I just wanted to let you know people are still being helped out by your video six years after its original upload date. I have just upgraded my x240 with a backlit keyboard and a new click pad, and I never would have without this video to guide me. Thank you for your video!!
I did IT for 37 years and am sailing remotely on my boat. Got a look at a couple videos and you sir have done a good job of replacing the keyboard on an x240. Nice job.
Part of my Keyboard on my trusty x240 stopped working - found this video and realised that these guys were only a 25min train ride away from London! Took them less than an hour to replace. One happy customer :)
Due to spilling coffee on my laptop (oops) I was forced to look for a way to replace the keyboard. I've never replaced a laptop keyboard before so I thought given the trickiness of this laptop I would find it hard. This video, however really made it easy for me. All sorted - thank you very much.
Thanks for the great tutorial. Let me share my advice on this after following your step by step guide. 1, At 14:20 when you pull out the ribbon cable, first you need to release it by gently pulling slightly out the small 2 black ear on the sides of the socket. Then you can easily pull out the cable as nothing holds it in the socket. 2, The thin ribbon cable doesn't have to go underneath the wide one from 20:16 The latest replacement keyboard comes with the wide ribbon cable glued to the board so instead of tearing it up, you can just lay the thin ribbon cable on the top of it.
I'm glad this video is still around. I follow this guide step by step keyboard replacement for lenovo thinkcentre x240. Finally it's works. My client was satisfied. Thank you for this video.
I never post comments, however this video has inspired me. THANK YOU! You are a wizard! This video literally saved my life and made replacing a keyboard painless. Kudos!
Just wanted to complement you on your demo skills. Very clear, without being overly verbose. Lots of good tips and warnings against possible snafus. You made it look very do-able ...even though it nuts! I watched just for the beginning - as I only wanted to upgrade the disk, but I watched it all anyway!! BTW, I've changed the keyboard of my old X230 and it was a complete picnic by comparison.
you sir, are a steely eyed missile man. just finished swapping out the keyboard on my x250. worked a dream, took me about 50 mins all in all. thank you very much
MANY THANKS - TOO COMPLICATED FOR THIS OLD GUY. I refurbish old laptops and donate them to charity. I found a simple solution to this problem. I simply bought a separate USB keyboard [ for about 6GBP ] and donated that as well. Worked beautifully ! The cost of replacing the X240 keyboard was much more than this and the replacement procedeure would have been a nightmare for me.
Thanks! Did not realize how pain in the rear just to change the keyboard until saw this video. Ordered the 'backlit' keyboard to replace current one on my X250. Everything was okay until I put everything back together to boot up the PC. Dead... Nothing... I had to Unplug the AC power, external battery, reopen the device, remove RAM, and disconnect the internal battery for hard reset. Held down my power for 20 seconds. Connected the AC power and the laptop powered back up! Put the RAM back in to the laptop, connect the battery, cover, and external battery back. Reboot! Good as new! No driver update required for me. Once again Thanks!
Great vid - I'm at 14:30 - the trackpad ribbon cable is held in by a black clip which slides away from the plug along the plane of the ribbon cable - it needs eased out one side at a time. Most ribbon cables which don't plug in have either a clip which slides out (as is the case here), a clip which hinges (like the keyboard cable) - both are zero insertion force - or require pressure to insert & remove. Cables in the latter category almost always have a rigid plastic flap parallel to the cable itself and pointing away from the connector. This can be held firmly with needle-nosed pliers to insert & remove the cable from its connector.
That was super helpful, just replaced my keyboard with a backlit one. Thanks to your video, it was no hassle at all. Very thoughtful commentating, little helpful tips. Only thing that was mildly irritating was the video quality. Still, I am grateful.
First i was shocked by the video lenght. Then i watch directly in the middle and the reason just appear itself to me. These computer are way to compact to make them easy to fix. Good job to you.
Glad this video is still around. I am re-furbing an old X260 with Linux (works great). I can confirm not only that the replacement procedure is almost identical for the X260, but a bit easier as you don't have the troublesome ribbon cable for the touch-pad. Many thanks
Thank you. I would have never dared to go through all this without your tutorial. Now I've changed a QWERTZ keyboard for a backlit QWERTY one and everything goes perfect. It took me around an hour or so but it was due to me being extra careful and watching twice or more what I had to do next.
