dress her after she dies." But then Sunday night came, and it was clear she was on her way out, mostly unresponsive, and not in pain. I picked out a cheery outfit for her, something I knew she liked. Early Monday morning, she died. My stepdad was, of course, a wreck. I knew what to expect and what I wanted to do. I knew she'd *just* died and so wanted to dress her before rigor mortis set in. So my stepdad helped me take off her hospital type clothes and held her up while I washed her body. He helped me get her dressed, too, but had to excuse himself because he was so upset and he didn't want to cry in front of anyone. Her eyes were open, her head was turned, and her mouth was open. So knowing time was short, I got lucky and managed to close her eyes and mouth. I turned her head so she looked like she was just lying there and crossed her legs so the one that was kind of bent looked normal. There was a thud when I turned her head, but I was expecting it because of your videos. I brushed her hair and put her favorite perfume powder on her. She looked great and I was proud I did it. I also had my stepdad open all the doors and windows as she was mostly Irish and I knew I was supposed to open everything so her spirit would find its way out. I also tried to tell the bees and trees but there were no bees. We did see two lovely yellow butterflies, though. So thank you for helping me not be freaked out when she died. I was able to be calm and death positive, and honor her body the way I felt she'd want - and definitely the way I wanted and hoped I'd have the strength to do.
A lovely tribute to your mom. I was with mine as she passed. Her last request was "don't let me meet my maker with a dirty bum" and of course I honored her request. I eventually put morphine in her nebulizer rather than having her have to wake up in pain. We'd discussed this in the weeks before, she was scared one of my sisters would freak out and call an ambulance. She waited until they ran to the store, kept control until the end. I hope your memories of better times help you through your grief. Best to you and your family.
You didn't mention how old you are. I'm very proud of how well you did! Your comment made me cry😢. My mom died in her sleep I was 46 but I really don't think I could have done as well as you did even if I was right there. I went to work & called her on my break & when she didn't answer, I told my boss I'm going home I think somethings wrong. I called my sister & she called the hospices who helped with my dad 20 years prior. Mom was perfectly healthy. Hospice lady came & helped. Thank You, you're a good daughter!❤
Like you’re telling me this entire cruise ship doesn’t have a single freezer? Maybe let go of a few ice creams in exchange people aren’t drinking decomposing body gas
You would think people involved with food service would understand that different refrigeration devices keep different temperatures. A freezer is not the same as a refrigerator is not the same as a chiller.
@@mzmi_a cooler is above freezing but below 41f a freezer is below freezing, less than 32f usually around 10f I believe. Or at least in food service. So they weren’t that far off by putting him in a cooler. Not saying they’re right!
@@rachelsiminski9717Water doesn't freeze until 32 degrees, and frozens should be ideally kept below 10. If your frozens were going up to 41, they were thawing and potentially unsafe
My dad died a couple weeks ago and watching your channel over the past few years has educated me enough to be comfortable with what was done with the body and knowing the general process. Thank you for being the comedic relief and voice of reason in the funeral industry. ❤

I worked in Funeral Service for three years, and like any other business, there were trade magazines with ads in the back. One of those ads was for morgue refrigerators. But they didn't call them "morgue refrigerators.". They called them "Bacterial Stablization Thermal Reduction Units". I couldn't help but laugh. So to this day, I call a refrigerator a Bacterial Stablization Thermal Reduction Unit.
I’m from Puerto Rico and let me tell you, she made the right choice by keeping his body on the ship. It’s a HUGE pain in the ass to transport the dead to and from Puerto Rico. It’s unfortunate that the cruise line didn’t take proper care.
It was a pain just transporting my uncle across a few states, we ended up just having him cremated and his son had to drive several hours to go get his ashes
I've lived in Cusco 6 years. I know people with mummies of their relatives in their homes. The mummies attend weddings, birthday parties, and other family events. No one finds it strange.

My grandpa died two weeks ago. I was there when it happened. He was cremated. I’ve seen all your videos, read all your books, and I think I can confidently said that you made the experience of death so much less scary for me. I got the chance to properly say goodbye, not being scared of the fresh body, not have nightmares of the whole process, not feel awkward handling the urn, even brushing away some stray ashes on the lid. You may not even see this, but thank you so much for helping me have a clear conscience about his passing, and letting me be prepared to face stressful moments with as much peace as one can during those hard times. Fascinating!! Support mummy!! 😂 There is a town in México where once a year you take your ancestors bones out of the tumb to clean them. On a Spanish-speaking TH-cam station called Furgo En Ruta, they were interviewing a man who was cleaning bones and one of the stories he told was of his teenage daughter who was fighting with him at the time, yelled at him "And when you're dead I'm not going to go and clean your bones!"😆

As long as the channel isn't how somebody makes their living they can do it that way. If it's the source of your income unfortunately the algorithm heavily favors regular uploads and all of those other BS that makes it very stressful and requires creators to pump stuff out continuously or they will lose their audience often permanently.

