To play devil's advocate for why the dad is worried his son will become an adventurer, grandpappy disappeared for 20 years and everyone thought he was dead. That in and of itself should be enough reason to be worried.

    • @RavenCloak13
      @RavenCloak13 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Not really. This was a thing he was worrying about even before he knew his dad was alive and considering how open he is with his son and wanting to talk with him it seems rather weird that someone you thought was dead and had no impact on your family for that long would effect your son. Like, did he not tell his son HOW he just left them? I feel like that be something you bring up or would be brought up logically.
Hell, the dad having any problem with his son wanting to do something else also seems weird. Like the first trailer I saw of this film I thought the dad was some poor out on his luck farmer whose president friend from years back came to ask him to help them out. Come to find out that's the complete opposite and I actually wonder why he doesn't have more workers tending to these fields that would be a very big part of this worlds culture. I know he could still have some worry and he's kind of pushy but the fact he's willing to talk to his son at all like this shows he should have some reasonableness to him and it's not like his son ever shows he hates his family at the start, just wants to try something different.
Though I do have to wonder why the dog doesn't even get a prosthetic leg. Like we have that tech now and these fuckers got hover tech and flying vehicles. I'm not saying he should be able to just cure cancer or regrow limbs but come on.

I know this is played off as a joke, but I don't see Strange World being seen some as an Underrated Classic in the future the same way Treasure Planet and Atlantis. The difference here is is that those two movies WERE ACTUALLY GOOD, entertaining and still hold up years later all thanks to strong charactes, themes, storylines, environment. everything you need to make a strong story.
Strange World is COMPLETELY MID, the only that will stand the test of time is the strange world itself I can see that place being the setting for a video game or the very least a level in Kingdom Hearts. Just without ANY of the Characters

The worldbuilding was the most disappointing part. I just watch to see how they'd approach the speculative biology part and while it had some effects, it was still too shy and it made me question why the humans were event there in first place. Plus the characters were boring anyway, the dad acts like more like he's the kid's big brother instead of his father, like, trying too hard to be hip.
    Treasure Planet: "wow, space galleons"
    Atlantis: "wow, supersubmarines"

Low-key think Disney had an AI write a script and then just added all the token diversity in an effort to make it appeal to millennials. It all just screams low effort. I think that's what people are actually complaining about when they decry something as "woke". They're actually complaining that the story is leaning more on the perceived value of someone just being a person of color, LGBT, or having a disability instead of properly developing a character as an INDIVIDUAL. Modern Disney is also SO AFRAID of depicting diverse people in any fashion other than completely perfect and positive which ironically ends up making these characters boring and unlikeable.

This movie does what so much media today does, make sure it ticks every element of the diversity checkbox and expects that alone to sell the movie, but they just gloss over the writing, story, world building, character development and more.
we saw the same happen with the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Rings of Power, Pinocchio almost the entirety of the MCU phase four and so much more.

This inevitably drives away half of their potential customer base, who are conservative, and simply came to watch a good story unfold. Disney has chosen a side in politics, and it’s causing them to lose a lot of money. Their middle management doesn’t care, though, they just want their wine policies implemented. Doesn’t matter that Disney decided to anger an entire state, Florida, by trying to bully them into cancelling legislation, and mischaracterizing it as banning homosexuality, when it actually bans obscenity for anyone below 5th grade. Because of that, Disney lost their one-of-a-kind tax district in Florida, and lost a ton of money, and the same dynamic is playing out in Disney’s movies. They make a mediocre or bad movie, advertise it as being incredibly gay because they put one gay scene in it, and it turns off a bunch of people who don’t care about that kinda stuff, and just wanted a good movie. It also doesn’t help them with the more liberal crowd, because they won’t be satisfied until there’s a million gay scenes, or even gay sex in children’s movies.

While at the surface it's great to have the gay characters, the non-white characters and every in between it feels more like a stage piece then they're character. It is kinda a weird thing to tackle. You can't just have a character and be like "I am gay and that is my personality", its shallow. Do something with that character, take what a teenager would go through relationships but in this case is the son and this guy he likes. You said the Incredibles family was relatable because how they acted and that is how it should be done with any other character. Just in this case they're gay. It always feels like more like a marketing point then just "we're normalizing this!" But it sells for some people, lowest common denominator kinda thing honesty.