Thank you so much - I just 'revived' an old X240 thanks to your impeccably well put together video. Took me a bit, but you laid it all out nicely. Typing this on my new keyboard :-)
This is an excellent video! I know very little about repairing computer hardware problems, but thanks to this video, I was able to replace the defective keyboard in my X240. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Thank you for this excellent guide! I've just replaced my keyboard following this. Tip for the sticky ribbons: use a hairdryer to loosen up the adhesive, it then won't damage the silver ribbon.
Thank you very much for your elaborate video! With it I successfully replaced my keyboard, upgraded my screen to FHD and fitted an internal battery. Almost everything was the same, except for the extra ribbon(s) which were glued to the bottom of your keyboard and missing on my Thinkpad X250. Many thanks!
Major PITA but slow, steady and following your instructions I've managed two of them now. Thanks for the help. Great video. FYI, The trackpad connector to the left of the machine has small black tabs to the right of the connector. If you catch the tab with your screwdriver and slide it to the right, it opens that connector and the ribbon cable can be removed and replaced easily.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH I just replaced the keyboard on my x240 with your guide and it works just fine, you did save some time and money with this tutorial, cheers bud.
Thanks for putting this up for us. Was able to change the keyboard on an X260. It took a bit more wiggling and slow cajoling to get the motherboard to release from the plastic shield for some reason. But good news is that the connector for the touchpad is not covered by another tape and only has a small area of adhesive to pull off and re-attach.
Dude, you're a life saver for posting this video. Mucho Gracias. What happened to the days of unscreweing 3 screws and popping out a keyboard huh, someone @ Lenovo needs a serious ass whooping designing this model.
Excellent video! But what a rubish, in the X230 it only took 3 minutes to replace a keyboard, I hope Lenovo will go back to that setup. Thanks for the vid! Will help in the future!
Thanks again for this video. Had to change our MDs laptop from the a US to a Swedish. Helped when I needed to do it on a X240 and now when I upgraded him to a X250. Yes, the X240 is EXACTLY the same as a X250. Even the year number on the mobo is the same, 2013.
Marius du Plessis Hi Marius! That's very interesting. So the replacement process would be exactly the same for the X250? If so, I will add that model to the title :)
Yup, exactly the same. I had the two units side by side, doing both step by step, following your video. Thought mine didn't have the ribbon cable that went to the left and I we have smart card readers. But all the connectors were there.
Worked perfectly on x250. Seemed to be a bit less glue around... Also, the track point cable (right most ribbon) is a bit taught, so make sure to pull a bit of slack or doesn't connect / work properly. Great video, thanks
I have to salute you ! you are just amazingly calm and right tech.I am just frozen to understand the complexity of laptop repair.you definitely need training* to repair laptop
Hi there, didn't catch your name. I just wanted to say, like everyone else, what a great video. Excellent detail. I found it soooooooooo helpful. Thank you a million times.
DUDE, you're a lifesaver! I've been looking around and found your video. Thanks for being so detailed bro! Much love all the way from Houston, TX U.S.A.
Alternative for changing US to UK keyboard: get the very few different keys with the right connectors (on eBay individually or from a non working keyboard that will cost very little, ones that are identical in every way from same series). See online videos of safely popping keys off and putting the replacements on. Then set keyboard layout to UK in the software. I've done this with a Swedish to UK change, no big tear down then needed with all the risks of doing that. Great video for if you've got a faulty keyboard of course - thanks guys
Great Review, Just a side note - may prove useful to others. Connector on far left, for the FingerPrint, is to be open/inserted by pulling the locking mechanism - black band below the white top. Once pulled - you can easily insert/remove without force. Locking is by pushing black entry back, which locks cable in place.
Many thanks for this - got the backlight keyboard changed no bother for a anti microbial keyboard on a refurbed x240. Word to the wise - if your laptop has a fingerprint scanner DONT lift the laptop away from the screen as per the instructions here as the plastic is very weak and will snap around the scanner (like mine did). Instead put something to protect the screen as the start. Not a big deal for me as it’s an old cheap machine mainly on the dock but still worth noting as a new top case isn’t particularly cheap.
Thanks, saved us from having to buy a new computer...for now. And someone else tip to use a hair dryer to heat up/loosen the adhesive with all those ribbon cables helped a lot.
Great video. Used it yesterday to replace regular keyboard to one with highlight. BTW: not sure if anyone told that already but this ribbon with nothing connected to it is probably for models that have fingerprint reader in different location. Cheers.