This has caused me to explore the back catalough of the "everyone's asking, no one's asking". I'm going to be honest I absolutly love the no one's asking section just because of how excited you are to present them. Both segments tend to be really informative and to me very interesting information, but you get so excited about the storys no one's asking for that I can't help but get excited too!

I hope you enjoy your sabbatical. One of my friends works on a cruse ship. She said that every once in a great while, the morgue will fill up. The ship will have to find a different place to store a body. She thinks thats what happened here. She did say that the cruse ship is responsible for the state of the body. They should have monitored the temperature of the temporary body storage location to make sure it was cold enough to store the body.

Another reason I just cannot take a cruise. Thanks to you, I helped wipe down the body of my husband after his death (from cancer). I helped dress him at the funeral home. It brought me peace and I thank you for that.
I am so sorry for your loss. My husband passed away August 30th last year (also from cancer) and I did the very same thing! Though we were having him cremated, I wanted to be sure he looked good and clean for his journey out of the house. Myself and the hospice nurse cleaned him and dressed him and it was incredibly meaningful. I would never have done that without watching these videos and reading Caitlin's books.
Pretty much any boat does that if they don’t have a dedicated morgue. Only very large ships do, space is at a premium. If the main morgue isn’t working for some reason, it’s the freezer for uncle Bob.
This is insane. My grandpa's best friend died while vacationing with us on a cruise and thankfully his body was respected. Unfortunately, people pass on cruises all the time.

Yes, I had taken 7 cruises so far and had the stomach flu on two of them. I watch my hygiene practices much closer now but I still will take cruise trips in the future.

Yeah. I would love to know how someone could make an 'honest mistake' like that when they have a morgue!! Like, was the morgue full? Was it malfunctioning so they needed to improvise? Was is some careless newb who was afraid to ask questions and was simply winging it? How do you go, "Oops! That's not the morgue, it's the drink cooler! Oh well, good enough!" and then call it a win?
The question I have is, was there something wrong with the morgue? Like, was it broken or out of room? The cooler was mishandled, no doubt about that. However, you are a floating hotel in the ocean with only the supplies you have on board. It's like having too many dead onboard a submarine and suddenly the crew has to eat ice cream like it's going out of style until they can bring the dead back home.

There's a bit of a "thing" in the UK where Saga cruises are nicknamed "Coffin Cruises". Saga is a company specialising in holidays for let's say, the "older" generation, so the nickname is probably well deserved, as apparently a per centage of their customers return home in coffins, having had their very last holiday with Saga.
I remember reading about older people who just spend their entire retirement just bopping around from one cruise to another fully expecting to die there.

Yeah those are pretty stupid comments. People can die anywhere at any time. It can be from natural causes, m*rder or a freaky accident. If Final Destination has taught us anything, is that we are not actually safe anywhere. That's why we should just enjoy the ride while it lasts.

You should look into the crisis Puerto Rico is facing with the funeral industry. Some people wait months for autopsies or to even bury their loved ones. Popular news sources there are, el Nuevo día, el vocero, and primera hora.
So glad you are back… I worked on cruise ships for 25 years, normally a mid to large ship would have two or three refrigerated drawers as you would find in a morgue. But there was a secret communication between staff members when a passenger had died. The waiters or people working in the galley would say “the ice cream is a bit soft today “… Implying that the ice cream freezer had been used for another purpose. In the end, the ship has large refrigerated rooms that would be perfectly fit to store a body until it could be delivered to the proper authorities. That is, a ship that didn’t have the refrigerated more drawers that most of them do today
Yes! I worked on a Disney cruise and we had an elderly man pass away during a performance. He was stored in one of the ice cream drawers! It became a macabre joke for the rest of my cruise career.
I was told by a former cruise ship employee that this is quite common, an average of four people dying per cruise. They have a morgue but if more than the expected amount of people die, they store bodies in coolers or freezers. And that if a cruise ship suddenly is giving out free ice cream of beverages its because they need space.

Served in the US Navy. When there is a death that happens out at sea, bodies are kept in food refrigerated area. One was kept there before I arrived to my first ship. When it pulled into port, I reported for duty and the body respectfully taken into the city for transport.
@@kathrynparker9790but clearly some of Celebrity Cruises' ships do have morgues on board, and the staff told the family that the options were in that morgue or get off the boat. They lied (for whatever reason) about what they did with the body for those days. Maybe they have a morgue and it wasn't working, but then they should have told the family as soon as that was realised and given them the option of getting off at the port to get the body properly dealt with. It's pretty simple - don't let people believe their recently deceased loved one is being properly taken care of in a morgue for 6 days *if you don't have a fully functioning morgue!*

