There's a really lovely story behind Bobs fame too, he was a Solicitor and went to see a comedy act one night in London, loved the act and became a huge fan, the act was an interactive one where random people could actually be part of the show and Bob became a regular on stage member of the show, the main act was a man called Vic Reeves (real name Jim Moir) and Vic and Bob 'clicked' and went on to become one of the UK's most beloved comedy double acts, it would be lovely to see you react to some of Vic and Bobs comedy sometime too, but be warned, it's absolutely bonkers!
A quick Google shows Steve Bytheway as a company director in Bob's home town of Middlesborough, and Bob's other friend Harry Harriman was on Facebook, also living in Middlesborough, when I had a quick look a few years ago. A lot of the names people think are made up really are people who Bob somehow knows.
When we watched this episode for the first time, my mum knew it was probably true because she had taught a student from Middlesborough whose surname was Bytheway.
The surname Bytheway harkens back to a period in rural Britain when folks were using geographic references as surnames. Bytheway would describe someone who lived By the road (way). When I lived in Nottinghamshire decades ago even Royal Mail had delivery addresses that used geographic references instead of numbers. I remember visiting a business that had the address Upper Pavement, Willow Road, Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire. No numbers. Just a physical description of how to get there.
@@bfallingstar I had a post card once from a friend holidaying in Canada. He didn't remember my address, so described how to get to my house. And my surname is Jones! The only part of the address that was real was "J Jones, .........near Swansea, UK" And his description wasn't all that accurate. I have no idea how it got to me!
The gulf stream isn’t embellished that’s why Britain isn’t as cold as Canada being on the same latitude you can see palm trees flourishing in Scotland near the coast
not just on the same latitude. With the exception of Edmonton (capital city of Alberta) the UK sits much further northwards than the actual populated areas of Canada. even then Edmonton still only sits roughly the same Latitude as Manchester IIRC. If you were in Canada, on the same lattitude as say Glasgow or Edinburgh, you'd be in prime Polar Bear territory 😂
Yes, if it wasn't for the Gulf Stream, my home in Scandinavia would still have been in the grips of the Ice Age. Maybe we'll see that again in 50 years or so.
You've missed the point. Their suggestion about the Gulf Stream being an embellished part of the story means Bob Mortimer's reason for going to Castle Douglas to see the Gulf Stream was a made up part! Not that the Gulf Stream doesn't exist! Doh!
I've seen these stories so many times but I'm crying laughing every time. Bob Mortimer is a legend. You should watch the Lee Mack videos from this show as well, his quick wit is outstanding 😂😂
The amount of embellishment allowed is limited. They can change the names of those involved to protect those who might not want to be named (and the names Bob invents are legendary!), but the bulk of what they say must be true. So the reason for going to Castle Douglas in the first place would have essentially been true no matter how daft it sounded, and if a gang of non-local teenagers suddenly turned up in (what at that time would have been) a quiet town wearing grotesque masks, I'm not surprised they were questioned! But questioned, rather than actually arrested! No doubt there were some other exaggerations in that story, but for the most part it will have been true. That's Bob Mortimer for you!
They’re not supposed to embellish, although it’s not like there are strict rules. However, as Rob Brydon said: “Someone like [surrealist comedian] Bob Mortimer will tell a truth, but obviously you do wonder ‘well how much of that is the truth?’ But Bob is so sort of individual, such a unique presence that you don’t question. “It could be a little bit annoying if you had someone else on and you thought hang on a minute, they made that bit up. But with Bob, it doesn’t seem to matter. But I think that’s the idea, isn’t it?” Source: Radio Times article entitled “The secrets of Would I Lie to You?” from 2016.
This literally just isn't true at all. They can embelish and stretch the 'truth' as much as they like surrounding what's written on the card at their own discretion depending on whether they're trying to get the other team to think it's true or a lie, have you gone all this time thinking the made-up comedic details surrounding all of Bob's truth/lie statements have been anything other than comedy lol?
@@loba4207 source? Because that doesn’t make any sense, in that case everyone is just telling loads of lies, and it’s 50:50 whether their card happens to be true. Why would the other team even bother asking them questions if the answers are going to be lies either way?
Great reaction! I enjoy watching new people reacting to skits/clips/sketches I like. Here is my absolute favorite WILTY *Kevin Bridges: "I once accidentally bought a horse." | Would I Lie To You?* Enjoy! Thanks!
You could start a hold of the channel just for Would I Lie To You? LOL. Top of my list of suggestions would be Kevin Bridges, did he or did he not accidentally buy a horse. Funniest 20 minutes of television I've ever seen😊😊
You know that David Mitchell was quite laid back and chilled before Bob Mortimer started to appear on the show? It's Bob that has made him the paranoid, indecisive man he is today. Bob always (in the ones I have seen) appears on Lee Mack's team, because the interaction between Bob and David is electric, dynamic, chemical and legendary

Many years ago, My Mum, who was a bit liberal with the truth, especially about the many dents in the car that happened when she wasn't near it, came home with a caved in bonnet (hood), Dad asked her what the Hell had she done this time and mum calmly said a bullock had jumped over a hedge and had landed right on top of the car. Whoever told you to do them in order is bang on the money right there’s, because it does make it even more ridiculous and funny seen in order. Keep up the good work!