Geez, during t60, x61 days, it will only take me 5 to 10 minutes for replacing a keyboard from an onsite client. What happened Lenovo? Great video by the way!
The "weird little connector" at 14:25 can be released by pushing the two black plastic bits outwards, which will release the ribbon cable and allow you to reseat it much more easily
Thanks for creating this video. I have an X260 on which the spacebar doesn't always register when pressed. I was thinking about changing the keyboard, but after watching your video and seeing how complicated it is to do so, I think I'm just going to leave it (or pay someone else to do it).
Great Video :) Made my day, when i had to change a keyboard on one of our laptops :) Did take like 45 min and a lot of sweat :D i works perfect! Thanks!
Great video, Thanks! Painstaking process to swap a simple keyboard on this model though(took a page from Apples book) can't wait until I have to do it over and over to make an extra $10 a machine...Looks like it will be much easier just swapping keys if they are just worn out and not broken/non-functioning.
What a fasincating video. And so nice and clear as to what you're doing (visually at least as the sound is a little low) I WAS thinking of removing the keyboard for a project, but I now think I'd leave it in place! (My idea is / was to place the screen OVER the keyboard area, and convert it into a psuedo all in one / tablet with usb / bluetooth keyboard ... but that also depends on how 'flexible' the LCD cable is re positioning. Might also be possible to attach the LCD to the base ... although that would possible hinder the fan air intake)
Excellent guide, thank you very much! You helped me to replace the keyboard on my X250 to a backlit keyboard in my language. It is really not that hard (of course, much more work then on x230), just need to carefully do all the steps. The hardest part is indeed the ribbons, especially the long one that goes from the left side to the right side near the internal battery. I wonder what does cable does, and what can be connected to it? Maybe an NFC module? Would be nice to know, perhaps somebody managed to figure this out? And be careful when you remove the bottom base, it really feels like something that can brake easily. Funny how Lenovo did this. Anyway, the X250 is the best notebook out there considering the price and what you get, just make sure you get one with IPS display. Once again, many thanks for this great tutorial!
Thanks a lot for this video. I've got a X200, a X201 and a X230, and so far I've replaced (among other parts) the keyboard on each of them. Now after watching this, I'm completely sure that I won't ever buy a X240. Let's hope the X250 will be sane again.
X201(T) seems like the last good X Thinkpad, everything after that is more and more bad. X220 ditched leds, X230 introduced the horrible clickpad-syle touchpad, X240 is hard to service and has only one (max 8GB) RAM slot, and so on. My nest laptop after X230 will probably be a Dell latitude, HP ellitebook or something like that.
@@selforganisation x240 and x250 were some horrible laptops. Just horrible. Screen bezel is a joke, the lcd connector problems, the 2 battery config which often fail, every thing is just assembled in a very flimsy fashion.
Thanks, very useful tutorial. I just ordered a backlit keyboard and will install it with the help of your vid. Prolly I’m gonna flash a modified bios as well to use an ax200 wifi card.
Great guide. I would've been lost without it. Luckily I bought the keyboard first and only after realized how complicated it is to swap it. If I knew beforehand I would have stuck with the awkward Swedish layout. My model didn't have the 2 strips glued to the back of the keyboard so it was a little easier, but not by much :(
OMG what a fucking pain ! I purchased 50 pieces with the wrong language and have now 50 keyboards to swap !! I thought it was as "simple" as on T440/T450 since they share the same gen but Lenovo won the crown on this model. Anyway thanks for the video.
Great video, I found this very helpful, I did have a slightly different ribbon cable from my track pad on my X260, but found it very easy to do with the excellent step by step guide.
Great Tutorial. It helped me swap the ABNT2 keyboard that comes default with Lenovos sold in Brazil with the US keyboard. Thanks! BTW I swapped the keyboard on a X250.
Thanks! Couldn't have done it without this video. My results weren't 100% though. My TrackPoint no longer works. Tried switching back to the old keyboard, and it doesn't work anymore either. I've checked the bios setting, updated drivers, and reinstalled the keyboard. I can't see any visible damage to the ribbons and I'm pretty sure it's all back together right. Have you run into this? Any ideas? Thanks again, Joe
i had the same problem about TrackPoint and also i was thinking that i damaged the ribbons or something, but the problem was solved ten i entered device manager deleted both the keyboard drivers and mouse drivers together and after two restarts it started working together with backlit (i had the keyboard with no backlit before).