Caitlin, your channel brought me the strength and way of thinking to survive the loss of my son last year. It was the hardest thing ever, but I'm still here. As for his funeral, I couldn't have that due to the mishandling of his body as it went to or came back from autopsy 2 counties away. It was so decomposed, the smell wouldn't have been able to be masked. Due to this video, I may look into a lawsuit. Thank you.
It's so nice when a company compounds somebody's grief. I completely understand their original offer for the man's body to be kept on board, but they needed to acknowledge their situation wasn't acceptable and to find a solution that meant that the body didn’t decompose.
Okay what solution? You're so smart what was the solution they should have used? I mean I'm going to assume they used the best solution they had. What do you people expect them to do when someone dies on board? Clearly you don't want them to throw the body overboard. It's not like cruise ships have morgs. You would feel just “mildly inconvenienced” if you found out your loved one had decomposed in a drink cooler that wasn’t cold enough? Not to mention it was a drink cooler for the cruise!! Just “mildly inconvenienced” now that your loved one is green and decayed and cannot have an open casket funeral? I get that having an open casket funeral isn’t a big deal for everyone but for some people that is something extremely important to them. You would be ok with not being able to look at your loved one again because the cruise decided a drink cooler was sufficient to store a body for 6 days? The cruise took that right away from the family. Yes, I consider that a catastrophe.
As an oncology RN, I've had to take bodies to the hospital morgue. This is typically 36-39 F but a soda fridge is typically 38-42 F, which I know as I previously owned 6 cafés. Also, a body starts to decompose at the cellular level the moment he/she/they are dead. If a body has to be kept for a week then it needs to be embalmed immediately. As RNs, we had to get the body to the morgue asap, which was sometimes difficult when the family wanted to spend hours with their deceased loved one. Of course they would. Only human. But, the hospital would not allow a deceased person to remain in a room for longer than 12 hours. Things get real when you're a nurse. At the 6 hour mark (or earlier) I'd call our Chaplin service. They helped the families so much but also helped them understand that we could not keep their deceased in the room (at room temperature). It was always painful for the nurses when a patient died, but our duty to them extended to their families, and did not end when they died.
I had a problem at one hospital I worked at with people stealing my lunch out of the employee fridge. I made friends with the Pathology staff in the morgue, and they were fine with me leaving my lunch with them in the cooler.
Nurses are amazing. I was with my grandpa when he died. I went out to tell the nurses and when they came in, I was taken aback. They had to close his mouth and move him and they talked to him and called him by name as they did each thing..I’ll never ever forget the respect and consideration they showed in that moment. Ever.
My husband was a medical officer in holland America cruises for 5 years. They keep the body in the flower cooler. They don’t keep it in the food or beverage cooler. Bodies are always taken off at the first port possible.

I helped care for my great aunt (elderly woman with dementia) and in part because of these videos I was able to be comfortable enough to pray by her deathbed (she died a couple days ago). I know you're not religious, but I was really glad I was able to do that. Thanks for what you do.

I did the "behind the fun" tour of a Carnival ship in 2016, a tour worth taking (sign up at embarkation day as it fills fast) and onboard that ship was a 2 drawer morgue, they showed us the drawers you see in videos involving a morgue.

Fun fact about me.. growing up we always had pets. When one died and it was winter or the ground hadn't thawed yet.. where did we put the dead pets?...in our deep freezer in the garage. They were wrapped up and sealed until the ground would thaw when we could bury them. Did we also keep frozen peas and random food items in same said freezer? Sure did.
Many people do that too! I did, and I'm sure that 100s of thousands of others also have. Nothing wrong with it if it's your own fridge and your own pet.
Most elderly live on cruise ships for their twilight years. They're cheaper than nursing homes but have almost all the same amenities. Even a full mini hospital on most ships. No surgery, but they can stabilize until helicopter ambulance pick up and deal with anything not er worthy, easily. Plus if you're a single older gentleman some ships will pay you to cruise with them to keep the plethora of widows busy. Women live longer statistically and packs of granny's can get out of hand😂 they need single gents the right age to be guest liaisons. Keep the ladies feeling lovely. 🎉
Going on my 8th cruise next week. I’ve never gotten sick. My last cruise was last May on this exact ship. Yes Kate McCue is a celebrity cruise ship, captain, but not on the equinox.
I work in Psych, and we have written letters for “Emotional Support” dogs, cats, chinchillas, turtles, goats, donkeys. But “Emotional Support Corpse” would be a new one for me! Hope your sabbatical is refreshing and everything you needed Ms. Caitlin!
It's almost like having a private catholic saint to pray to. Not for everyone, but the few people who do it here in south america take it as a serious religious adoption and caretaking of the remains.
In the no one's asking case I feel like the family should have been financially compensated since the relationship the people in that area have with the dead and mummies is something closer to a family member than an artifact.....
The cruise ships absolutely store the dead in the coolers if the morgue is full. My friend worked for a cruise line and told me that if they announced there was to be an ice cream party/social then it was because they needed the room. He told me so many horror stories about the cruise lines that I will NEVER cruise. I feel sick when I see the ads for them!
I don’t believe you and only because you are one of MANY people I have seen post within the last week, claiming to have a friend that works in the industry and has revealed that so many people die on board that the morgue gets filled up to the point they have to use the ice cream freezer. It’s just amazing to me that before last week, nobody ever said anything like this about cruise lines but all of a sudden it’s all anyone talks about. Just seems fishy to me is all.
@@charlottethomsen8076 I don't think I'd heard that cruise ships morgues get so full, they have to resort to using other freezers, but I definitely knew about cruise ships having morgues. The cruise ship industry has catered to the elderly for many decades now and there's a pretty high chance that any of those ppl could die at any moment simply from one of their many health problems (at that age, it's a question of what gets you first). Add in certain infectious diseases making the rounds, ppl refusing vaccinations, and ppl refusing to wear masks when they know they're sick (or stay in their cabins) and a higher than expected number of deaths on a cruise is very possible. Then if you look at exactly which segment of the population is more likely to engage in the above behaviors? Yeah, there most likely is a higher than average number of elderly people dying on cruise ships these days. Edit: I should add that part of the problem here is that the dead body was _not_ put in a freezer, but rather a walk-in refrigerator (which was not kept cold enough). If they had stored the body in a freezer (as all of the comments you've seen cited), I have a feeling this might not have made the news and there wouldn't be a lawsuit. Or at least, it would be much more difficult to bring a lawsuit as the body still would have been stored in a freezer that was cold enough to preserve the body. So yeah, I doubt there was an ice cream social/party announced on this ship seeing as the ice cream wouldn't have been stored in that cooler.

