As a refinement to the non-slip base technique, you can squirt the hot glue onto the bottom of your workpiece then press it onto a sheet of non-stick baking paper on a flat surface to spread the glue. This also works great to stabilise a wobbly base that has warped

DM Scotty, I hope you realize how much you've influenced the table-top gaming community. Spectacular results with inexpensive materials. I've got an addition which further helps with weight. Glue 3 sides of the cardboard and sand first, then let dry. Before gluing the final side (leave the long side or the 'open' side) fill it with the sand then seal it as normal. You get a heavier piece like weighted chess pieces. Hope that helps add more to an already great piece! Thanks

How about filling the corrogated cardboard with the Sand, before applying the second side of glue? Would be heavier ^^

Here is a small tip for taking off the outer paper layer of some foam core board: heat it a bit with a hot air gun (be carefull of the fumes)
Brilliant! I think these will more likely be used for my wargaming terrain, but you shouldn't mind that--crafting is flexible and you make it happen! :D

Very cool! Years ago, when my older brother ran his games, he used my plastiline modeling clay to roll out the lengths for his walls. I like this method for dungeon design and will definitely use it for mine.

Nice tutorial. It struck me that if you sealed three sides of the cardboard and let it dry, you could pour the sand *into* the corrugation, then seal it, to give it even more weight.

I've had problems with my corrugation being to large and the sand just falling through. I am going to add paper to the edge to be my glue surface.
Nice mod...some cardboard has larger corrugations.
Hey theDMsCraft - fantastic video! Thank you! I found you through the Crooked Staff, so I haven't seen everything. Just started with 2.5D Next videos. The paint you use here - what kind of paint should I be using? Sorry for the simple question; please keep up the good work and much appreciated!
Glad to help. I base spray my stuff with the cheapest flat black spray I can find. Make sure any foam is covered with a coat of glue as spray can melt foam. The other colors are just cheap acrylic craft paints.
Could the foam board be used for the floor mats?
In this, craftingwise 3rd. world country, I can only find foamcore with hard sides, almost like thin cardboard sides. Any tip on how to peel off a side of that?

DM Scotty, I bought some 3ft length pieces of wood (1/4 x 1/4) and (1/8 x 1/8) from my local hobby store for fairly cheap. I cut them to several desired lengths to represent walls. After that I spray painted each piece base black and followed it up with a spackled gray paint (texture). I'm now wondering if I should add detail for "brick style" as you did with the foam. Since it's real wood I'm not sure how to do that. The gray spackled look is "ok"....but not as detailed for a stone wall texture as I'd like. Any recommendation as to "next step" to improving them ?

I know this is a year old comment but for others looking, a dremel would be the easiest for adding details to wood for this. Using a cutting wheel and tracing over lines lengthwise and a cutting bit for the shorter lines.
What sort of tool do you use to cut your cardboard so that it has such a clean edge? it seems to be a place where i am having trouble.
Suede Wheeler Use a sharp box cutter and change blades as often as needed.
Tried these myself. Spray paint messed them all up, even with the glue covering. Think I might try it just with hand painting unless you have another idea maybe?
Sorry to hear that. You can hand paint them with black acrylic craft paint and you will not have the same problem.
That was my thought as well. It will just take longer. Anyway thanks for the videos. I hope to get this grid system implemented in my campaign soon!

Scotty you are the best, but Im a little confused. Is this still your recommended method?
Why not just the cardboard plus the gray textured stone spray from the other videos? I know those were just hot glued to the floors vs these being moveable. Is the sand for weight only? Or texture only?
Showing alternate ways of doing things. These can be more modular. The sand is good for bothweight and texture.
@@theDMsCraft I see that now. I wasn't noticing that you had a 2.5D and 2.5D Next going on. I can see that the flat battlemat type of terrain with moveable walls would travel much easier. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any points or weakness you later found with the original cardboard designs. I currently don't travel to game and really like that option.

Hey where did you get that thick tight corrugated cardboard? and how do you cut them so straight and neat?
A lot of furniture comes in this type of box...a lil' dumpster diving can get all you need. A metal straight edge can really help you cut them straight.
What like a T-Square and an X-acto knife? is that what you mean?
You can get rulers that are metal and these are good for cutting. A Xacto could work but I just used a box cutter retractable knife.

why not just use cheap isolation thick foam or simple box foam ?
Always an option, I wanted weight to the walls to keep them from sliding around. Also easier for people without foam cutting tools.
Could I make the walls higher? Instead of two corrugated cardboard high, can I try three or four corrugated cardboard high? Would that make the walls unbalanced?

So I have made a few walls, how long does it usually take for yours to dry? and how much glue do you use? The sand on mine is clumpy; maybe I used to much glue.
I filled the corrugations with glue...dipd them in the sand and then scrape off any access.
Thanks, did you fill the corrugation completely full with glue? like to the point, it comes out the other side, or just enough to dip it in the sand. Because I filled it pretty full with glue.
Just enough to fill the holes...not all the way through...remember it is better to go with less because if you miss some spots it is easier to go back and fill.

Try searching for foamecore or foambaord.

For this system, do you still recommenced the rustoleum stone textured spray paint method over hand painting with the sponge as seen here?
Popeye Ferby You can still use the texture paint. make sure to cover foam board with a acrylic paint or white glue first or the foam board will melt.