Awesome video. Thanks! I am planning on replacing the touchpad on my x240 (with one with the clickpad). Is the process almost the same? Do you still have to flip the motherboard? I would really appreciate it if you could provide some details. Thank you in advance!
Very nice vid!! I am not sure if this is dumb question, but our IT guy told me that I need to open the entire Thinkpad even if I just need to replace a single key. I just want to check and see if something got stuck under the right shift key cause it seems not to spring up completely. Thanks
+Alfrancis COC Sounds to me like he just couldn't be bothered to check it for you :p The back of the keyboard is sealed with plastic. There would be no advantage to removing the keyboard from the laptop to check underneath one key. This can be done with the laptop assembled.
You call that "easy"? Seriously??? That's insanely complicated, and takes a considerable amount of time too. On top of everything else, it looks very easy to damage/ruin something to make re-assembly a nightmare (or worse still - impossible). It's definitely not something I would want to attempt to do with my X260. Are you in London (or close to London)? If so, I'd be willing to pay you to change my keyboard. The space-bar doesn't always register when pressed. If this is something you'd be willing to take on, please let me know your price.
Hi Andy, sorry to hear you have a completely different experience. Yes, it was a time consuming exercise, but still the video guide allowed me to do exactly the same on my X260. Unfortunately, I don't live in or close to London (located in the Netherlands), so I hope you will find somebody else to help you with this. Good luck!

It made my day. Stuck in a foreign country I made it myself with this video. Millions of thanks.
Still using this tutorial in 2024. thanks so much!
I never post comments, however this video has inspired me. THANK YOU! You are a wizard! This video literally saved my life and made replacing a keyboard painless. Kudos!
+Kenneth Jacobs Really glad I was able to help :)

I used to be a computer tech and I’m blown away between how easy the T series is to the X. Thanks for this video it saved my butt haha
First i was shocked by the video lenght. Then i watch directly in the middle and the reason just appear itself to me. These computer are way to compact to make them easy to fix. Good job to you.

Best tutorial ever! KB changed without any problems. (batt connector was foregot under kb, but due to remark was found)
Thank you for this excellent guide! I've just replaced my keyboard following this.
Tip for the sticky ribbons: use a hairdryer to loosen up the adhesive, it then won't damage the silver ribbon.
YOU ARE A LEGEND! I had not chance of doing this without this video, very well done for figuring it out!
Thank you very much for your elaborate video! With it I successfully replaced my keyboard, upgraded my screen to FHD and fitted an internal battery. THANK YOU VERY MUCH
I just replaced the keyboard on my x240 with your guide and it works just fine, you did save some time and money with this tutorial, cheers bud.
She's alive!!! Thanks for this guide! :)
Greatings from Germany! I've repaired my x240 with your excellent manual. Thanks a lot!
Just swapped a X240 keyboard, only lost one screw :) Many many thanks for this vid, never would have been able to do the job without it.

Brilliant video that saved me forking out £500 on a new laptop. Very easy to do thanks to your video
Thank you so much!!!! Without your video, I could not change keyboard. Pdf manual was not useful for me.
Thank you for this video. We would have been lost without it.
Thanks for the video! With the help of it, I successfully changed an AZERTY keyboard to a QWERTY backlit keyboard on my LENOVO X250.
Dude, you're a life saver for posting this video. Mucho Gracias. What happened to the days of unscreweing 3 screws and popping out a keyboard huh, someone @ Lenovo needs a serious ass whooping designing this model.
Replaced my X250 keyboard. Thank you for the detailed video. Flipping over the MoBo was nifty!
Excellent video! But what a rubish, in the X230 it only took 3 minutes to replace a keyboard, I hope Lenovo will go back to that setup.

Thank you so much. Fixed my daughter's laptop with this video guide.
Thanks! Your great tutorial still going strong in 2021 my man. Used this today to swap the non-backlit keyboard of my X240 for a backlit one.
Thanks a lot for this video. I didnt expect it to take a lot of effort when my Boss asked me about this.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Without your help I never would have dared to do it! Works perfectly fine! Greetings from Germany!
I have to salute you ! you are just amazingly calm and right tech.I am just frozen to understand the complexity of laptop repair.you definitely need training* to repair laptop
This is video is a fantastic work. Couldn't have done the kbd replacment without this video. Thanks a lot.