I served in the US Navy on a submarine years ago. If we happened to have an onboard casualty, the remains went into the freezer with the pork chops and the beef roasts. Medically, it's not a big deal although some may be uneasy about the idea.
@@hokutoulrik7345 That's not how submarines operate. Tenders generally stay in port. Depending on the mission, a submarine does not return to port except in an extreme emergency. If nothing else, they will have a burial at sea.
My grandpa just died a few days ago and I thank you for your invaluable education, candor, and respectful humor about death and dying. It’s been hard but I know it would’ve been harder without having seen your videos. It was the first time I’d seen a dead body… nothing really prepares you for it, but it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. He will be cremated soon.

My grandmothers passed a few months ago and thanks to your videos I had a beatiful experience saying good bye. My parents were not ready to deal with the body, I could get close to her and talk to her about the journey she was going on. Move her arms, fingers and mouth before rigor mortis so she wouldnt have them in an awkward position, and clean her face. It felt very personal and I know she was thankful for it.
This has become my comfort channel. My best friend since childhood introduced me to this channel during one of my visits. We would watch these videos while drawing or playing games. She passed away on April 6th to Leukmia Cancer. She was only 22. This is my first time being truly affected by death and loss. But I take comfort that death was never something she feared; so I hope that gave her peace in her last moments.
I applaud your intuitive work style. It shows you're not in this for the money, but for the craft and pride in a piece well done. Inspiration drives creativity; producing your works like a battery hen saps your natural energy and makes you tired of what you love. You get stuck in a rut...and as I've heard, a rut is just a grave with both ends kicked out.
You know, the idea of finding old medical teaching skulls and giving them honor and identities is so sweet? Like those people may have been people of color or even slaves whose bodies were sold after death. Having someone find you and honor you after that sounds comforting.
admittedly im an australian whos never heard of this practice before, but it strikes me as odd and potentially disrespectful. if i died and my remains were going to be kept as relics, i'd want whoever was keeping them to know who _i_ was, not project a completely new character onto my skull while my real identity is lost to time

The part that bothered me, was the word girlfriend specifically. Saying you’re in any kind of romantic or sexual relationship feels different than just like, sponsoring, or whatever else. Bigger consent issue there for me.

Hi Caitlin, I just wanted to say that your videos have been a huge help to me. A couple of years ago I ended up losing 4 close family members within the span of 18ish months and it broke me. I couldn't process the grief and ended up on disability. Your relaxed but respectful attitude towards death really helped me along my journey to recovery. So glad you did the “no one’s asking” mummy dive. I do remember that story when it first came out. Completely fascinating! I also find the idea of Emotional Support Mummies far less offensive then the little untrained pocket dogs people drag around attempting to claim they are actually official Service Animals. At least Juan/Juanita isn’t pottying on the grocery store floor or trying to bite you as you pass in the aisleway.
I recently started thinking, “Maybe cruise ships aren’t that bad. Maybe I should try one.” You just solidified my original thoughts that I do not want to go on a cruise ship. Not because of the poorly managed makeshift morgue, but because of the stuff you added at the end of the video. 😬
Going on my 8th cruise next week, never been sick. Never had any bad incidents it’s the best vacation you can take especially on Celebrity. It’s completely luxurious and the food is unbelievable!! Plus less kids then royal Caribbean or carnival 😊

Love the video! For everyone's asking-- this is old news but I'd be very interested in your take on the 1999 and 2001 expeditions to find Mallory and Irvine's bodies on Everest. They're complicated because a) it's been 100 years, so at what point does the memory of these people transfer to the mountaineering community? And b) one family approves but the other doesn't.