So they slap the rainbow to get you to watch it, but also make it as hollow as can be to get at least some money from people on the other side, and then they hope that together it makes a profit.
But when you balance things like this, you end up with a flop as neither camp is satisfied. One side sees "Diversity checklist The Movie" while the other side sees "Diversity: How hollow can we make it". Neither camp ends up feeling strong enough to care about such project and the project just flops.

I honestly think modern writers are too afraid of critics calling their characters annoying or unlikable
Characters just aren't allowed to have major flaws unless they are the antagonist of the film or if it's a flaw that's barely an issue.
I had the same issue with that terrible new AppleTV+ Movie, Luck. The main character is completely unselfish and nice and has no real goal of her own
and selfless protagonists are great don't get me wrong, I love them. But without any real struggles or flaws of their own they become bland and boring.
same with this movie here, it just wants to have a happy family dynamic and that's it, without real struggle.

This movie has so many problems but one problem, inparticularly that just stands out. Like all environmental preachy movies is when you think about the context of world
So all humanity is on the back of a turtle shouldn't we be more insink with the turtle. Even if we don't know we are on the back of the animal, we should be like a natural defense for the turtle for like Parasites. On top of a shell.
In fact, the main bag guy should be a bug hurting the land, and they have to kill them to protect their land unintentionally, knowing they were on top of a turtle.
But that will conflict with preaching messages of how we're the real parasites, and we shouldn't judge a book by its cover blah blah blah.

The thing that rubs me the wrong way about disney is their lack of subtlety. All their lessons are on the nose, all the writing feels like modern day shoved into a fantasy setting, and the representation is everywhere to the point where it feels artificial.
I want to get lost in the film, but they aren't skilled enough to push their messaging subtly and it yanks me back to reality constantly.

We just want good entertainment devoid of toxic identity politics and with great characters; diverse or otherwise. Heck! In my country, Nigeria, guys like me who grew up in the 2000s relate more to characters like Superman than Finn from the disney star was movies because teh former is a great, flawed, well developed and heroic person while the latter was poorly developed and uninteresting.

Ok, I subscribed. I saw the treasure planet/Atlantis review, and I thought your video was hilarious af xD. I’ve seen the intro of this video so far and I am finding it equally hilarious 😂. I love treasure planet, but couldn’t get behind Atlantis. I had some similar views that you did to it… I’m excited to see what you think of Strange world and I’ll edit my comment after I finish the video.
Edit; just finished the vid. I have a lot of mixed feelings about strange world… to sum it all up; Encanto did it WAY BETTER. there’s plenty of diversity in that movie BUT ☝🏻 it doesn’t feel forced NOR is it remotely political. The diversity is real and ORGANIC (Strange world looks more like a post colonialist country like the US specifically New York City) and I think we gotta stop shoving forced diversity on movies especially the ones that are meant for families. My favorite character out of this movie was Ethan, because he was the best written, and had some form of relatability. Should him being gay be mentioned in a movie that targeted for younger audiences??? Idk. His crush had the dumbest hair cut ever tho. Ngl I think I have way less of an issue of seeing 2 grown ass adult women kissing or holding a baby together idk than a movie targeted to a younger audience talking about a kid’s sexuality 🤔. Did EVERY single diverse minority need to be inserted into this movie, absolutely not. The movie felt like it was just trying to hit a quota with diversity and even sent a very dishonest and contrived message about saving the earth and pollution as well 🤦🏻‍♀️. If there were maybe just a couple of diverse characters sprinkled about in the movie and if it had a much deeper and meaningful plot that wasn’t so politically centered to American ideals, maybe it would’ve been a much better movie. Also the characters are so dang ugly. Idk what’s going on here, but the humans all have ugly facial proportions. I also HATED Searcher Clade. He was a piece of shit father. Did not respect his son’s boundaries, a coward, but then overly arrogant during the wrongest of moments. He was all over the place. Grandpa Jaeger Clade was better imo. His one toxic trait was being neglectful of searcher, but I thought he was alright especially after having his reunion with the family he left behind. None of the women were interesting. They were too “perfect” (Mary sue loool) and the mom and president lady had way more chemistry. The mom and searcher had 0 chemistry LOL. Umm. The dog was funny, and I really liked the squishy creatures in the “strange world”. That’s all I gotta say about it.
