    Favorite channel. It disgusts me how few quality mechanics there are nowadays. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    Im glad to see you warning the viewers about the hydrologic danger. I have just pulled one out of a 2010 Prius and will be tearing it down to see the extent of the damage from driving with a bad head gasket. It hadn't thrown a rod yet but it was knocking. I will video the tear-down soon.

    It's a good idea to check piston heights of number one and four in this case. You might detect a bent piston rod at this point. Also, rotate the crankshaft with the head removed and make sure there's no abnormal cylinder wall polishing. I did one that had opposing mirror shiny surfaces but didn't know what that meant. I found out the hard way when the number one piston rod made a hole in the engine block. (You can also sometimes see the opposing shiny surfaces with a scope.)

    THE DEATH RATTLE!
    I had a 2012 Prius V. Blown head gasket at approximately 150,000 miles. That particular generation had a lot more on and off cycles with the gas engine creating heating and cooling patterns that aluminum just doesn't respond to as well as a cast iron engine. I've talked to quite a few people who have owned that generation of hybrid and they have had a lot of similar experiences between 120,000 and 150,000 miles.
    It is almost uniformly people who told me that they followed the owner's manual of 10,000 mile oil changes.
    Now, I'll never consider buying a used Prius. Something to keep in mind is that a lot of people who buy Priuses have this kind of mentality of "leaving it be." That means, if they don't hear something or a warning indicator doesn't light up on the dashboard, they don't do anything about it. Maintaining the vehicle is not their priority. You can see this in certain insurance companies with a much higher rates that Prius drivers have to pay. Insurers like Geico attract more school teachers, School teachers actually have a higher rate of accidents and, if you walk through school parking lot, you'll see a lot more junk in the car. Just saying..
    5,000 mile oil changes are a big part of protecting the car, as it helps keep the engine dissipate heat better. Ultimately, and it's usually the third or fourth cylinder, you will drive a hot car park it overnight and the next morning you'll have some really rough misfires when you start the car. The misfires are caused by hot coolant sitting in an engine that is not moving and the pressure remains high and breaks through into the cylinder.
    Buying one of these cars used is a risk. You just don't know how the car's been treated. 10,000 mile intervals on oil changes is just way too long.
    It is also important to change the coolant, it's been recommended at about 80,000 miles instead of 100,000 miles and probably better at 5 year intervals as well.

    I did this job on an 09 Matrix (same engine) not too long ago. It blew out the head gasket at the narrow portion between #3 & #4. No coolant loss or overheating. Just a severe misfire on those two cylinders. 177K. Machine shop pressure checked the valves and checked the surface for flatness, gave it a scuff with a sanding block, and told me to just bolt it back up.

      The Matrix also suffers from the same head gasket issues the 2010 Prius suffers from?

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hedgehogthesonic3181 It's the same engine. The Prius starts and stops a lot which is harder on the head gaskets. The Matrix, same as the Corolla, and same engine as in the Prius blew the head gasket between the cylinders. Had a whole section gone and was leaking compression between #3 & #4. No coolant loss or overheating.

    You probably know this but I highly recommend replacing those alignment pins on the head. I dis on mine when I did a head gasket and no issues, but a friend tried to use the old ones and he's having oil leak from the area. Both pins from the dealer are $5 for both

      I think I saw on "gasket masters" its from such temperature variations because engine shuts off/runs constantly. (expansion/contraction)

    Probably the gasket, but could be a tiny crack in the head or block top.

    Perhaps this was the result of too much cylinder pressure on a cold, old engine? Or one too many thermal cycling events? Or both? Hard to say. Probably not a great idea to push the engine unless it has been throughly warmed up... same with any engine really... but in the case of a hybrid, the engine may take much longer to warm up if the engine is constantly shutting off during city driving. This could increase the risk of gasket failure, especially in an older engine like this one. Or something else is to blame? Ways to help prevent this would be good to know because it does not look like and easy and/or cheap fix.