Bob Mortimer is a national treasure. No matter how ridiculous the story, it's usually true. He elaborates a bit, especially with the names he gives people, but... well, Bob has had an interesting life! He drives poor old David Mitchell crazy on WILTY.
Bob's stories are true, but he's a master at communicating in a way that throws people off. He's good at describing a strange detail that takes people away from analysing the main story. He used to be a lawyer which is even funnier.
Another comedian who's had some great appearances on this show is Greg Davies...I'd give you links if I could but my tech skills are limited, mostly because the abacus was about as techy as it got when I was a kid.
Glad I could help. When that list is done, the video "Mortimeriados" is the part 2 to the deleted Mortimerian Tales compilation and is still available to work through. If that gets taken down too, I'll give you the (much shorter) list for those as well.
Nice reaction guys but I had to look it up. Logan Botanical Gardens. "The Garden is warmed by the Gulf Stream which enables plants from Australia, New Zealand, South and Central America, and Southern Africa to thrive." Bob was not lying about that!
Bob said in his book he loved doing WILTY because, unlike a lot of panel shows, the guests genuinely don't know what's going to be on the card. They give the producers some real stories and it's up to them whether or not they use them during the show.
Well played, thank you for doing another bob, Mortimerian tales gives you about an hour I think, a lot of reactors do it in three parts, thanks again 🙂🏴
@RNTV excellent. He's such a funny bloke, looking forward to more Bob, you've probably already been told to watch, I bought a horse and a few others already, very funny show
It’s true though, that seeing tropical palms in Scotland is impressive, showing the warming effects of the Gulf Stream. It’s at the same latitude as New York and Canada but mild….
I remember, when I was about 12, in the early 1970s, hearing someone who was not much older than me talking about travelling to Dumfries to see the effects of the Gulf Stream. Clearly Bob was also on a quest for Scotch Pies and Dundee, my home town, is famous for its pies, or pehs as they are known locally.
The guy asking Bob is David Mitchell, a comedian himself, worth checking out That Mitchell And Web Thing TV series, there is an epic sketch where the 2 guys are German soldiers asking if we are the baddies based on the icons they wear. Also he did a comedy series called Peep show worth checking out.
I'm from Middlesbrough, the same town Bob is from and I can confirm that Bytheway is a common surname in the town. I can also confirm that Caramel and Waffle are real journalists who worked on the evening gazette in the town.
Things to remember when Bob Mortimer tells a story; if it sounds totally ludicrous, is populated by children with really strange names who he persuaded to go along with whatever scheme he had in mind, and involved getting into trouble because people misunderstood - it's probably true. His school stories are brilliant. He must have been that kid who had the great ideas and you'd follow them anywhere all summer long because there was never a dull moment with him. How he managed to gain the qualifications to become a Solicitor (Lawyer) is as mind blowing as he is.
I believe that Bytheway is a common name where Bob is from the the north east of England. Historically, the name is from when last names came from professions, e.g. John Baker or James Butler. Bytheway came from those people that lived by toll roads and collected the tolls for those travelling on them, therefore they would live “by the way” (“way” is a term for road”
You liked David Mitchell's questions. There are a number of great David Mitchell ones - eg "Victoria doesn't know this"(his wife), "As a child, I was afraid of the sun", "David's pen policy", Bob Mortimer-"Theft And Shrubbery", Lee Mack - "Wok around the clock", Lee Mack Vs. The Mitchells"
It's not out of the realm of possibility that a car filled with teenagers, all wearing grotesque Halloween masks, would make people concerned. It's basically the uniform for bank robbers 😂
Once you have done the Bob Mortimer's 'Would I Lie To You' appearances, you two really should react to Chris McCausland's 'Rude Neigbour' story on 'Would I Lie to You'! It's one of the funniest tales aside from Bob :D
Just for context on Bob, He was a solicitor ( Lawyer ) and once was going to represent a singer because he showed his bottom to Michael Jackson. He took one look at the big group of lawyers Jackson had and apologised and left. This story is told by many musician and comedian that witnessed it, but this was Bob's explanation.
Just for info. Harry Harryman is a real name and a friend of Bob’s, he mentions him in his book. Also i am from the same area as Bob and Bytheway is a very common name round here, i once worked with a bloke who had that name.
Hi Guys. Lovely reaction. Castle Douglas has a tropical garden with palm trees. Its unusual because it is in Scotland. Scotland is notoriously cold and wet. Its further noth than many cities in Canada. Castle Douglas relies on the Gulf Stream to keep its weather mild throughout the year. It has palm trees lol. Unbelievable but true. Keep up the good work. I watch you daily. Love from the UK. PS , Bob won't use real names of real people. It is to protect their identity. He probably hasn't got permission to use their names.