Let me add, and I hope you see this on your sabbatical - I live in a very rural area in Western Scotland, and as we are running out of cemetary space, there has been discussion of doing water cremation here. Thanks, Caitlin. My stepdad and I were my mom's in-home hospice caregiver for her last five days. We both had to change her and try to keep her pain under control as she went through the "active dying phase." A couple of days before she died, I thought "I can't do it. I can't wash and dress her after she dies." But then Sunday night came, and it was clear she was on her way out, mostly unresponsive, and not in pain. I picked out a cheery outfit for her, something I knew she liked. Early Monday morning, she died. My stepdad was, of course, a wreck. I knew what to expect and what I wanted to do. I knew she'd *just* died and so wanted to dress her before rigor mortis set in. So my stepdad helped me take off her hospital type clothes and held her up while I washed her body. He helped me get her dressed, too, but had to excuse himself because he was so upset and he didn't want to cry in front of anyone.
Her eyes were open, her head was turned, and her mouth was open. So knowing time was short, I got lucky and managed to close her eyes and mouth. I turned her head so she looked like she was just lying there and crossed her legs so the one that was kind of bent looked normal. There was a thud when I turned her head, but I was expecting it because of your videos. I brushed her hair and put her favorite perfume powder on her. She looked great and I was proud I did it. I also had my stepdad open all the doors and windows as she was mostly Irish and I knew I was supposed to open everything so her spirit would find its way out. I also tried to tell the bees and trees but there were no bees. We did see two lovely yellow butterflies, though.
So thank you for helping me not be freaked out when she died. I was able to be calm and death positive, and honor her body the way I felt she'd want - and definitely the way I wanted and hoped I'd have the strength to do.
A lovely tribute to your mom. I was with mine as she passed. Her last request was "don't let me meet my maker with a dirty bum" and of course I honored her request. I eventually put morphine in her nebulizer rather than having her have to wake up in pain. We'd discussed this in the weeks before, she was scared one of my sisters would freak out and call an ambulance. She waited until they ran to the store, kept control until the end. I hope your memories of better times help you through your grief. Best to you and your family.

You didn't mention how old you are. I'm very proud of how well you did! Your comment made me cry😢. My mom died in her sleep I was 46 but I really don't think I could have done as well as you did even if I was right there. I went to work & called her on my break & when she didn't answer, I told my boss I'm going home I think somethings wrong. I called my sister & she called the hospices who helped with my dad 20 years prior. Mom was perfectly healthy. Hospice lady came & helped. Thank You, you're a good daughter!❤

You would think people involved with food service would understand that different refrigeration devices keep different temperatures. A freezer is not the same as a refrigerator is not the same as a chiller.
@@mzmi_a cooler is above freezing but below 41f a freezer is below freezing, less than 32f usually around 10f I believe. Or at least in food service. So they weren’t that far off by putting him in a cooler. Not saying they’re right!

I worked in Funeral Service for three years, and like any other business, there were trade magazines with ads in the back. One of those ads was for morgue refrigerators. But they didn't call them "morgue refrigerators.". They called them "Bacterial Stablization Thermal Reduction Units". I couldn't help but laugh. So to this day, I call a refrigerator a Bacterial Stablization Thermal Reduction Unit.

I’m from Puerto Rico and let me tell you, she made the right choice by keeping his body on the ship. It’s a HUGE pain in the ass to transport the dead to and from Puerto Rico. It’s unfortunate that the cruise line didn’t take proper care.
It was a pain just transporting my uncle across a few states, we ended up just having him cremated and his son had to drive several hours to go get his ashes
I've lived in Cusco 6 years. I know people with mummies of their relatives in their homes. The mummies attend weddings, birthday parties, and other family events. No one finds it strange.

My grandpa died two weeks ago. I was there when it happened. He was cremated. I’ve seen all your videos, read all your books, and I think I can confidently said that you made the experience of death so much less scary for me.
I got the chance to properly say goodbye, not being scared of the fresh body, not have nightmares of the whole process, not feel awkward handling the urn, even brushing away some stray ashes on the lid. You may not even see this, but thank you so much for helping me have a clear conscience about his passing, and letting me be prepared to face stressful moments with as much peace as one can during those hard times. Fascinating!! Support mummy!! 😂 There is a town in México where once a year you take your ancestors bones out of the tumb to clean them. On a Spanish-speaking TH-cam station called Furgo En Ruta, they were interviewing a man who was cleaning bones and one of the stories he told was of his teenage daughter who was fighting with him at the time, yelled at him "And when you're dead I'm not going to go and clean your bones!"😆

As long as the channel isn't how somebody makes their living they can do it that way. If it's the source of your income unfortunately the algorithm heavily favors regular uploads and all of those other BS that makes it very stressful and requires creators to pump stuff out continuously or they will lose their audience often permanently.

