    "When I look out in the world, I don't see nobody that looks like me with their pockets full unless they rapping a lyric or dribbling a ball. So what else you got in here for me?" To this day that line still gets to me.

    "You know what's gonna happen when you die? You're gonna rot in the ground, and people are going to go on living, and they're going to forget all about you. And when you ROT, do you think it's gonna matter whether you were an original gangsta? You're dead, and nobody, NOBODY, is gonna want to remember you, because all you left in the world is this."~The only quote that still relevant.

    You're all missing the point of this scene... This is all about perspective, these kids are sharing their life experiences, & what they believes because of them. The point is to help people understand, not just say "wow" & dismiss them as unimportant. When you're raised with so much negativity & hopelessness, what do you expect will happen?

      JamesRhymerFilms I expect that they grow a pare & accept that life isn't fair. Life is a journey that YOU need to figure out, accomplish what you can and enjoy it. I know that these people are actors, but the people that they are representing still don't understand it. I'm not sure if they understand that you can do what you want in this country, but they take it for granted because their environment surrounding them makes them feel inferior. If they had a tough life then congrats on making it this far, so go out in the world and explore what opportunities you have.

    This movie was out when I was in the 8th grade. I remember watching it in class and I watched it again when I was in high school. Not going to lie, but this movie change students to open up more in class. Sharing on their true feelings about anything and making them focus on their education. This is one of the scenes, is the key for these students in this movie to realize what they put themselves into and change themselves for their future, in my opinion. Including the teacher on facing new hard challenge position to help these kids.

      So what???? People in politics, the government leaves behind bullshit!!!! Now that's what they don't tell you! They don't tell you that the government and police officers are worse than the gang bangers on the street...Now in not saying this is right but gangs are like a family, they will fight for each other and die for each other... And yea they will get respect ✊ not from the world 🌎 but from the street... They don't care about society's respect for them. They care about the streets respect ✊ God it's not too hard to understand. I guess it is if you haven't been around this kind of stuff.

    I agree with both the teenagers in the classroom and the teacher. On the one hand, not a single adult, white or black, takes the effort to understand their students' situations or lives. While on the other hand, a lot of teenagers live ignorantly and refuse to learn because they see themselves as inferior both intellectually and racially. What I've learned is that if you are looking for something (i.e. the man in the back's comment on how no one of his ethnicity is very wealthy) you won't always find it until you either become that something or stop looking for the comparison altogether.

    • @byoung4eva1
      @byoung4eva1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      +Christie Parks Knowing how the world views u, isn't seeing yourself as inferior, especially when it comes to race. No matter how educated i am, i know that growing my natural hair out could prevent me from getting a job, because for years black ppl have been told their natural hair is nappy, unkempt, ugly, and "unprofessional" for the working world, unless it's straightened, and if it is an afro it better be very short. Many black women hadn't seen their natural hair since they were a kid, now many are embracing their hair, and discussing the discrimination faced while doing so, thanks to a movement that started via youtube in 2008. Recognizing that society treats us like dirt, doesn't mean we actually feel like dirt.

    If you have never growing up in an environment like this, you simply will never understand it. When everyday is a constant struggle on just having to survive, especially when people are young, it makes sense that they'll develop a sense of cynicism about the world and other people. If you we're raised in an area where violence and racial struggles haven't ever been a concern to you, then it's just difficult to relate.

    the idea of having to EARN respect is so flawed. if everyone lived by that idea, nobody in the world would be respected. respect should be given, and only lost when that individual gives you a reason to lose respect for them.

    • @darylesells19
      @darylesells19 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I hear you, but if you give your respect to everyone wouldn't that make the loss of it that much greater? Personally I give my respect to those who have earned it.

    This was a really deep scene....I just finished watching the movie. When she was talking about how if they are dead and rotting and how nobody is going to care if they were a “original gangster” I almost burst into tears. They are so young. Just hoping they can survive another day protecting they own. Too young to be living like that. Too harsh for anybody to be living like that.

    This movie was amazing...it brought tears to my eyes ...it reminded me of the reality that some kids face....and we could have all the fancy 'integrated' school programs ....but all they really need is someone to care and guide them....the teacher here made a change in these kids lives...the other teachers at the school completely dismissed these kids seeing them all as problems and without recognizing that they really need help and someone to care....indeed not everyone is cut out for this ...but the movie showed how you can impact on someone's life no matter how messed up their situation is.... I really cried watching it because it's not just a movie but a reality

    I remember growing up in the 'hood' back in 06 -08. You couldn't ball up in the park without being asked what color/gang you rep. In HS we had kids coming from worser neighborhoods involved in gang banging but what I liked about HS was that everyone was chill in the classroom because being inside the school we would forget about the shit that occurred outside, and some of the teachers I had were really kind and cool with the students.

  • @Slim545
    @Slim545 9 ปีที่แล้ว +552

    Regular everyday inner city problems, yu have to ask yourself how do yu expect these kids to focus in school with all this nonsense going on..... n what's even worse is that the teacher's don't even understand the students wheter it's college or hs

    • @r5t6y12
      @r5t6y12 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Except that the teacher can hopefully get the students to believe that the school itself is a refuge from the sickness that is the inner city.
      There are always people inside the school who can't be terrorized by what's going on in the streets outside the fenceline. If there are free activities for the students to get involved in (even just watching their fellow students competing in sports competitions with other local schools) they can hang out in that area knowing that they can find something to do away from the misery that is "being off school grounds".
      If the inner city is so tough the school should be their first escape.
      Of course I went to a suburban school where 90% of the students lived in single family homes that were spread out across 15 square miles of 5 different towns........, so what do I know...........................?

      ***** Yes. I would trust her. If I have a girlfriend, I think I would need to be in a position where I know her enough and she knows me enough that we both feel comfortable enough to start dating. Respect is earned. Trust is lost. You don't even know me as a person, why would you respect me? What have I or anyone else that you know have done to earn respect? Did you see that person go out of their way to help others or achieve something so great? Giving respect willy nilly is stupid.
      You don't know what respect means, I'll google it for you:
      Respect:
      a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.

  • @rejoyce57
    @rejoyce57 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Here's a simple example of giving respect to get it: I started to walk into a convenience store. A young Latino man got there first and held the door open for me, a fairly unattractive, gray-haired white woman. I said, "Thank you, sir." I respected him because he gave me that opportunity. If he hadn't held the door, there probably would have been no reason for us to interact, and therefore no opportunity to give and to get that respect. I will never forget his kindness. That's what all this starts with-- kindness.

    I wanna become a teacher in the future, english as well, because it was my biggest strength back in school. Now, we've all seen these teachers where you were never really fond of seeing them, I had one (Our classteacher) that was loved by nearly everyone because he seemed to be cool, but in my darkest days in school he wouldn't even care about my story while I was bullied, while the others were beating me up, calling me names, hiding and destroying my stuff or throwing stones at me and my only friend.That d*ck didn't care just like any other teacher even though it happened right in front of the teachers balcony. Why? Because they didn't think about caring. But this woman, who actually lives and helped all these students through their miserable lives and motivated them to do better, she's a hero in my eyes and I want to be just like her. I don't want to be the boring and hated teacher that doesn't get her sh*t together, I want to be a teacher that actually teachesAND cares.
