Exactly, this is what people who aren’t actors think acting is, like he planned what he was gonna do with his face or something. The best part about Joaquin is he has the freedom to act instinctively
Not really. Actors sometimes need techniques, even gimmicks to pull off great performances. Marlon Brando put some bread inside his mouth in order to have the look and accent he had in Godfather. Not all great performances come from "living in the moment" or method acting. Some are calculated and for the lack of a better word: acted.
Michael Jiang Zhu There’s quite a big difference between adding things to your body to make your character look a certain way or creating the physical life of your character than consciously deciding what faces to pull to portray a certain emotion. I think most actors would agree that if you’re consciously thinking about what emotion you’re “supposed” to be portraying, you’re not really acting you’re performing, because acting is experiencing what the character is experiencing in these situations
Michael Jiang Zhu I’m also not implying it doesn’t take any technique or planning to be instinctive. Pretty much all of the people who taught Stanislavsky’s acting methods: Meisner, Stella Adler (Brando’s teacher), Uda Hagen, Strasberg all teach that you do your emotional homework beforehand, and then when it’s time to do the scene you trust that the groundwork is there and live moment to moment, reacting off of impulses. If you want to cite Brando in The Godfather he is a perfect example of instinctive acting, considering he had the other actors hold cue cards so he didn’t know what his next line was until it came up

Joaquin Phoenix kind of reminds me of Keanu Reeves in that he's an actor whose widely liked by people and the internet especially. Whats made this similarity even more is that they were both affected deeply by the death of River Pheonix, with Joaquin being his brother obviously and Keanu being his best friend.

Keanu isn't really a critically acclaimed actor, but he has his role which is action movies and he's brought people a lot of joy with his roles over the years and is an exceptional human being.
He became one of my favorite actors out there after watching The Master and Her. I recently watched his joker teaser trailer. Oh boy, i was blown away by his legendary performance in a first scene when he drifted himself from a very sad facial expression to smile.
I showed my mom the Joker trailers, hype as I was, and she noted that Phoenix was playing the lead role. She then remarked something very interesting about him; she told me: "He's not afraid to be ugly, is he?", and that struck a chord with me. I think a lot of actors might focus on looking good on the big screen, but it takes a dedicated man to dig so deep. To get so far into their role that they cease to be themselves and allow themselves to become, if necessary, an ugly person. And I really had to agree with her insight.
And should have won for 'The Master' too. I mean, as much as we all love Daniel Day Lewis brilliant performance in 'Lincoln', Joaquin Phoenix was still genuinely far better than him that year.

River said " i'm a minor talent compared to my brother". Joaquin is the best actor. He is so magnetic, charismatic and haunting, fascinating. I'm obsessed with him since Walk the Line.
As a huge fan of Joaquin, this comment section is so nice to see! I didn't realize there were so many people who appreciated his work, and so many people who liked The Master! Also seeing love for Daniel Day Lewis and Phillip Seymour Hoffman; well deserved. Can't wait to see Joaquin as The Joker. If anyone's as incomparable as Heath Ledger, its Joaquin Phoenix. Perhaps I can learn to hold two Joker performances in my heart, in the same way that Mads Mikkelsen and Anthony Hopkins share the Best Hannibal Lecter award in my opinion :)
I've literally only seen 2 movies with Phoenix. Joker and Walk the Line. Both of which are amazing movies. I think it's safe to say that this guy is right about him being the best actor.
I'm very delighted to see this video; especially considering just how much effort Joaquin puts into his characters and has been snubbed several times. Considering his past, and the passing of his wonderful and talented brother River Phoenix; it's amazing how he was able to pull off Johnny Cash in Walk the Line which has striking similarities to his own personal life. The media scrutiny that surrounded River's death definitely left a mark of Joaquin, as is obvious with his defensive attitude towards media attention. I've been a fan of Joaquin ever since 8MM and he stole the show in that movie, in my opinion. Very glad he's getting the attention he so well deserves and hope to see what he pulls off with the new Joker movie.
I never thought much of Joaquin Phoenix before, I was more into actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Keaton, etc. But after hearing about him portraying the Joker in the upcoming solo movie, I looked more into Joaquin and his other films. Joaquin Phoenix is definitely an actor with dedication and passion to the art and he is a very influential performer who deserves more recognition.
His surname is really fitting as he rises from the ashes more time than I can count. His emotional range is immense and rightly so as he lived through many tragedies himself.
I think the reason I like him is he takes scripts seriously like he wants you to believe he’s the character. Sometimes when I watch these “ actors” I just see themselves. I respect that he takes his job seriously as an actor.
Seeing this makes me want to watch Joker again. Gosh, I first had a crush on him when he played Theodore in Her. But now seeing him in Joker makes me fall for his acting even more. You deserve the Academy Award, Joaq!
All these clips from The Master remind me how very much I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman, who, in my opinion, is the very greatest actor the US has ever produced. I so wish he was still with us.
yes you are probably right, but he never has show us that big spectrum of characters as JP. This is what makes JP just better., because we have much more to see - simple reflection with a little sorry that we have no more the possibility to see PS - and I PS dosn't sing johny cash for sure...no talent for the music, no voice and limited in the way blocked body, which is also very magnetic but .... I know, you tend to discuss about PS as intellectual actor, compering to any other...but let us talk about a emotions
To be fair there were some great lead performances that year and not everyone can get a nomination. I thought Oscar Isaac for inside llewyj Davis and Joaquin Phoenix for Her would have been nominated any other year.
As a movie, I'm Still Here is vaguely entertaining. As a piece of cryptic and bold performance art, I'm Still Here is an incredibly thought-provoking slice of acting history.
Now I recognize him; I knew he was the Joker but I couldn't remember what other movies I knew he was in. I watched a video essay about You Were Never Really Here a while ago and I loved it. He's a brilliant actor and does so much with every role he gets.
As a kid, I was mesmerized with his performance in the alien movie with Mel Gibson. He's just always so easy to watch because of his natural acting. Had no idea he would blow up this year because of Joker.
If Joaquin Phoenix can deliver a dark deep character like he's known for in the upcoming Joker(Which I'm confident he can and will) and survive the trip back to sanity he will be solidified a legend. Looking forward to it
I've seen Gladiator when I was young, but The Master is the film that got my attention. Never thought I would be so blown away with his magnificent performance on that film, I started to think if he really had himself real high for it😅
Me. Ever since Gladiator. I know that’s not a day 1 follower but I am really just magnetized by his performances. Also I’ve seen Joker and I still think his no. 1 best performance was Freddie in The Master. But Arthur in Joker is a VERY close second