I'm going to be honest I absolutly love the no one's asking section just because of how excited you are to present them. I hope you enjoy your sabbatical. One of my friends works on a cruse ship. She said that every once in a great while, the morgue will fill up. The ship will have to find a different place to store a body. She thinks thats what happened here. She did say that the cruse ship is responsible for the state of the body. They should have monitored the temperature of the temporary body storage location to make sure it was cold enough to store the body.
According to the lawsuit, the morgue was not working and Celebrity failed to inform the wife so she could factor that in her decision.
@@CharleneCTXI’m commenting two months later but I agree the information aspect of it is the most important part of this. If Mrs Jones knew that her husband’s body were going to a cooler and not a morgue maybe she would choose the other option.

Thanks to you, I helped wipe down the body of my husband after his death (from cancer). I helped dress him at the funeral home. It brought me peace and I thank you for that.
I am so sorry for your loss. My husband passed away August 30th last year (also from cancer) and I did the very same thing! Though we were having him cremated, I wanted to be sure he looked good and clean for his journey out of the house. Myself and the hospice nurse cleaned him and dressed him and it was incredibly meaningful. I would never have done that without watching these videos and reading Caitlin's books.

Pretty much any boat does that if they don’t have a dedicated morgue. Only very large ships do, space is at a premium. If the main morgue isn’t working for some reason, it’s the freezer for uncle Bob.

The question I have is, was there something wrong with the morgue? Like, was it broken or out of room? The cooler was mishandled, no doubt about that. However, you are a floating hotel in the ocean with only the supplies you have on board. It's like having too many dead onboard a submarine and suddenly the crew has to eat ice cream like it's going out of style until they can bring the dead back home.

There's a bit of a "thing" in the UK where Saga cruises are nicknamed "Coffin Cruises". Saga is a company specialising in holidays for let's say, the "older" generation, so the nickname is probably well deserved, as apparently a per centage of their customers return home in coffins, having had their very last holiday with Saga.

You should look into the crisis Puerto Rico is facing with the funeral industry. Some people wait months for autopsies or to even bury their loved ones. Popular news sources there are, el Nuevo día, el vocero, and primera hora.

I worked on cruise ships for 25 years, normally a mid to large ship would have two or three refrigerated drawers as you would find in a morgue.
But there was a secret communication between staff members when a passenger had died. The waiters or people working in the galley would say “the ice cream is a bit soft today “… Implying that the ice cream freezer had been used for another purpose.
In the end, the ship has large refrigerated rooms that would be perfectly fit to store a body until it could be delivered to the proper authorities. That is, a ship that didn’t have the refrigerated more drawers that most of them do today
Yes! I worked on a Disney cruise and we had an elderly man pass away during a performance. He was stored in one of the ice cream drawers! It became a macabre joke for the rest of my cruise career.
I was told by a former cruise ship employee that this is quite common, an average of four people dying per cruise. They have a morgue but if more than the expected amount of people die, they store bodies in coolers or freezers. And that if a cruise ship suddenly is giving out free ice cream of beverages its because they need space.
I worked out to sea our cruise ships for 25 years.

Served in the US Navy. When there is a death that happens out at sea, bodies are kept in food refrigerated area. One was kept there before I arrived to my first ship. When it pulled into port, I reported for duty and the body respectfully taken into the city for transport.
That was my experience in the Navy as well
@@kathrynparker9790but clearly some of Celebrity Cruises' ships do have morgues on board, and the staff told the family that the options were in that morgue or get off the boat. They lied (for whatever reason) about what they did with the body for those days. Maybe they have a morgue and it wasn't working, but then they should have told the family as soon as that was realised and given them the option of getting off at the port to get the body properly dealt with.
It's pretty simple - don't let people believe their recently deceased loved one is being properly taken care of in a morgue for 6 days *if you don't have a fully functioning morgue!*
I hope those are dedicated refrigerators rather than interchangeably used for food storage depending on the situation?

Caitlin, your channel brought me the strength and way of thinking to survive the loss of my son last year. It was the hardest thing ever, but I'm still here.
As for his funeral, I couldn't have that due to the mishandling of his body as it went to or came back from autopsy 2 counties away. It was so decomposed, the smell wouldn't have been able to be masked. Due to this video, I may look into a lawsuit. Thank you.

It's so nice when a company compounds somebody's grief. I completely understand their original offer for the man's body to be kept on board, but they needed to acknowledge their situation wasn't acceptable and to find a solution that meant that the body didn’t decompose.

