The lead singer, Justin Hayward, wrote this when he was 19. He is 77 and still on tour! I will see him live again in June! His voice is still as beautiful and compelling as EVER!! And your reaction to Rays flute is so charming!! Thank you!!
I went to two UK concerts in March (2024) and Justin was AMAZING
Every member of the Moody Blues was so talented and could play multiple instruments. Studio albums they didn't need a backup orchestra, they could produce an orchestra themselves.
I first heard the Moodies in 1968. I was blown away, as I was by the group Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears. The orchestral sound, the horns. WOW! I did a hitch in the USMC, and had myself together in 1973, upon my discharge. Saw the Moodies in 1974. Saw them again in 1977 and 1980. All the concerts were, as you noticed, heralded by the audience being silent as they performed. It was magical. Still is. Music such as they made will never grow tired or get old. Neither will it ever be composed to their level again. I am so pleased to have grown in an era which had such marvelous musicians. Thank you for your review.

"Days of future passed" was an album with a lot of orchestral back up. You would enjoy it.
"Nights In White Satin" is their most famous song. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once. Sadly Ray Thomas their flute player & singer passed away in 2018 & their drummer Graeme Edge passed away in 2021.

Mike Pinder the founder of the group and keyboard player just passed a couple of days ago. He was the one who came up with these arrangements. Once they did this they found their sound and created a whole genre.

The main force in the group behind the rich orchestral and cosmic texture in their music within the seven core albums, was Mike Pinder, co-founder of the band, keyboard player and songwriter (who left the band in the late 70s, way before this concert) just passed away a week ago. Mike's transcendent soul and creativity was the life-force behind the Moody Blues. He's up there with the great classical composers. RIP on your journey, Mike!
Pinder passed away very recently, on April 24. Ray Thomas (flute) and Graeme Edge (drums) also passed in recent years

This is originally a very old song, from the 1960s. Moody Blues were one of the first groups to fuse rock with orchestration.

4:54 Apologies if you've already done it but if you love the Flute then Jethro Tull is a must, the pinnacle! There was no such thing as Folk Rock until Ian Anderson decided there should be! Almost on a whim he became one of the world's greatest flautists. Their live performances are amazing! A bunch of amazing musicians just having a great time! I challenge anybody to hold back a smile

I saw them in 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987 and 1992. Never a wrong note and the emotional response was there everytime. Awesome band.

Everyone has their opinion about which is the best version of this song and whether it's a live version or a studio version, I like them all, but this for me is the very best of the best. It's a mature sound and along with the amazing orchestra brings out the fullness of the piece. This song is from my youth, I'm 70 years old, so I've listened to it many, many times over the years and also though I've heard many other songs from these guys, this is by far my favorite and also my favorite performance. You're right. This was in 2018. They first sang this song in the early 1970s. His voice has aged so well.
I've grown up with these guys, and his voice hasn't changed one pitch.
I've been listening to this song since 1972. It never gets old. My favorite album of theirs is "Days of Future Past". It is a whole operetta. Glad you enjoyed them. His voice is as strong and true as it was in the 70s. Good reaction.

During the same concert the Moody Blues sang "Question" which is must hear.
If you like the flute you may like Jethro Tull. They have plenty of flute music. They are/were a progressive rock band. Their best album, IMO, is Thick as a Brick. It was done tongue-in-cheek but is so good.
Thick as a Brick is quite good, but my personal favorite, probably because I grew up on it, is the album Aqualung. It's another concept abum and is about religion and society. Regardless, if you like flute, you have to give Jethro Tull a listen.

When they are on tour, they send their music ahead. I live in a southern Indiana town, and we have a great philharmonic orchestra. They backed the Moody Blues very professionally. I rank it as one of the best concerts I have seen.

I am an old codger and have been a fan of the Moody Blues since their hit with a cover of the Motown classic Go Now. At that time, Denny Laine was the lead singer, and Clint Warwick was the bassist. Justin Hayward replaced Denny Laine as lead singer, and John Lodge replaced Clint Warwick as bassist in 1966, and the music of the band changed from a Blues inspired format to an orchestral, psychedelic form. This song is from the album Days Of Future Passed, which was released in 1967. The album is a concept album and is a day as well as a life of a normal person. The album was recorded with Peter Knight and the London Symphony Orchestra. The Moody Blues were the first rock band to record with a symphony orchestra and also the first band to incorporate a Mellatron. The Mellatron was an instrument that could record sounds on a loop and play them back, enabling the band to have the sound of an orchestra on stage with them as well as other sounds. Mike Pinder was the keyboardist and played the Mellatron and recently passed away at age 82. I was fortunate enough to see the band live many times between 1972 and 1978. I saw them several times performing with symphony orchestras, which was always a special treat. I lost interest after they replaced Mike Pinder with the flashy, less talented (in my opinion) Patrick Moraz in 1978. The music changed direction without the influence of Mike Pinder, who was a major influence in the direction of their earlier sounds that I loved. You should listen to the entire Days Of Future Passed album. The entire album is a masterpiece, and it was one of the three rock albums that were most influential in the direction of music today, along with the Beatles Sargeant Peppers Lonley Hearts Club Band and the Beach Boys Pet Sounds. All three albums were released in 1967, and all were way ahead of their time.

