This episode I share with you my eureka! project. Dungeon Stackers are an incredibly versatile stair system for tabletop gaming. They can be used for many purposes other than just stairs.

A lot of comments about weights and magnets. Ya'll have a crazy magnet fetish and want to put them in EVERY project. I think adding weights could be useful, hidden between layers, however this COULD cause them to have a center of gravity that's not ideal when doing certain builds. As for magnets, in theory this would be useful, but unless they are perfectly placed it could cause issues with pieces "snapping" into place in ways you don't want and could drastically remove some of the versatility that make these great. There is also the issue of polarity. And personally I think having magnets would ruin the look. Having played around with my set a fair bit I havn't found the weight to be an issue, and they interlock in a way that makes magnets unnecessary in my opinion.
If you really want weight or magnets in yours I'd suggest doing a bunch of test pieces first and really playing around with them before building a whole set.
Black Magic Craft I bought some tiny neodymium magnets to try and I thought that if not for making the pieces stack better, which is questionable, that maybe they could be used sparingly for helping other things like furniture and props sit still. Will post some results later.
SwampCritter I inadvertently ended up doing just that. But until I read your comment just now, I didn't realize it. I do have to maybe measure it out and make it a little more even, but it works great.
Could you use them for chapel pews?
Black Magic Craft do you have any tips to keep them stationary on the table? I have a bunch I made, and they look great, but I can’t seem to keep them from shifting and sliding on the table.

I’ve actually don’t that, a round dungeon that was a series of spinning discs that changed constantly making different rooms line up with each other. It was really complicated to run .

Not gonna lie, at first I was kinda like "meh" to the idea, but once I saw the finished product around 2:02, I was sold. They look and work amazing. Might not be a bad idea to add some weights to them.

That sounds like a great idea! You'd have to be mindful of where you place them though, so that they don't get annoying when trying to build complex structures.

I’ve started making some of these, I don’t have a hot wire cutter but a good ole sharp knife is working just fine, just take your time with your cuts.
I also only have 1 inch thick foam so I am cutting a 2x3 piece and splitting it down the middle. I’ve had a few pieces that have ended up in the rubble pile but I’m learning and they’re turning out great.

DAMN!! These are so amazing. I have really been wanting a good way to ad verticality to my battle maps. I have made a set and used them last night, amazing. And they are so much fun just to play around with.

Looks great, and very versatile, of course! Two pieces you could add would be L shaped corners and L shaped inside corners. Then you have a set of modular stairs that can seamlessly wrap around a dias/platform.
Joshua Chunick I thought that too! Or individual magnetised blocks that can be attached together in any number of combinations - like dungeon Lego.
I could watch you derp around with these pieces all day. Gotta make my own!

Perfect! I like making elaborate builds, but sometimes you just need something simple, endlessly usable, and fast to build, especially when you don't have much time before the next dnd session

I love this! My very first crafting build was a "set" of stackable wooden blocks with this kind of thing intended. It was great but trying to cut wood blocks without power tools is time consuming, and finding cheap wood is hard. This is exactly what I envisioned and is way easier to do! Thank you so much for making it happen!

I'm going to start my set tonight! I also have a big bag of the foam baby blocks to paint (DM Scotty) dungeon blocks. Combining the stairs, dungeon blocks, and different sized dungeon tiles is going to be awesome!! Great video, thanks for sharing this great idea!!

Have you tried adding your "detail color" (in this case the browns) to your stone before your final drybrush? When you do your final drybrush over your detail colors it looks more like stuff has settled into the stone, rather than being a variation of the stone or something on the stone.

Just cut out a bunch of these, I think it's worth knowing the tiles look to be 1/4" inch in height each. On another note, I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy a good quality hot wire table foam cutting unit, hand cutting these with a Olfa knife was doable, but much more a chore that I thought considering the number of tiles I wanted to assemble. Other than that I'm excited to see if they turn out as good and playable as I see here on this creative channel. :) Blue Skies

This is a great idea. It reminds me of building stuff in Minecraft. maybe there is a way to pull this Minecraft building idea into the terrain. Maybe using DM Scotty's dungeon blocks and your stairs .... this will require more thought and experimentation. These stairs at least will really add to my terrain sets. I really liked you example real, that sold this concept to me. Thank you so much for all that you do and for another great vid.
Awesome idea. Seems like you could speed up the build by cutting out 4" lengths, stacking them with a one inch offset and then cutting the whole thing in half. With one cut, you would have two identical staircases.