I get that having an open casket funeral isn’t a big deal for everyone but for some people that is something extremely important to them. You would be ok with not being able to look at your loved one again because the cruise decided a drink cooler was sufficient to store a body for 6 days? The cruise took that right away from the family. Yes, I consider that a catastrophe.
As an oncology RN, I've had to take bodies to the hospital morgue. This is typically 36-39 F but a soda fridge is typically 38-42 F, which I know as I previously owned 6 cafés. Also, a body starts to decompose at the cellular level the moment he/she/they are dead. If a body has to be kept for a week then it needs to be embalmed immediately. As RNs, we had to get the body to the morgue asap, which was sometimes difficult when the family wanted to spend hours with their deceased loved one. Of course they would. Only human. But, the hospital would not allow a deceased person to remain in a room for longer than 12 hours. Things get real when you're a nurse. At the 6 hour mark (or earlier) I'd call our Chaplin service. They helped the families so much but also helped them understand that we could not keep their deceased in the room (at room temperature). It was always painful for the nurses when a patient died, but our duty to them extended to their families, and did not end when they died.
I had a problem at one hospital I worked at with people stealing my lunch out of the employee fridge.
I made friends with the Pathology staff in the morgue, and they were fine with me leaving my lunch with them in the cooler.
Nurses are amazing. I was with my grandpa when he died. I went out to tell the nurses and when they came in, I was taken aback. They had to close his mouth and move him and they talked to him and called him by name as they did each thing..I’ll never ever forget the respect and consideration they showed in that moment. Ever.

My husband was a medical officer in holland America cruises for 5 years. They keep the body in the flower cooler. They don’t keep it in the food or beverage cooler.
Bodies are always taken off at the first port possible.
I have missed you Caitlin, I love you….Please come back…..Actually I’m a 71 year old fellow and you have helped to prepare me for a not too far off event in my life. Last part of my life. Anyway, thanks for all you have done to pull the curtain back to our last act, ps. I really do love you🥰
I helped care for my great aunt (elderly woman with dementia) and in part because of these videos I was able to be comfortable enough to pray by her deathbed (she died a couple days ago). I know you're not religious, but I was really glad I was able to do that. Thanks for what you do.
I just wanted to comment thank you. Last year I lost four family members, two of which were my parents. Your videos helped me make decisions for their burials. I’m excited to see you back from sabbatical.
So sorry that you had to go through that. I lost one parent 10 weeks ago and it's been so hard. I hope you're doing ok.

I did the "behind the fun" tour of a Carnival ship in 2016, a tour worth taking (sign up at embarkation day as it fills fast) and onboard that ship was a 2 drawer morgue, they showed us the drawers you see in videos involving a morgue.

Fun fact about me.. growing up we always had pets. When one died and it was winter or the ground hadn't thawed yet.. where did we put the dead pets?...in our deep freezer in the garage. They were wrapped up and sealed until the ground would thaw when we could bury them. Did we also keep frozen peas and random food items in same said freezer? Sure did.
Many people do that too! I did, and I'm sure that 100s of thousands of others also have. Nothing wrong with it if it's your own fridge and your own pet.

Plague ships should be respected
Most elderly live on cruise ships for their twilight years. They're cheaper than nursing homes but have almost all the same amenities. Even a full mini hospital on most ships. No surgery, but they can stabilize until helicopter ambulance pick up and deal with anything not er worthy, easily. Plus if you're a single older gentleman some ships will pay you to cruise with them to keep the plethora of widows busy. Women live longer statistically and packs of granny's can get out of hand😂 they need single gents the right age to be guest liaisons. Keep the ladies feeling lovely. 🎉
Going on my 8th cruise next week. I’ve never gotten sick. My last cruise was last May on this exact ship. Yes Kate McCue is a celebrity cruise ship, captain, but not on the equinox.

I work in Psych, and we have written letters for “Emotional Support” dogs, cats, chinchillas, turtles, goats, donkeys. But “Emotional Support Corpse” would be a new one for me! Hope your sabbatical is refreshing and everything you needed Ms. Caitlin!
It's almost like having a private catholic saint to pray to. Not for everyone, but the few people who do it here in south america take it as a serious religious adoption and caretaking of the remains.
In the no one's asking case I feel like the family should have been financially compensated since the relationship the people in that area have with the dead and mummies is something closer to a family member than an artifact.....
I love this woman. How does she keep such an upbeat happy vibe during these stories? She is so captivating and I can’t stop listening to her.
The cruise ships absolutely store the dead in the coolers if the morgue is full. My friend worked for a cruise line and told me that if they announced there was to be an ice cream party/social then it was because they needed the room. He told me so many horror stories about the cruise lines that I will NEVER cruise. I feel sick when I see the ads for them!

