Or…taking someone who doesn’t know TOOL to a TOOL concert! I foot to take my younger sister to Las Vegas to see them. She was blown away. I was born in 1966 and she was born in 1978. Her favorite music was country. It was only her second concert. Her first was Garth Brooks. Ahhhh watching her discover TOOL live!!! It was my 4th time seeing them. Can you imagine the grin on my face watching her as her jaw dropped when they started??? One of my best days ever!!!!
Teddy my friend! This song is an absolute smasher. 46 is the standard number of human chromosomes, Maynard is singing about humanity, how we are ever changing, and the hope that one day humanity can rise above the troublesome beings we are and evolve into something better. It’s like the next step in human improvement, moving beyond the mundane shit we get ourselves wrapped up in. 🌪️
Damn Teddy, your reactions are simply brilliant. Hallelujah, by the way! Tool is so complex, lyrically as well as musically, and the two combined is like a trip that opens up your mind.
I also believe the ''and two'' refers to the former, alchemical belief that the missing chromosome pair would grant us immortality in that it was the key to fixing perfect, flawless atomic replication (basically removing aging/decay/human entropy). The 2 being the enemy in the song might elude to the infinite unknown which we often ponder blindly, ceaseless :P
The fill after the break is one of the greatest fills of all time. The way it's recorded, it pans all around. Feels like they'd have had to have used 4 or 5 mics just for the toms.
I'm so glad you brought up the Jungian aspect, as this song is absolutely a reference to Carl Jung's philosophies. Yes, you are right about what the Shadow is. As for ehat 46 and 2 means, it refers to chromosomes. I believe 44 normal and 2 sex chromosomes is how modern humans are, but its hypothesized that if we were to evolve further, gaining those two additional chromosomes to become 46 and 2 is the first major step. So yeah, this song is all about changing into a new version of yourself. 🌀
holy 🤯 so the lyrics are basically saying, we don’t evolve by taking away parts of ourselves, we have to add to what we already are 🤔 I just love how far the reaches of theories can go with Tool songs lol
Yup @@TeddyGreyOSEmbracing what we have is how we evolve. The things we hide from ourselves will only make us better if we acknowledge them. In my sophomoric explanation. 🌀 🌀 🌀
This song and Lateralus are both my ultimate motivation songs. I listen to them regularly as just a reminder of depths of human potential. Any time I feel like I can't achieve something, Tool is a shining light in a dark tunnel.
So we're just ignoring the *actual* first pause taking place 7 seconds after starting the song? lol. 😂 Edit: Starts at 0:45, pauses at 0:52 haha. Anyway, 🌀
Yes that's a bass. Justin definitely has a unique tone. I guess that main bass line in the beginning is something he brought to his audition with the band, and it turned into one of their best songs
Watching someone hear a a TOOL song for the first time is so great? But taking someone who doesn’t know TOOL to a TOOL concert is even better! I got to take my younger sister to Las Vegas to see them.
You are the first reviewer that listens to the song, or most of it, before commenting. I would love to see more people doing that. Give the audience a chance to hear the song as it is, and then go back and dissect. Well done.
Best way to describe seeing them live in person; stomped in the chest by the drums, shredded by the guitars, slapped in the brain by the lyrics, intense and freaking awesome doesn't do the experience justice. ❤🎉😮😊
6:29 - Beautifully said. The Persona is the mask we show the world and everything we had to shred off of the self to be acceptable gets deposited into the Shadow.
That tone in the beginning is indeed the bass guitar. A lot of factors go into getting that specific sound. Strings, guitar, amplifier, effect pedals, fingers vs picks vs slapping. It all plays in. Justin Chancellor is the bassist in Tool at this time and his tone is very sought after. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is one of the first songs he wrote with them.
I’ve been fortunate enough to see TOOL in concert Twice and both times they blew me away!! Maynard’s vocals mixed with Danny’s PHENOMENAL drumming was INCREDIBLE to watch & hear live & up close in person….if ever you get the opportunity I HIGHLY recommend catching them live!!! They will COMPLETELY ROCK your entire WORLD live!!!! 🎶❤️✌🏻
12:10 - That section you're talking about lines up very nicely with the switch from Albedo (Whitening/Purification) in which the impurities of the Stone are washed away to Citrintas (Yellowing/Drawing in Solar Light)
It's Jung + Drunvalo Melchizedek. D.M. has the theory that there are some humans with 44 total chromosomes, aboriginals and native tribes, that share in a common subjective experience. Connected through the Dreamtime, etc. We right now are at 46 total (Forty-four & 2) and have a sense of individuality but are cut off from the shared experience. At 48 total, D.M. hypothesizes that we will join a gestalt, having our individuality but full conscious access to the collective. The goal that D.M. is talking about requires full Jungian individuation (forming of the Philosopher's Stone) and to do THAT, you need to start with a piece of the void - a recognition of the Shadow. The Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin talks about the Omega Point, the advancement of the human noosphere to the point of shared consciousness. I think it's in The Phenomenon of Man.
i thought seeing pink floyd animals tour in 77 would be my forever fave concert until i saw the Aenema tour is Asbury Park... what a brilliant show and opening act were the Melvins. insane.
ohhh yes my fav music chan reacting to my favourite band is always a good time! You need to do more tool I just love ur reactions to them! You “get” them. You feel them & as a tool fan who always gets those music goosebumps too, I love to watch others EXPERIENCE tool & get that amazing feeling too! It’s an amazing connection. ❤🌀
Honestly, my favorite version of this (now that the original Tool version is permanently seared onto my heart) is the "Kids Cover" version on the O'Keefe Music Foundation channel. Those kids are so fcking impressive, they absolutely do it justice. I hope Tool got a chance to see it because I imagine it would be a huge compliment. You could tell all of those kids had talent and passion and so much potential. Watching them perform gave me hope, if that makes sense. Anyway, I recommend you check it out.
YESSS!!! I was JUST ABOUT to recommend that!!! I’ve been spreading the word to literally EVERY Tool reactor I watch, lol. I swear its by far my FAVORITE cover of 46 & 2 I’ve seen so far and i found them over 3 years ago.I have been following Kayla Rose since then. She’s really good!! And that DRUMMER is PHENOMENAL for his age in the video too!! 🎶❤️✌🏻
Two suggestions - the Grudge, Maynards vocal at the end, yes he pulled that of live many times. Not in recent years, the dude is in his 50s. Also, Invincible for something more current and because Justin pulls the sickest baseline ever. Cheers
11:03 - That instrumental right before the close is The Confrontation With Shadow, and in the BTS song ON... it's the same thing represented by the apocalyptic dance break. XD
The "tornado" means Spiral Out, a catchphrase unique to TOOL fans which basically means run with that train of thought and expand upon it i.e. by Spiralling Out. So when you're sitting there fully immersed in any one of TOOL's songs then just let yourself go and follow the lads down whatever rabbit hole they've opened up.That's a basic explanation, I'm sure others can, or have already, expand upon it.
6:07 - This is the root of the ancient alchemical phrase Jung uses: "In sterquiliniis invenitur" - in filth it will be found. Modern paraphrase is "the treasure you seek is behind the door you fear to open."
Danny Carey doesn't have a lot of post production done on his drums. Instead, he's got it tuned and mic'ed to high standards. Then the dynamic volumes come from his skill. You can hear his attention to it in his live performances
You have to listen to this album and Lateralus in its entirety. Also Prison Sex (which is a very dark and deeply personal song for Maynard) should be on the top of your list! Loving seeing you dive into their catalogue keep it up man
Imagine a time when you could turn on the radio and this song, or something from RATM, or Limp Bizkit, or Pearl Jam would just be playing. Better days.
I want to say again... pause rewind... reply as much as you like. I am hear for YOUR experience. I have been listening to this song since the 90's. You nailed it this is Jung all the way down.
Exactly!! Idk why people tell him not to pause so much. Isn’t this a ‘reaction’ video? He pauses, tells us his thoughts, pushes play and then pauses it again!! That’s what we are here for! Also, how tf does he know about philosophers such as Jung at his age? Wow.

