- Racing MX1 class at the acerbis nationals on my honda cr500 getting the bike set up for farleigh castle world vets and foxhills motocross vets des nations. Bike is amazing . Can’t wait to race it. Pretty crazy .. 1996 CR500 against 2023 Honda CRF450.

CR-500's engines were detuned in 1988 and there on ,the 85 86 and 87 CR-500s were the hardest hitting CR-500's ! Sure do miss my old 87CR-500 race bike especially knowing that it's worth twice the amount that I paid for it brand new🥺

I'd really like to know the details regarding the suspension on the CR500. upgrades forks, rear shock, etc. we all know it makes a huge difference. Great riding.
Does not even require special person, just someone with equal talent to rest of field. Does not take a pro rider on a 500 to beat an average rider on 450.

I've ridden a 92 CR500, way back in the day, Nev makes it look rediculously easy, I thought I was a young fit lad, after 5 minutes I felt ready for the knackers yard, that power is brutal.

I had a friend with an 88 trx250r. He would smoke them the new 450 fourstrokes 'every' holeshot, ever time. 350 bigbore. They did not like it at all.
Man I hope you're getting some sponsorship or free suspension work done, engine work etc because you are the best 2-stroke Rider I've seen in a long time , you're bringing the fans back. I've had a lot of injuries and can't ride on the dirt anymore because of my knees, so converted my 300 2-stroke for the road for a daily runabout. Neville makes me like watching racing again thanks brother
A lot of guys on TH-cam are buying two-strokes and making videos but it's just for the likes they actually don't even like the two-stroke and they hardly raced them but you never erasing them all the time and I can see the passion in the two strokes

Great ride Neville!! I especially enjoyed your putting away #401 the way you did. I find it annoying when guys zig zag across the track, just road blocking without holding any sort of line. Preventing a pass by occupying space isn’t a mark of greatness, leaving a dude in the dust is 👍🏆
#401 allowed to go home feeling he was fast that day. Good on him, this helps riders actually get faster by believing they are.

@@bertbroeder1832 Bad decisions is about right. Those 500 engines can be re-invented with things like direct fuel inject, electronic fuel inject, broadening the torque range, put into newer frames, with vibe reductions and all manner of upgrades that'll take it to the next level. Not hating on 4-strokes either. Love them. But i think the time is fast approaching when 2strokes will make a huge comeback. And i'd love to see a 350 2-stroke edition.

Ya had me worried there at 1st! Ya got the hole shot and let dude sneak in on you.. then he completely almost cut you off several times, which made me very angry! But it was worth it! He made me laugh, almost killing himself half a dozen times, trying to get away from you!!😂😂😂 It was hilarious!! Karma baby!! He was wide open on his 450, kept looking back, i could see the fear in his eyes!! and no matter what line he took or how fast he went, he couldn't keep you off him!! Having been thru all the offroad wars. chasing points on a 250 two stroke makes me appreciate this VID. Newer guys in the sport don't realize what older guys already know...Your can go win on an older bike..with the right set up. Some of us like showing up at the start ......wearing carharts on an older two stroke with no stickers or pretty gear and SMOKE all the dudes and have a good laugh..Riding is great. Loved the video.

Awesome video. I sent to my dirt bike group today that included my Buddy that raced a brand new 98CR500 back in the day in our Mid-South Hare Scramble races. It is his Birthday today and I know he will enjoy it. The sound is so distinct. We are old now and ride 4 strokes with electric start and rekluse clutches :)

Ahhhh the venerable CR 500…..just watching this made my hands lose all feeling, vision blurred at certain RPM and nuts went completely numb lol…hats off to this rider who hammered it out in this race…..500 2 strokes were a mans man motorcycle for sure. The best one I rode back in the nineties , and maybe one of the best motorcycles I ever rode to this day, was one of Ted Hunnicuts old KX 500s. Was like riding a comfy recliner with little felt vibration at the grips and an electric like motor. Great memories.