Justin did this to us in the 60s. These Moody Blues augmentations were totally unexpected from a rock band. I believe this song even had a monolog in the after song orchestration. This additional effort gave people a greater appreciation for the entire work and not just the edited 3 minute AM monaural pop radio version. FM stations without the same restrictions played the longer album cuts. This elevated the listening experience led to a boost in sales of stereo systems. The long play versions were enjoyed in millions of homes. I would guess that Justin was still at 80 plus percent of his peak when this concert was recorded. We were all surprised when the Moody Blues started releasing new music in the mid-80s. It was as though they had never left. e.g. YOUR WILDEST DREAMS, and it's sequel. I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE.

This song was originally released in 1967 and his voice sounds nearly exact to what it did back then. I remember this song as a kid, one of my favorites. Also, in the released version there is a poem read at the end, its well worth watching the video from then with the full song and poem, "Breath deep, the gathering gloom..."
This song was part of the concept album Days of Future Passed, released in 1967. It chronicles the different parts of a day in the life of Everyman. I listened to this album endlessly growing up.

Justin Hayward is one of those very rare singers whose voice ages like fine wine. He sounds as good in this performance as he did when it was released in the studio so many years ago. I've heard that called a voice break, in country singing anyways, and it's really cool. Of course, there can be "breaks" in the voice that aren't intentional, like when a guy hits puberty, but that's not the same thing. In country, and wherever it's used, it's intentional. A timeless classic spanning decades and ALL generations! If this doesn't "touch you" (or anyone) nothing would. The way Justin sings "'Cause I love you" will haunt me and bring me peace and warmth and love forever! I heard this song as a child and it hit my soul immediately with goose bumps! When I saw this dropped in I was a bit worried because this is close to my heart (for many reasons) its very deep Bisscute, and for your own journey I guarantee you might come back to this one day in the future when you have room for a deeper love
The instrument that always gets me is the violin, and a full piano. Maybe it is my love of classical music, and that I used to play the violin, and wish that I had never stopped, but that type of sounds always goes right to my soul.

I've seen the Moody Blues in concert three times. The first in the mid 80's, the last in 1996. Each time with a full backing orchestra and always amazing.
When I was a little boy, this song scared me because of the haunting sound… as I grew older, I fell in love with it… and that feeling remains today. One of my favorite songs ever.

An incredible band, augmented by a full Symphony Orchestra in one of the best songs ever. This song was the climax of the classic, concept album, Days of Futures Past. They had a full orchestra on that ground breaking album in 1967 and was the first of 7 albums in a row from 1967 - 1972 that is one of the great runs in the Rock Era. Like Prog Rock to come, their albums were composed to be heard in their entirety, even if a bunch of individual songs, they flowed together and each album is an incredible music statement, up there with the best bands of the era. When we tripped back in the 70s, we always had Pink Floyd and King Crimson on at some point but we also had the Moody Blues in frequent rotation. Try Legend of a Mind next, their ode to LSD guru Timothy Leary. Great stuff, they will freak you out at how great they were if given a chance. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎤🎸🎶

Lots to check with the art-rock group, Moody Blues. Charted records for over 20 years. The last original member, Mike Pinder, passed away a few days ago. Justin Hayward and John Lodge joined a short time after the band was formed. Ray Thomas was the flutist. On the original album there was a poem read (Late Lament) near the end of the song. In this video the orchestra played the ending without the poem. The song's final note on the album was struck with a gong! pretty cool. 😎
I've read through a lot of the other comments and for some reason, I like songs of there that were not mentioned by other commenters. "Your Wildest Dreams" and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" are my two favorite songs of theirs, Nights In White Satin coming in at #3. I'm glad you liked them as much as so many of us out here do as well.
This is a beautiful song from my teens and this is a great version of it. There is a really long version with poetry in it. Great reaction Lady Biss, you were looking as beautiful as the song and your hair was so stunning.

I enjoyed your reaction and comments to this song. I'm happy that you liked it so much. Moody Blues released a lot of great tunes in their career, most of which I believe you would enjoy. This song was featured on their 1967 album, Days of Future Past, with the help of The London Festival Orchestra. It is one of the earliest true concept albums with the first tune being 'The Day Begins' and the final track being 'The Night' (aka, Nights in White Satin). It's a phenomenal album that I've enjoyed for nearly 50 years. It's a great album that deserves a listen whenever you have time to sit back and relax. Cheers!
this album is a must to be listened to end to end. it is their first of 7 concept albums in a row. they have 16 total studio albums. any of the 8 or so solo albums by the singer will give you a good idea of how his voice was one of the most recognizable male voices back ion the day