Yes!!!! The harder you strike a drum the better it will sound especially in the context of rock drumming. When you hit the drum with the right angle the side of the drum stick will hit the rim of the drum at the same time the tip hits the drum head giving you the resonance of the wood shell and a heavier accent than merely striking the drum head/skin by itself. Danny is a VERY hard hitter. That combined with his skill and precision is a deadly combo. On the opposite side of the hard hitting rock drummer would be Jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette who's finesse and touch is black belt master level. I'll be seeing Danny playing with Beat in November
If we don't complete ourselves we will project that chaos/damage on the people around us. Incorporate the shadow self & use it to inform / drive / warn about the person you COULD be lest you become that monster. Balance is the way forward...

Actually we have 44 , 46 is the next step of evolution

No. We have 23. Multiply by 2.
23 pairs of chromosomes
YES. So many great tool songs but this one is My absolute favorites.
The fill after the break is one of the greatest fills of all time. The way it's recorded, it pans all around. Feels like they'd have had to have used 4 or 5 mics just for the toms.
Same. It will never fail to give me awesome feelings while listening.
Facts. 46 & 2 will shift around on the list of top Tool songs, but it MUST be on that list. Unequivocally.

The 46& 2 theory is not Carl Jung, but Drunvalo Melchizadek.
I've been listening to this song for over 20 years and it still gives me chills. It's easily one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
I have the same feeling about the song, and I don't believe it was released 20 years ago. It was released in 1996. I'm old.
Every member of the band are complete masters of their instruments!!!
Complete rock gods!!!
They truly speak to real human beings
Yes this song begins with bass guitar a lot of their songs do, bass of very strong part of this band. You're hearing it very well dude good job
I love when O'Keefe Music Foundation cover this one.... really worth to check it out!
This 👆🏼
it is an absolute gem, I love it. - Imma go listen to it again after this video - :D
I can't listen to that. I can't stand nasily singers and that girl singing is very nasily
Yesssss!! Those kids are amazing!!!
Agreed
Crazy that a song that's almost 30 years old still elicits this type of reaction. LOVE IT!
Bro. The fact that you were warned not to watch the videos on the first listen means you have some great people around you.

That 🌀 symbol is from their song Lateralus, it comes from the lyric “spiral out”
Hallelujah for you cause yes you did awesome letting it cook a bit before the first pause ...perfect timing.