Can’t wait to finally see him as The Joker next year
Audience remembers roles not Oscars. He is brilliant at what he does.
I loved his “you were never really here” Absolute masterpiece.
So underrated. From Gladiator, Signs, Johnny Cash and list goes on.
He's got a face which can change identities so much an so well
Who is here after his role as Joker
I can't believe you just said something from my heart about the great actor in a span of about 5 minutes. Thank you
SO GLAD you did this before the release of Joker
Joaquin was deprived of an Oscar for "The Master".
Emmy Elijah well, he was up against Day-Lewis for Lincoln. :)
He wasn't even nominated last year for You were never really here, the Oscars are crap...
yes!
It's like you predicted his performance in Joker! He's amazing!
Sanchez Punchez Maybe DC watches this guy's videos considering Pattinson was casted as Batman
Love this actor.
Actually the long overdue Oscar does not deserve him.
He’s just the BEST actor you’ll never change my mind 😩👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Master was a Masterpiece.
He has deserved an Oscar for years. I really hope his portrayal of the Joker finally gets him one.
People ask: "how is it that every character he portrays he becomes a different person?"
Well, isn't that what a good actor should do?
Joaquin and Phil were the dream team
damn that heroin
How many more great performances he could have given made me so sad. RIP
yeah, his performance in synecdoche was one of the best of the 21st century imo
He didn't even get an oscar nom in her, he was amazing in that film and the film itself was also amazing, in every way. One of the greatest ever made.
To be fair there were some great lead performances that year and not everyone can get a nomination. I thought Oscar Isaac for inside llewyj Davis and Joaquin Phoenix for Her would have been nominated any other year.
Phoenix + joker = Oscar.
It's so good to see that this video was released before joker
Like his Jokers slight eyebrow raise. Brilliant.
Joaquin Phoenix, Daniel Day-Lewis, Willem Dafoe
The three GODS in acting.
As a movie, I'm Still Here is vaguely entertaining. As a piece of cryptic and bold performance art, I'm Still Here is an incredibly thought-provoking slice of acting history.
Him as the Joker. Its gonna be so good.
congratulations he is now the joker
Now I recognize him; I knew he was the Joker but I couldn't remember what other movies I knew he was in. I watched a video essay about You Were Never Really Here a while ago and I loved it. He's a brilliant actor and does so much with every role he gets.
As a kid, I was mesmerized with his performance in the alien movie with Mel Gibson. He's just always so easy to watch because of his natural acting. Had no idea he would blow up this year because of Joker.
Joaquin Phoenix now Oscar award winning actor, I'm glad he finally got an award for his acting efforts.
If Joaquin Phoenix can deliver a dark deep character like he's known for in the upcoming Joker(Which I'm confident he can and will) and survive the trip back to sanity he will be solidified a legend. Looking forward to it
i saw it today , it really is a perfomance of a lifetime.. incredible acting!
Joaquin phoenix is truly outstanding. His brother, river, was also hella talented.👏🏻
Who was a fan before 'Joker'?
mee
You Were Never Really Here, also a great movie. Though Joker is a masterpiece!
Unfortunately not me but after seeing joker I want to have a marathon of watching his other movies
dude thank you so much for clarifying what that documentary was and that interview. I sadly knew nothing about them and all i heard was "yeah he seems nuts" from people around me. Never took their comments seriously because i knew nothing, and it's great to know it was good to not judge so quickly. Need to check out some of his work, seems like a cool dude and i'm excited to see his take on the Joker :)
