    Maynard is the master of the double and triple entendre... writing lyrics that can be interpreted in 2, 3 and sometimes 4 different ways - that all depends on how deeply you dive into each Tool song. He often uses sexuality and religion as metaphors in his writing but, amazingly, they seem to always have a much deeper meaning when you dissect them. Maynard has stated that this song is actually about opening up emotionally.

      which one has 4 meanings?

    • @hunterfitch5951
      @hunterfitch5951 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@tacotacotacobajablast6821 The Pot has a ton of different interpretations. From the song being about Led Zeppelin, Marijuana, Government Hypocrisy, a particular judge that used to sentence weed smokers to crazy long sentences and was found out later he smoked pot, there's even a theory that the song is actually part 3 of "wings" "who are you to waive your finger..." Maynard is talking about his own hypocrisy after flaming the "ghouls" in Wings... it goes on and on in that song.

      i've heard it was a critique on the culture here in america of overstimulation - like short attention spans and instant gratification. more or less how that destroys our minds, much like this act possibly destroying bodies. so theres another meaning for the list.

    • @axernot
      @axernot 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      well same thing can be said about a lot of different songs, generally in rock. Individual interpretation opens up the possibility of many different interpretations but I also understand your point about Maynard. Fewer people have been able to write as masterful lyrics as Maynard has. The metaphors, poetic lines, are all so genius, it makes one wonder for a long time about a lot of different things.

    This is the first song on the Aenima album, which is about beginning the journey of self healing and the inner work that leads to spiritual enlightenment. This song (IMO) is about exploring the things inside of you that make you uncomfortable (your trauma) in order to start healing. As the album progresses he metaphorically eulogizes his old self, discovers love outside of himself, rescues his inner child, and works with his shadow self to become a more complete version of himself. All of this sets up the next album, Lateralus, which continues and furthers the journey of personal and spiritual growth. 🌀

      couldn’t agree more! i don’t like it when people claim to have a definitive one-size-fits-all explanation of a song. Especially when in my own personal experience, the same song can mean different things to me at different points in my life.

    • @GeoffPeterson33
      @GeoffPeterson33 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@TeddyGreyOS that’s what I love about TOOL. They’ll intentionally leave an idea pretty open ended in most songs so you can choose what really resonates with you. While Stinkfist could be about overstimulation and desensitization from media and technology (which I can relate to). It could also be about straight up fisting (which I haven’t yet been able to relate to) 😂

    Some folks say that it's about being so over stimulated that nothing effects him anymore so he keeps pushing how far he can go with his lover, first he slips a finger in, then a knuckle and so on all in an attempt to feel something in himself from the action but he is so desensitized that he gets to the point of being in up to his shoulder all in an attempt to feel some kind of reaction in himself from how insanely depraved it has gotten, he has to take it to that extreme to get there....but that's the great thing about tool, there's a million ways you can read into most of their lyrics.

    I believe you would benefit highly from knowing MJK's writing style. He doesn't write lyrics and have the band put music to them. The band composes or mostly composes a song and then he sits down and comes up with rythms, syllables, and then lyrics to fit the music. I've also heard he's typically under the influence of some sort when doing this. But no matter what, the dude has a unique style and it absolutely rocks. Glad you're diving into them more.

    Teddy you’re actually incredible at interpreting lyrics. You seem to catch stuff at first glance that took me dozens of listens to understand. However a lot of times you’re saying “it could be this or maybe it’s about that” and I strongly believe that any good writing/lyrics/poetry means many things. In other words I wouldn’t second guess so much - kind of like you said with slight modification, I think this song IS about consumerism AND it’s about a bad relationship AND war (I hadn’t thought of that) AND one you didn’t mention it’s about addiction. The lyrics are just subtle enough to be applied in many many ways and I think that’s the point! In your reactions you keep coming up with great insights and try to figure out which angle is better instead of realizing it’s both!

  • @thegoatchild3545
    @thegoatchild3545 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    The main point of the song, I think, is revealed in the lines "something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety?" Great stuff as always, Teddy! All the best to you and all the people of the UK in these weird times!🙏

You start off happy with a little, but then you do/use it so much that's not enough anymore. You need more of it to get the same feeling you had before. That's the stinkfist analogy. At first you get stimulation from the finger then its not enough till eventually your past the elbow to try to get the same feeling.

    Yoo! If you want tool D&B check out A Perfect Circle: aMOTION.
    It's dated for the genre, but Maynard's voice is timeless. Cheers and love to the channel.

    You chose to start with Tool ( _I did the same, ngl_ ); you should take a look to A Perfect Circle, with the same singer, and I think they're easier to get into. My personal recommendation is a song call _Disillusioned_ (basing it on what you said on the video) . Also, special mention to their cover of _Imagine_ and the song _Pet_ ... Sorry, I'm so excited, I cannot tell you exactly why tbh I went down the rabbit hole when I discovered them

    We aren't holding hands. That one seems to elude 90% of the reactors for some reason.

    12:41 Stinkfist is from around 1996, the same year as another one you'll no doubt enjoy called Forty Six & 2.
    Please check out their song simple named 'H'.
    And 'Third Eye'.

    Hi Teddy, love your reactions! I'm a huge Tool fan so definitely more please :)
    But I have another request.. as a rap guy, you know rap, but before any rap battles there were calypso wars. I mean like beginning of 20th century and maybe even earlier.. check out a video on youtube: "Calypso War- Lord Invader, Macbeth the Great, Duke of Iron.wmv". It'll blow your mind! And thanks for the reactions, keep em coming! :)