I want you to pay special attention to the ongoing vibe between David (the guy with the beard) and Bob. You're seeing the beginnings of it in these early videos, but as time goes on? It... becomes intense. By the way... 😁. the names are always fake. Even in real stories. Bob takes real advantage of that.
To be fair to Bob; you can sense the influence of the Gulf Stream in that part of Scotland. The rest of the country is always extremely cold & is where the weather comes in from in our country (south westerly). The Gulf Stream is this massive flow of water which comes over the Atlantic from the Gulf of Mexico & we regularly get all kinds of weird things arriving in that area such as sea turtles, sharks, whales, etc which wouldn’t normally be in our waters but they’ve travelled up the Gulf Stream where the water is still very warm and not realised they’ve swam thousands of miles from home. Similarly the flora & fauna in the area is very different to that of the rest of the country. You get foliage that wouldn’t look out of place in states like Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, and other gulf states. Whilst it’s always funny to laugh at Bob, this is actually very factual & Rob Brydon & David Mitchell are making fun of him for it 😂 I actually felt a bit sorry for him, but David & Rob have obviously never seen a botanical garden, but it is pretty amazing when you’re in an area that’s usually around 0 degrees Celsius & there’s snow and ice around for half the year…. And then also palm trees and bayou type plant life too, it’s bizarre.
Love the improve on this show. If it's true it almost has to sound like a lie while still telling the truth. If it's a lie that is the first time they actually see the card and they have to make it sound true. The writers really can make some outlandish lies.
I remember the day my younger brothers school trip was ended when the police had to stop the coach after having reports of firearms on board . My brother and his friend, aged 13 at the time, had waterpistols and were just being kids aiming these brightly coloured things outside the window. obviously some "karen" decided it was bad and called the police. So I can see how this happened to Bob and his friends .
One thing you may not be aware of: 40 or 50 years ago, when this story took place, culturally Britain regarded the police as their friends. The police were there to not only uphold the law, but to serve the people. Thats the reason that the Police in Britain didn't routinely carry firearms. Anyway, as children we were all taught to comply with requests from the police. The police saw themselves as upholders of the law, but also the guarantors of good behaviour in the community, and often, just to let them know they had crossed the line, would invite unruly teenagers to the Police Station just to give them a jolt, and remind them that there were lines they shouldn't cross. So they'd ask the miscreants to come to the Police Station, then put them through an interview as if they had been arrested, just to try and shock them out of the offending behaviour. This often worked, simply because the culture accepted this action from the police. There was no violence or bullying from the police, and often the threat of "We'll have to tell your parents" was often enough to elicit behavioural change, as most parents took bringing up their children seriously. I wont comment on how things are very different today.
Take the rose tinted specs off. Police brutality was a very real thing back then as well, and because people had a very different view of the force, no one cared
Names can be changed to 'protect privacy or anonymity'. Bob seems to "collect" unusual names. So I happily believe he's met Steve Bytheway and Harry Harriman. That doesn't mean they were the names of the people in this story. *_IGNORE_* Bob's mad names. He uses them to distract, embellish, and inject his surreal sense of humour, without breaking rules or the spirit of WILTY. Best Wishes. ☮
In England, going back to 30 years, the police would use scare tactics (in slap of the wrist kind of way) to make kids think twice about doing something they shouldn’t
Oh... they found Bob. Going to enjoy them going down this rabbit hole! :)
Wait til they get to dentistry
Wait til they find Henning.
Jess eyes always smiling.. I love her laugh too

The whole of the UK is further north than Winnipeg, which is fairly far north into the more densely inhabited part of Canada
@@vaudevillian7 WOW, thanks for the info :).
Hi jess I looked for your dads book on audible but no luck maybe something for the future
The unwritten rule of Would I Lie To You is that answers to questions have to at least be "technically true", when you're telling a true story.
14:20 Don't hold your breath on that.
If it's true, they are supposed to tell the whole truth. They can omit things. If the story is a lie, none of it is true.
Please react to more Bob on this show.
Bytheway was an actual surname at the start of the 20th century in Scotland.
Bytheway is an actual name. I had a friend at school called Bytheway.
I will.
The Uk police have turned into the stasi..
Take the rose tinted specs off. Police brutality was a very real thing back then as well, and because people had a very different view of the force, no one cared
Dixon of dock green were nice coppers.😂
Bob Mortimer is so funny. Check out him with Vic Reeves on 'Shooting Stars'
Please watch a cat who walked 100 miles torment Rory on would I lie to you. Also so funny
For reference. Freedom of speech comes from the UK (Locke et al) (The Bill of Rights - 1689) from the French (Voltaire et al).

Coming soon friend!
James Acaster is also worth checking out.
