Im sorry am i missing something here. The first line of defense is with the parents. Teach your children that if some random person starts talking to you and saying strange things to you, you DO NOT respond and you come and tell the parent. Teach your children what is right and wrong on these platform. Teach your children to have self worth and intelligence to not be swayed by compliments and nice words (especially from random strangers!) 🤷‍♂At 13 (which i believe is the minimum age to join these platforms?) if a parent has instilled these things early, when they arise, its much easier for that child to recognize this isn't right and tell someone. How can the platforms be liable? When they actually have many provisions in place to try and prevent this. I feel like Americans are always trying to pass the buck with responsibility (calling out the parents here). The beginning and end lies with the parents, no?
Do you know what would be WAY more effective than anything these platforms can do.... Mirror your children's phone into another phone so you can see all of their activity, even every keystroke, then you as the parent can see EVERYTHING that is happening and PARENT accordingly. Its on the parents wayyy more than the platforms.

A more fair comparison would be the boy scouts. Because it's a large organization that had created a channel for predators to find victims.
So we should definitely hold these companies accountable! As a society it's important that we protect children, and these social media platforms have literally paved the way for CSAM and human trafficking!
Besides, these CEOs' and their companies are raking in obscene amounts of money. They aren't the ones who need protection. It's the kids that need to be protected.

Technology is ou there, if you give your children any smart device, you are allowing your children to explore everything they can, children can hear or seeing things in school and do your own research on google, also I’ve seen so many parents giving their children cellphones, Ipads or pcs to have free time to do other things or work.

Parents have no accountability or knowledge about what their children say or do online? Parent's lack of personal responsibility for not regulating their children is the problem. Govt is happy 2 fill the void. Child safety is how wikileaks type information will be censored tomorrow. Govt will be everyone's parent.

I do agree that these social networking platforms need to take some responsibility for what goes on, on their platforms however!
I also think that the parents need to take responsibility for their children and what they do. I remember my Facebook come out it was for 18 and over. I was Guilty of setting up an account for my children and changing their year of birth, mainly so they had their own email address (my son still uses he’s to this day), I admit it was wrong. Parents need to be watching their children and not blaming the rest of society for the things that they should be doing!

I believe that the leaders of these organizations are extremely well-read and educated on the topic. While the senators have only realised these problems through the complaints they've been getting, these tech giants have been investing and developing the solutions to counter these issues.
Instead of heckling and making a villain out of these tech leaders, wouldn't it be more beneficial to work with them?
And the above statement, in my opinion, holds true not just in the case of CSAM but other social issues as well. It has taken a long time for the world to come together on platforms and share knowledge and updates globally. These kind shows that put up the leaders on pedestal will only scare other possible tech leaders of the future to take the stand for the betterment of the world!
I've grown up to learn that the technology is a double-edged sword. I'm sure the parents also do understand this fact. It's a shared responsibility between these tech giants and the parents to help pave the right way for the kids and their upbringing. Social media definitely cannot be the only cause of the mishaps. How are parents not at all responsible?