Thanks. Worked a treat. I wouldn't have dared to try without your video. Very clearly explained.
+Mark Evans Thanks Mark. Really really glad I was able to help!
Hi there, didn't catch your name. I just wanted to say, like everyone else, what a great video. Excellent detail. I found it soooooooooo helpful. Thank you a million times.
Congratulations from Brazil, you help me a lot to solve this problem, your tips are very important. Thank you for sharing with us.
DUDE, you're a lifesaver! I've been looking around and found your video. Thanks for being so detailed bro! Much love all the way from Houston, TX U.S.A.
Really glad it helped you out Melvin!! Much love back at ya from the UK! :)
Thanks for making this. I got tired of trying to find the right key so I bought a whole keyboard....wasn't too bad to replace!
I replaced the palmrest on my x240 with one from an x250 (00HT390). Could not have done it without your tutorial. Thanks!

Great Review,
Just a side note - may prove useful to others.
Connector on far left, for the FingerPrint, is to be open/inserted by pulling the locking mechanism - black band below the white top.
Once pulled - you can easily insert/remove without force.
Locking is by pushing black entry back, which locks cable in place.

Just replaced my keyboard using your video. Great job and thank you so much!
Thanks, saved us from having to buy a new computer...for now. And someone else tip to use a hair dryer to heat up/loosen the adhesive with all those ribbon cables helped a lot.
Thanks mate, just changed my x240 SWE keyboard to UK LED one, top banana!! Well done.
Great video. Used it yesterday to replace regular keyboard to one with highlight. BTW: not sure if anyone told that already but this ribbon with nothing connected to it is probably for models that have fingerprint reader in different location. Cheers.
Awesome video man! I couldn't have done (or dared) change the keyboard myself without your help! Absolutely brilliant!

Glad we could help you out! :)
Very useful video, thanks. You helped me breath new life into my X240.
Super job. I have just successfully changed the keyboard and this tutorial helped a lot.
Thanks a lot for this video.
I've got a X200, a X201 and a X230, and so far I've replaced (among other parts) the keyboard on each of them.
Now after watching this, I'm completely sure that I won't ever buy a X240. Let's hope the X250 will be sane again.
Markus Weller X250 is EXACTLY the same, even the mobo year number. I just had to move a swedish keyboard from an older X240 to a newer X250.
Watch the Lenovo X270 video on youtube. It looks the same from inside.
Thank you very much for the guide!! Just replaced an X270 Keyboard without any problems at all!!!
Another success story here. Changed out the keyboard, ram and added an ssd and now my mum has a convenient portable laptop.
Thank you so much for the clear instructions. With your help I could easily replace the keyboard on my X260 with a backlit one.
haha, can't believe how complicated they made it to swap out a keyboard.
At least they made it so that you can change it. Can't do that with a MacBook Pro
@@selforganisation x240 and x250 were some horrible laptops. Just horrible. Screen bezel is a joke, the lcd connector problems, the 2 battery config which often fail, every thing is just assembled in a very flimsy fashion.
me neither.. this is ridiculous... I'm not doing that.. not worth it.
Thanks, very useful tutorial. I just ordered a backlit keyboard and will install it with the help of your vid. Prolly I’m gonna flash a modified bios as well to use an ax200 wifi card.
Thank you very much! You saved my wife's laptop!
Enjoy :-D
The pain from this comment is outstanding.
Thanks! BTW I swapped the keyboard on a X250.
forgot to say a big thanks for the video ... great explanation! :)
and nine years later, thank you very much
Thanks very much!!! Excelent tutorial. Helped me to save a lot of money. Thanks again.
Thank you VERY much for this video! What a crazy irritating design making it so difficult to replace a keyboard!
I do want a backlit US keyboard for my x240. After watching this video, I started to like the ISO non-backlit keyboard :)
Thanks a lot for the video, although recorded with a potato - it helped me through the process! Best regards from Denmark.
Haha! Sorry for the video quality... It's all we had at the time :)
A very good guide, BUT always observe and adhere to ESD procedures by wearing anti-static wrist band and work on anti-static earthed mat.
Great video, making the keyboard replacement on my X260 easy peasy!
Good luck!
Your video was really helpful. Thanks for your effort to make this video. Well done.
