I stopped watching at the end of season three. I didn't even really like season three that much but I felt committed since I had started it. I didn't watch any of season four. But since the last season starting now I'm going to watch a few episodes and see how it goes
As a big Star Trek fan, I've forced myself to watch Discovery as the storylines for each season has been the worst in Star Trek history! This season has the chance to add some sorely needed storytelling to Discovery! But I find myself watching interpersonal relationship storylines that take up 80% of the episodes with 10% for a big chase or fight scenes, leaving only 10% for storytelling. They have turned it into a Soap Opera set in space.
what else would you expect from DEIscovery? they arent telling a star trek story, theyre telling whatever story fits with their diversity first message, as the cost of compelling narrative and actually interesting plot lines. Utter modern drivel.
I don't hate Discovery. I just don't love it. It's just too serious. The entire series is just so serious and melodramatic. It's one life ending, universe altering threat after another. Deep Space Nine took place during a war and was much much lighter than Discovery. All Trek can get serious but Trek is usually a light breezy adventure. Discovery just isn't fun. Discovery features some really great characters and genuinely great acting and there's some neat stories in there. The Section 31 stuff, the mirror universe stuff. It's just not a fun watch for me. All that said I love me some Lower Decks and Brave New Worlds is fun.
That's exactly what's wrong with new Trek. I fully agree. It feels out of canon. Disco looks more modern than TNG although being a show set 110 years in the future of Disco. New Trek probably wouldn't be as controversial if they would have set in mid 25th century.
I LOVE Discovery. I am so excieted for the final season. A part of me wants to wait until it is finished and binge watch it, as I did the majority of the series (I just 'discvered' it a few months back), but I am sad it is ending. I think it has been one of the best Star Trek projects.
Thank you very much for this! I've been a Star Trek fan since 1966. (I"m 69 years old) And ST Discovery never grabbed me as being "good Trek" in the way the original series up through DS9 were. I'm going to make a wild guess here: The writers of Discovery are from a different generation than the writers of the shows I've loved. I won't say anything more about this, because it's truly a gut reaction. But the recaps of each season you've given me here - of a show I'll admit I have not watched - didn't make me want to watch the actual seasons. I have a good friend my age who does like Discovery. I"m going to share your video with him and ask him to explain what's great about the show in his view. At least now I will have an idea of what he's talking about. Unrelated: I love Michelle Yeoh and do plan on watching her Section 31 film. I"m so happy she loves Star Trek so much! Thanks again for all your help. LLAP!
@@SteveBrant55 As another fan who hasn’t watched the series either, mostly due not caring to add the network it is on, I agree on Yeoh. Her character, from the few clips Ive seen, strikes me as the most interesting and compelling.
Saved me so much time! Couldn’t remember which season I was on when I last stopped watching … now realise it doesn’t matter, all seasons are equally boring 😂😢
Discovery is easily fixed... time travel back to when Burnam was supposed to die when she was a kid and bring her to the future. She "died" as a kid, and Disco never happened. The end.
Really appreciate the recap! I'd love to hear ya use your normal conversational voice, rather than a "youtuber" or "announcer" voice. I think it'd come across more authentic, interesting, and engaging, sharing yourself and obvious love of Trek universe, and skill in research and story telling. Thanks again, looking forward to watching more!
I'll go one step farther and offer some hopefully-constructive criticism: I had a rather difficult time understanding much of what was said in this video. It was a combination of your slurring of many words and how fast you were speaking. I tried activating subtitles, but the auto-transcription had difficulty parsing your speech as well.
I enjoyed season 3 the most, as I thought the futuristic setting served the concept really well. No season was perfect -- and the "puzzle box" structure left over from the Bad Robot braintrust behind the show is never as satisfying as just good, episodic storytelling -- but everything feeling so new and dangerous in the 3200s was a pretty good time.
why the end☹️ I actually like this series the far future sounded so interesting I was ready for more content cus they could do whatever with new stuff they want to show without it completely affecting the older Stark content
Just found this show and binged the first season. I think it's the best Star Trek series ever. Shows how bad ass the Klingons are. Not the pretend bad ass that was Worf who managed to get his ass kicked in every hand to hand fight he was ever in. Shows the people talking like real people. Swearing like real people and fighting like real warriors, sometimes winning and sometimes losing, was refreshing. I'm glad someone made a Star Trek series into the action series I thought possible. Not more of the politically correct mediocre crap they have made for the last 50 or so years. Ok there were some aspects that annoyed me but all in all I will hate to see it end.
Saying Discovery is not politically correct, or less so than the previous shows like TNG or DS9 etc., is just flat out incorrect. It is less sanitary, sure, but less politically correct? Absolutely not. In fact, its political correctness appears to be the centerpiece of all of its writing and its mission. Discovery takes the inhabitants of modern-day San Francisco and puts them on a 23rd century starship. The entire premise of Star Trek was that humanity has evolved (that is to say socially, intellectually, technologically and culturally). Putting early 21st century people facing early 21st century problems as Starfleet officers in Star Trek is just contradictory to what Star Trek was created to be. It's not an evolution of the franchise, it's a complete 180 degree turn. Star Trek is also meant to be less about action and more about, well, anything else. Most of the time. The intellectual and philosophical storytelling combined with a TIMELESS commentary on social and political issues made Star Trek so distinct from, say, Star Wars, which always took a more fantasy-like approach to its storytelling and relied on action scenes far more. The cast of Discovery feel like they would be right at home in a CW teen drama, something that can, absolutely, be enticing, fun, or even great, but has little to no connection to Star Trek. The show is also quite mediocre in terms of its visuals, as the cinematographer seems to think that prime telephoto lenses with aperture wide open are somehow "cinematic", making a lot of the scenes more of a blurry mess. It is also VERY dark, as in you can't see that well, since it's so damn dark on the bridge etc. The music is... there. Being forgettable. The casting genuinely feels like a CW teen drama. The respect to canon is non-existent, completely changing the Klingons because... why not, right? Star Trek's ret-cons, when they happened, had always been done to either fix a genuine problem with the story or to update the visuals. This is just... there because they thought it would be cool. Look, there is nothing wrong with loving Discovery, but this has little to nothing in common with Star Trek apart from the name and very surface-level things. Is it any good? I'd say no, but taste is subjective. Is it Star Trek? In name only.
What an idiotic statement of non facts. You are going to throw out 50 years of Trek due to YOUR likes and dislikes and opinion????? Who cares. Way to be aware of changing times and television history. You wouldn't have anything in Discovery without what came before. Amd quite honestly, what came before was done with more subtely and dignity than some of the overwrought emotionalism in this series. Show don't tell. And yet again, Spock has, albeit adopted ANOTHER sibling. Just let Burnham be her own charater!!!!!
Most of the criticism of the show seems to center on the characters Like Burnham's ridiculous ability to instantly understand and solve any problem or most other characters' sort of anti-charisma But listening to this recap, we can see that even if the characters were on point the story lines would have dragged the show down anyway It really seems like the creators/writers sat down and said - what do we know about the Star Trek universe and the way it functions? Cool, let's throw that out and do spore drives, the burn, poorly lit ships and stuff like that
