Lovell Canyon is a great place for dispersed camping. The prime spots can go fast in the best weather, but you can always find a spot. Lovell Canyon Road used to be a huge area for target shooting (and tactical shooting practice - not too far from your spot is a large area where you'd see groups of a dozen people, with fully automatic rifles, in full tactical gear, blasting away). However Clark County and the BLM jointly closed the area to target shooting about 3 years ago.
There are several spectacular hiking trails that start just across from the cabins. They would have been closed on 3/16 when you were there, but if you're ever back there in late spring or summer, the Cathedral Rock trail is an awesome trail for drone footage. You can't operate a drone on the trail up to Mt. Charleston Peak because it's a wilderness area, but of course you can operate your drone from outside the wilderness area and fly over it.

Awesome, a subaru would have no problem with these trails. We're not crazy off roaders either we like having a comfortable, capable ride from A to B

It's a 4 x 4. I've been to Vegas a million times yet that was our first time to lovell. It's not that far from the strip and we'll have to come back this winter

By the way, when you were staying at the cabin, did they say anything about when they were going to rebuild the restaurant?

Just use google maps to look up Lovell canyon road. Then there are couple dirt road turn offs. My favorite is you follow the paved road until it ends. Then take a left and go up through the mountains. Just follow it all the way around and you’ll get to a point where you can take a left or right. Take the left. It actually leads towards Pahrump. Just bring a side arm or be aware. I ran into two mountain lions this year. One crossed the paved road right in front of me. Like we weren’t even there.

You can just take blue Diamond/160 all the way up towards Pahrump and after you pass the bar on the right lovell canyon road won’t be far from there. It’ll be a sign. That’s the way I take. Looks like he went through the red rock loop.