Great riding by both guys! Good to see the differences in power between both bikes. That 4 stroke was relentless in all small turns and corners and that 2 stroke opened up and gained on all straights. Great race and great riding by both guys

I owned one and they are a beast just to hold on to. 4th gear starts! I was leaning into every corner just watching:)
I use to race big bore two strokes. My last one was a CR500. Even after years of riding them, it was hard to ride even two laps without arm pump as the power output takes a toll. This rider is an amazing rider to keep it on the power as he did.

When I went from a 250 to a 400 Suzuki I had to learn how to ride it as it was a completely different power band. If I rode it like a 250 the rear wheel would spin and I fell a couple of times. I learned to stay a gear higher and lug it. All of that low end torque would pull it out of the corners just like this guy was doing on the 500. I kept up with a CR500 one day at the track even though we were not officially racing.

Great footage, really interesting seeing your different lines and the difference in when the power comes in and how you can use that. And very informative about a legend of a bike. 1996 vs 2023. There's thankfully no argument here about who's the best current manufacturer, just an H on H race. What would a new chassis CR500 Honda with Tpi or Tbi be like now....?

What an accurate representation of the mid '90s CR500 experience. The only bit missing is it trying to spit you off every 100 yards
That 500 2stroke separated the men from the boys when i was growing up hands down 2 stroke is the only way to go dont worry about being in shape to ride that beast you'll be in world class shape if you become a competitive rider.
So satisfying 😊

Totally agree. That race was over in the first turn. By backing off and keeping the 4 stroke in front of you kept me watching. I saw some poor line choices but now I’m thinking it was just to make it interesting. 👍🏻

I had a 92 RM 250, fast, reliable and comfortable, early 40s when I got back into riding. I would have loved to had this track around!

I'm years past my dirt bike days. Trie to jump from a CR 125 to a KX 500. That didn't go as planned. Scared myself. I'm glad my snowmobile still has a 2 stroke. Lightweight power is the order of the day when you're ditch banging.

I had a YZ 250 and then I got a CR 500.
The CR was faster but I preferred the nimbleness of the lighter YZ and the CR's pull was so strong it wore me out. But that is just me.
Dude on the 450 n33ds to open thay high speed rebound on the top of the shock body and go in 2-3 clicks on the very botom of the shock speed up the rebound hes packing so.haed entering corners
I tried it too, as well as that engine requires more physics and more breath the tracks are no longer for 2t, 4t they dig differently and you can't ride your lines... but the sound is fantastic😛😛😛😛😛

Proof that any advanced rider on a 27 year old bike will crush an amateur on a brand new one. I raced in 1987-1988. Owned one of the 1st Red engine CR250R. What an awesome bike that was back in the day. Wish I could still ride but 63 years of abuse on my body won't let me do it anymore.
Great. race, i was worried when he kept cutting you off. Smoke that clutch in the corners to hold that rpm. I taught myself that, riding the clutch on a tractor to start a pull, or pulling the front end to use the downward force of front,then clutch, or to hold heavy tension on pulll.
You're one of the only people in the comments noticing that. Could have passed him 100 times if he wasn't all over the place so inconsistent. Anyway, have you ridden a KX or CR500? Doesn't feel like you have to ride the clutch like 125.

I've been riding two-stroke since the 70 s my first was a Maiko 400 and had mini Japanese open class two stroke since then of The Big Three it's amazing to me how far along 4-stroke to come have come over the years especially with their weight I'm 62 I've always written a two-stroke and I'll die riding the two stroke stroke after watching this I'm going to rip one on my 20/20 Husqvarna 2 stroke fuel injected long live the two stroke !

Ik have been a International Champ Honda 500cc 85 model. Can tell ya. You need to be in shape to tame that beest. I did a testride with the honda 4 stroke last year and Im 60 year old. I can tel you it felt like luxery, not brutal at all. Back in the days you needed to know to pick the wright gear in the corners and the arms of a gorilla, or it blew you off. It was a beast. ;)
Yes it’s a lot easier on the new 4 strokes with fuel injection. Don’t need to carry any momentum

To be fair, that year the CR500R was an absolute beast, even among the 500cc class. Pr GP riders used to have their CR500s detuned so they could hold onto them for an entire race.
