I love the old Winchesters but this video makes me appreciate my Marlin even more for it's simplicity.

John Browning was an absolute genius. You don't see anything mechanical with organic shapes like that anymore.

Been watching your videos for some time now, and I am amazed how well you explain everything, and show the tricks to assembly/ disassembly of all types of firearms. Thanks for presenting these videos, and I will watch as many as I can find.

Love this video, I’m glad I found it. It gave me more confidence in my own Chiappa lever action considering that some of my screws were loose after shooting and I was afraid that something was not up to parr. Thanks for making this video.

have you had any light primer strike issues with your gun? I recently picked up a new chiappa kodiak and with new grizzly manufactured ammo and the same brass reloaded, I have a had 3 in 20 light primer strikes. I have disassembled and stoned all the flat edges pertaining to the hammer and trigger group, Dont know yet if it will help.

Thank you for your service from an old dog face soldier. The Japanese Miroku is more or less a Winchester M71 chambered for .45-70. The lock works are totally different using coil springs. But fun to shoot no matter.

Great video. John Marlin must have read the "firearms design for dummies" book before designing the 336/1895 action because his model 1895 which also fires the 45-70 cartridge is FAR simpler than the Browning designed Winchester 1886 to work on. I am admittedly a mechanical dummie and prefer the Marlin 1895 because of this simplicity. A 6 year old could pull the bolt of a Marlin 1895, clean the bore from the breach end and put it back together in 5 minutes.

Marlin designed a fully enveloped receiver with a side ejected center bolt. He was head over heels ahead of any when it came to transition from black powder to smokeless

Love your historical tear downs for cleaning, they're the best thing since sliced bread!
It's hard not to admire these old Winchester rifles and their historical relevance in the last century.
Could I pick your brain, if you don't mind? What type of bluing did Winchester(& Co.) use to make the last generation Win 1894AE with forged receivers... early to mid 1980's without either of the safety mechanisms.
The bluing looks like powder coating, but its not. Any idea on the did solution?
    Thank
    I

  • @downeastgunworks
    @downeastgunworks  11 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes and No at the same time. Yes it's almost a scaled down 1886, but the 1892 has also been changed slightly to streamline manufacturing. You can disassemble them similarly. The 1982 came about due to the advent of smokeless cartridges. The old toggle link guns were considered inferior with the new powders then. But Winchester continued to produce the 1873 and 1876 for a while longer anyways. Browning designed the 1892 with smokeless powders in mind.

I looked all through TH-cam and the 1903 autopistol from Colt does not have a complete disassembly/reassembly video that I can find. Strange that after all this time, no one who knows how to do it right has posted a 'how to' . Plenty of 1911 vids, but not the 1903 'pocket pistol'.

So, if ones goal was to only remove the hammer can it be done by removing the hammer spring, taking out the hammer pivot/lower tang screw, lowering the lower tang and wiggling the hammer out the back
    or
Does the lever and locking blocks have to come out first.
I need to get the hammer out and button it back up until the hammer is repaired so the less I remove, the simpler the process..

I know the Winchester 1892 is described as a scaled down version of the 1886. How true is that, and would the field strip in this video be the same for the 92?

  • @Berniessen
    @Berniessen 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Very very nice video but long story short i brough a corpse of a 1886 and to get it back to working gun i needed many many many parts from all kind a guns,in the end i was smarter to left the project where it was but right now i am half way...I have almost all parts now except one spring that i get soon enough.
I brought a 1886 with 4 other Winchester guns in one buy they all had a price tag and 5 guns at ones made a great discount and the 1886 was cheap as it was but in a obsolete caliber so my though was jack a 45-70 barrel on it and sell it for a big money as a 45-70.........
Long story short the 86 was a big big big rip off and i brought it way to fast (i saw the price tag and put it aside with the idea great buy) but the tang was broken off behind the trigger and some tang fom another brand of gun was welded on that 1886 receiver............
The stock was changed so it met the newly welded on tang part.
With that tang and stock and missing the carrier holding spring no 1886 collector would look at the gun.
I needed to buy a 2th hand receiver (close to 900$ with shipping import fees) a good 45-70 barrel (close to 800$ in total) and a new hammer and loads more parts as screws and a carrier spring and a mag tube and mag tube spring and follower and and.
I took my 1886 apart like 50x time and i can tell from my experiance i would add lever and bolt outside the gun as 1 part and drop them in the receiver and then add carrier with carrier hook/linkage later and shove it all in............In my case it worked every time and much faster then try getting that pin in the lever/bolt.
My gun was missing the carrier hook/linkage and i could not find any original 1886 one so i brought 2x a Miroku copie with the idea if i fuck up one i always have a spare one (i am in the netherlands so parts getting in takes weeks) and i can tell U i got it working smooth as silk but it cost me a whole afternoon and cutting and welding but i took that gun apart last saterday like 20x and i advice people let bolt and carrier as 1 unit and add carrier later with the carrier hook/linkage combined.
I really really really dont like these guns i like all John Browning winchester guns except the 1886 and the reason is,its not a hard gun to understand but its a pretty precise gun in terms of wear...
The 1887 is much simpler (and has many flaws and wear spot too but i know them) the 1890 is a joy to work on the 1892 is sooooo sweet and mechanic friendly the 1893 is something u can wake me at night for and the 1894 is perfect hard to make a better gun that the 1894 and the 1895 is something i worked on only once so cant tell much about it and the 1897 u can blindflold me .....But a 1886 is always something.....cracked carrier, issues with the ejector....bad feeding.....hammers that dont stay fully cocked and and........

Where is the serial number located at on this gun. How do I find the manufacture date? My rifle will not cock it is seized. If I remove the but stock can I soak the lever and lock and block in a barrel in Penetrating oil?

hello Jim, I live in maine, im planning a black bear hunt.. my two rifles I have are a 30-30 and a .44 magnum carbine... I was told by a gunshop owner that these two calibers are not up to the task.. I was hoping you could give me your honest opinion.

30-30 will do the job with proper bullet placement. 44 mag possibly with proper bullet selection and bullet placement.

I note that you did not remove the forearm. I note that no one shows how to remove a Winchester "RIFLE' forearm- which tells me that none of you know how to do that. Most think they can and screw the gun up trying to get it off.

This videos title says you will show how to disassembly and reassembly this rifle....so why did you stop part way through the reassembly portion, without completely showing us step by step? By doing so, you have only partly help us out, not completely. I think, since this is a firearm, without being shown how it goes back together completely, is a dangerous error. If this beautiful rifle is not put back together properly, I'd think if it doesn't blow apart the next time it's fired, I'm quite sure at the very least it could damage it enough to make it no longer usable. I'll assume parts for this gem are hard to find and possibly even expensive to replace as well.
No disrespect Sir, but if you state you're showing us how to break it down, then put it back together again, you should show us every step, start to finish.
But, as always, that's just my opinion! :)))
