I've just made my 1st walls. I'm playing with my 7 year old twins and my 3 year old little girl. Kept getting knocked over. Saw an idea on line where to put screws I the bottom of the wall pillar etc and this adds weight to prevent them falling over. Works a treat

Great video! I know I'm 5 years late, but I was trying to make some modular walls a couple months back and going nowhere fast. One of the things I like about terrain is the verticality of set pieces.

I would also quickly round off the corners with a knife to fit with the look of the field stones, and I always keep a nice coarse, fist sized rock in my craft supplies for rolling stone texture afterwards :) Doesn't cost a thing :)
These are great! Although these days I prefer to make them out of individual bricks, believe it or not I actually find it much quicker to build (use tacky glue) Taking into account, i'll have made a tonne of bricks previously for all my building (use a rock + coffee can tumbler for texture)

Never fail to impress! I'm glad the channel is doing so well. 12 crafting channels and I find myself telling everyone about this one, oh yeah, I check out that one also, but DungeonCraft is so clear and easy to follow, Prof. DM doesn't "hide" or casually pass over any steps, like some of the people he references, seem to. Maybe it's accidental, and their just not as organized. ... I will continue my word of mouth campaign. This is one of, if not the best, channel out there so far. Keep on with the good work.👍👍
Thank you for sharing. I don't think the others hide anything. When you're taping you often discover your takes are not usable because you moved the miniature out of the frame. Happens to me all the time. I appreciate the word of mouth. Steer people to the campaign videos, please. They are the hardest to make but get the fewest views!

Been enjoying your videos. About to DM my first original campaign and I've found your approach to the game very helpful! Something I'd love to see you talk about sometime is what your approach is to adapting/improvising on the fly, allowing the players to dictate the story, but reconciling that with what you have prepared. Also how you do this with combat, and adapting the difficulty on the fly... would love to hear your perspective!
I'll have to think about that for a while. I don't know how I do that. It's an instinct having evolved from having run many games, and having the players screw things up. Great suggestion!

As a kid I crafted all those things out of cardboard, You can made a simple stand by folding both dies outside and glueing that on something heavy and cardboard is easy to paint. It is not as proffesional looking as your stuff, but it was about the level of art skills I had at that time - and just for comparison: I'm not even able to draw a straight line, so i absolutely suck at art.

In the first, great video and execution. They look good and will be very versatile.
You could probably skip the clear glue step and just hit the end product with two coats of Minwax sealant. The huge advantage of Minwax over other rattle-can sealants is that the propellant won't melt foam so if you (somehow) didn't get 100% coverage on your paints, it will be OK. The rattle-can is quicker to dry than glue by far and the poly-acrylic won't reactivate once fully dry.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I can see that. It all depends on your table and the material. There are some who are all about cardboard and craft-foam. BMC loves him some XPS. I have recently converted to EVA foam (the stuff they make floor mats out of) because it's nigh-on indestructible...as in, I literally throw my terrain in a tubby and let it rattle around as I carry it across town. I'd never do that with XPS or the other stuff.

Thanks! That's the point of me including the miniature stuff and I'm glad people appreciate it. If you want to get into painting I have a few videos--next one airs this Thursday. Watch it and you'll see how easy it is to paint using inexpensive brushes.

Though you can have better Structure on styrofoam, with much more afford, this video shows the easy and time saving way to create solid walls. Really good one!

This is all great if you've got time to kill - and crafting can be very therapeutic - but you don't need to do half the stuff here and you can save money by eschewing glue and sealant. Also if you don't want to buy foam, check your recycling bins for any suitable materials including thick cardboard. All you need is a cutting implement, acrylic paint and a felt pen. Remember, don't use spray paint on foam, it will dissolve the foam.

This is great, I'll have to try making up some walls, though I opted for a different type of Styrofoam when I made up the battle map previously (turned out great so thank you for the idea!) so will try to play with that.

The thickness is meassured in inches, but the width in centimeters? what kind of sorcery is this?!
If you really wanna mess with someone give the measurement in millichains.
When people say Mod Podge is just watered down white glue I have the same reaction as that Simpsons where Dr. Frink shouts out "Pi is exactly 3!"
Right! If you smell Mod Podge, you can totally tell there is more than water and glue in there.

There is a lacquer in the mix along with PVA and water. I'm pleased with the effect and appreciate the build.

I really love these videos! I am an artist myself, but sadly I run and play online (Even our Family Game is on roll20) So no matter how much the little kid in me want's to try making some of this stuff, I cannot come up with enough of an excuse. But it has motivated me to try making some digital terrain and such. (It's just not the same)

I REALLY wish you'd been posting back when I spent a bloody Fortune on Dwarven Forge! Their products are GORGEOUS, but they have the dual drawbacks of "You get what you pay for" (you actually DO!) and they're heavy / bulky.
However, DW does have one ADVANTAGE: durability. You can NOT accidentally break one of their pieces. I know - it's hard enough to break one intentionally.