I don’t believe you and only because you are one of MANY people I have seen post within the last week, claiming to have a friend that works in the industry and has revealed that so many people die on board that the morgue gets filled up to the point they have to use the ice cream freezer. It’s just amazing to me that before last week, nobody ever said anything like this about cruise lines but all of a sudden it’s all anyone talks about. Just seems fishy to me is all.
@@charlottethomsen8076 I don't think I'd heard that cruise ships morgues get so full, they have to resort to using other freezers, but I definitely knew about cruise ships having morgues. The cruise ship industry has catered to the elderly for many decades now and there's a pretty high chance that any of those ppl could die at any moment simply from one of their many health problems (at that age, it's a question of what gets you first).
Add in certain infectious diseases making the rounds, ppl refusing vaccinations, and ppl refusing to wear masks when they know they're sick (or stay in their cabins) and a higher than expected number of deaths on a cruise is very possible. Then if you look at exactly which segment of the population is more likely to engage in the above behaviors? Yeah, there most likely is a higher than average number of elderly people dying on cruise ships these days.
Edit: I should add that part of the problem here is that the dead body was _not_ put in a freezer, but rather a walk-in refrigerator (which was not kept cold enough). If they had stored the body in a freezer (as all of the comments you've seen cited), I have a feeling this might not have made the news and there wouldn't be a lawsuit. Or at least, it would be much more difficult to bring a lawsuit as the body still would have been stored in a freezer that was cold enough to preserve the body.
So yeah, I doubt there was an ice cream social/party announced on this ship seeing as the ice cream wouldn't have been stored in that cooler.

How would the morgue fill up??? How many people die on cruises?
I served in the US Navy on a submarine years ago. If we happened to have an onboard casualty, the remains went into the freezer with the pork chops and the beef roasts. Medically, it's not a big deal although some may be uneasy about the idea.
And you probably wouldn't have them in there for very long. Either return to port or meeting up with a tender.
@@hokutoulrik7345 That's not how submarines operate. Tenders generally stay in port. Depending on the mission, a submarine does not return to port except in an extreme emergency. If nothing else, they will have a burial at sea.

It’s been hard but I know it would’ve been harder without having seen your videos. It was the first time I’d seen a dead body… nothing really prepares you for it, but it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. He will be cremated soon.
Oh my goodness, I remember the story of ‘Juanita’. I forgot all about it. It shocked me. I lived in Peru for a while, so I’m keen on hearing Caitlin’s opinion on it. Thank you for covering!
My grandmothers passed a few months ago and thanks to your videos I had a beatiful experience saying good bye. My parents were not ready to deal with the body, I could get close to her and talk to her about the journey she was going on. Move her arms, fingers and mouth before rigor mortis so she wouldnt have them in an awkward position, and clean her face. It felt very personal and I know she was thankful for it.
I lost my mom in April and then my Dad in August. Thank you for your content. I had to make some hard decisions ,and you helped me through it.

This has become my comfort channel. My best friend since childhood introduced me to this channel during one of my visits. We would watch these videos while drawing or playing games.
She passed away on April 6th to Leukmia Cancer. She was only 22. This is my first time being truly affected by death and loss. But I take comfort that death was never something she feared; so I hope that gave her peace in her last moments.
I applaud your intuitive work style. It shows you're not in this for the money, but for the craft and pride in a piece well done. Inspiration drives creativity; producing your works like a battery hen saps your natural energy and makes you tired of what you love. You get stuck in a rut...and as I've heard, a rut is just a grave with both ends kicked out.
You know, the idea of finding old medical teaching skulls and giving them honor and identities is so sweet? Like those people may have been people of color or even slaves whose bodies were sold after death. Having someone find you and honor you after that sounds comforting.
admittedly im an australian whos never heard of this practice before, but it strikes me as odd and potentially disrespectful. if i died and my remains were going to be kept as relics, i'd want whoever was keeping them to know who _i_ was, not project a completely new character onto my skull while my real identity is lost to time

You’d be surprised this actually happened a lot on ocean liners when there wasn’t an at sea burial. I remember hearing one story where they started giving out free ice cream on a ship to make room in the freezer

Hi Caitlin, I just wanted to say that your videos have been a huge help to me. A couple of years ago I ended up losing 4 close family members within the span of 18ish months and it broke me. I couldn't process the grief and ended up on disability.

So glad you did the “no one’s asking” mummy dive. I do remember that story when it first came out. Completely fascinating! I also find the idea of Emotional Support Mummies far less offensive then the little untrained pocket dogs people drag around attempting to claim they are actually official Service Animals. At least Juan/Juanita isn’t pottying on the grocery store floor or trying to bite you as you pass in the aisleway.

Going on my 8th cruise next week, never been sick. Never had any bad incidents it’s the best vacation you can take especially on Celebrity. It’s completely luxurious and the food is unbelievable!! Plus less kids then royal Caribbean or carnival 😊

Love the video! For everyone's asking-- this is old news but I'd be very interested in your take on the 1999 and 2001 expeditions to find Mallory and Irvine's bodies on Everest. They're complicated because a) it's been 100 years, so at what point does the memory of these people transfer to the mountaineering community? And b) one family approves but the other doesn't.