I'm also wondering about adding two small inset steps into each change of level, to show how the figures could get from one level to the next. It would have to look the same from the sides, though.

I hate building set pieces because how many times can your players encounter the same building or ruin? This type of thing would be great for modular building of stone terrain!
Woah! These are a great idea. I feel like they would work well with wood tiles as well (although those might be better suited for being thinner? Maybe 1-2 inches wide?). I like the idea of having versatile objects, since it's really tough to craft individualized setpiece terrain all the time. It's a lot easier to go "ok, there's a thing in the middle of the room, represented by this cube, here are the details you find on it." I'd probably try to incorporate a magnet in the center stair somewhere, since I can easily imagine my players knocking these over.
I was thinking a magnet, too...
I think the easiest way to magnetize them would be to cut a slit underneath the 1 inch and 2 inch blocks and shove in a small magnet parallel to the stair riser. This would be prior to hot gluing them together. If you make the 1 inch magnet North and the 2 inch magnet South, then each stair set will be able to connect.

Pretty cool idea. Definitely been times I could have used these. My PCs showdown on top the great Black Tower, which featured an elevated area could have benefited from this idea.
As other have pointed out or wondered. How are these for weight and not getting knocked apart during play?

These are great. I actually made a set a while ago. I coated them with textured drywall caulking for added strength.

I have made these and came up with another quick saver. Stop using hot glue. You have already painted these up with a black base coat. Superglue works fine on the foam once that base coat has dried. I get stings and spaces when using hot glue. Having the basecoat allows supergluing the foam together without melting the foam. Also I suggest using the gel type superglue.
This concept is probably the most simple, but the most effective. I wonder if it would be good with dungeons with moving block traps? I think it would.

I rally like your vids, some Friends of mine and i want to start a dnd session of multiple diverse acts (we will rotate who will be DMing), we Also already play warhammer (40k and age of sigmar) for about 10 years
This does seem to be able to be aplied to warhammer too so i think i'll copy this great idea!
But 1 question, why not finish it with clear latex spray to seal it up and add some friction not only to the base but also while stacking them top to top?

You could even take this idea and make the 3 stair levels go up diagonally. so for a perfect cube, the base would be 3x3 with a corner cube missing, the middle level would be a right angle of sorts, and the 3rd layer would just be a 1x1 block in the corner.. then just put one on top of each other (upside down). That is absolutely a longer building process, but you wouldn't need as many anyway. It would be cool to put this idea in the corners of wall areas, etc.. imagination.. in combination with the video ideas.

I could see 1" wide being useful as well. Probably not as much as 2", but still useful.
Good idea! Any plans to expand on this and make a dual-purpose 1x2x3 block or 2? They wouldn't be as hefty as real 1x2x3 blocks, but could serve many of the same purposes.
Very cool
Now do this with one inch high foam instead to make it fit onto the grid no matter which way you flip it. That way you can turn them on what would be the short edge side on your stackers and they’ll still fit the grid, making for even more versatility. I have a bunch of hobby store 2” and 1” wooden cubes that I’ve used for years for terrain elevation, but the biggest problem was all the loose cubes. Now I know what I’m doing with them-making stackers. :)

the problem with this is a 1 inch height on a figure is roughly a whole meter high making them unusable for steps
Bento San I mean 1/2” high steps like in the video would be up 2.5 feet, also making for awkward steps. *shrug* In the end I didn’t make 1” high stackers and instead I made some steps like these out of three layers of foam core and that seems to work well as a bridge between high (1” high dungeon tile”) and low terrain and I can call the height of the high terrain as high as 20’ high. With each step up representing as much as 5’ high. The problem with terrain on the table for D&D is that anything higher than an inch high can start to block a player’s view of the minis. I use the dungeon tiles but try not to stack them too high. In a way it takes 2.5D and extends it just a bit. You get interesting looking terrain that gets the idea across, while keeping the view clear. I’m still trying to solve for the tree problem though. Stumps could work I suppose. Still, these stackers look great on the table. If I made a set though I’d have to keep them towards the DM screen so as not to block the view, if possible. ^_^