There is no question Dwarven Forge make a high quality product. I have a ton of it.
My easy way to make walls is use chop sticks. Shows where it would be and easy to look at miniatures.

Thanks for doing this video. Had started making my own UDT and thought about using the scrap cuttings for walls. The circular portion of the cut outs will also be good for making walls to create circular rooms and so-forth. Keep them coming. Question: are there links to your actual gaming sessions? Would be nice to see your ideas in actual play!!!

Hi, I just was looking at this for reference for making my won D&D walls and noticed that you couldn't remember where the wall you used for reference for yours was from. It looks like a War World Gaming wall to me!
It looks a heck of a lot like HirstArts to me. A lot of people cast/assemble/paint and then sell small quantities at wargaming conventions. EDIT: You'd be able to tell if the thickness of that wall piece is exactly 0.5" and the height is 1".
Coming up, as 3d printing becomes more popular but before everyone has one, you'll see everyone selling that and you'll be able to tell based on layer lines.

Oh hey I did this after I made my UDT. Then I decided it look better with implied walls. Make the next video about how it's better with implied walls.
I will be making a video with corner pieces as edges, implying the walls but giving the parameters more definition. This way people have more options. Thanks for watching!

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 terrain pieces. I made a wood paneled UDT, but it looks strange (as if the players are in a much larger building) unless I meticulously model the outside of the building to make sense. And that just makes the UDT not serve its purpose of saving time and effort at all.

I'm confused. You say in the beginning that you use the 1" factory edges as the bases but then you cut the material 1cm wide and use the 1" base as the side. Am I missing something?

I'm confused on the dimensions. From the video, the walls are clearly taller than they are wide. So, are the dimensions 1cm wide and 1in (the thickness of the Styrofoam) tall? At 1:40 you say that the 1in edge will be used for the bottom.

Why do you use clear glue for the sealing coat since white glue dries clear already?
Good question. White glue can leave a milky look BUT there's really no reason for a sealer at all. You can just hit them with minwax. As a matter of fact, clear glue can get tacky again in high humidity, so I no longer use it.

Love you videos. What tool do you use to cute your foam. Those walls are perfectly cut.
How thick do you apply your mod podge + black paint? Cause in my experience, the mod podge kinda covers the stone texture I create using the aluminum foil ball.

I always see people using XPS Styrofoam for their crafts. But those are crazy expensive where I live, does EPS Styrofoam also work?

Great video! Two questions though: how do I cut the foam if I don't own a hot wire cutter, and what size ballpoint pen do you use?
I just did a trial build of UDT and I used a breakaway box cutter to cut the foam, worked great. The ball point pen was just a cheap average Bic.
Utility knife. Use a good one--they cost $10. The fattest pen available. I think I mentioned it in the UDT video.
What type of material was that again? I am looking for something like that but am unable to find it.
It's "Fomular" brand insulation from Home Depot.

I like this wall design. I have made tiles with the raised edges (DM Scotty I think) but was wanting to make some with thickness and walls, that don't block LOS. This is what I think I need to make.
I thought Mod Podge dried clear? I have just used glue myself.

Eh. I still don't like walls. I feel like errant fingers will knock them around and they just make it more difficult. I got to break out my UDT this past Sunday. To simulate walls I painted up a bunch of columns to illustrate wall constraints:

It works well enough and we only had one instance of a player accidentally trying to walk through a wall and that was because, using your iniativeless combat rules, he was struggling to get out of the way of a pair of goblins trying to set up flanking and sneak attacks. It was caught immediately and corrected with no loss of game flow.
The pre made walls look like Pegasus Hobbies Wall (stone). I have them..

Good video but......your greenstuff cures in "about 10 minutes"?!! what kinda greenstuff are you using mate? Normally it'll take at least a few hours if not more depending on temperature to cure

This was the first time i saw the ultimate terrain. I find my players become 290% more tactical if I start them a minimum of 2 feet (61 cm) away from the enemy. It requires 4 walking turns or 2 full running turns to engage so it doesn’t become a game of bunch ball. I love the rotating table, but I don’t think a 4 foot susan is practical for my playstyle.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 the opposite in fact. I need a bigger one! I've found that my players get more tactical in bigger rooms. Because they can't reach the enemy immediately it gives the magics and rangers a chance to shine while the melee guys run in. And the melee guys have to choose their battles because the enemies are farther apart. It solves the problem of "i stand there and hit them"
Yikes. I guess you could use the entire 5x5 piece of foam. That's a LOT of foam carving.
