      @@libradan "A range of literature indicates that various features of Universal Credit can result in homelessness and a number of correlations between homelessness and Universal Credit can be observed in the data" That's from a study by the Scottish government
      Conclusion: "The evidence is clear that certain features of UC can lead to homelessness by contributing to financial, relationship, and mental health problems. The five-week wait and increased sanctions have been shown to be particularly detrimental, with policies such as the Benefit Cap, the Bedroom Tax, and recent decisions around Local Housing Allowance rates also implicated. Other aspects of Universal Credit may also contribute to homelessness. For example, a range of organisations have raised concerns that the joint payment made to couples under UC may cause relationship issues and enable domestic abuse - both of which, in turn, can lead to homelessness.[32] It is also possible that the design of UC contributes to homelessness indirectly by deterring or excluding individuals who require support"

    Moving people to the north is ridiculous. My son and his wife are classed as homeless, although their landlady has now said they can stay until the property, which is damp, and needs a new roof, until it is sold. My daughter in law and grandaughter both have asthma, Both parents have jobs. People from West Yorkshire own holiday homes in the area they live in, and both prices and rents are through the roof. I feel for all those without permanent accommodation. There are many properties which are boarded up and could be made habitable.

      @psims7342 how does that work out. It's strange because where I live in Norwich you can live pretty okay for £15 an hour, you can get yourself a flat that is for sure.

    • @MrMoralHighground
      @MrMoralHighground ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Davserban well, the minimum wage is 10.42 an hour, so, if you work 40 hours a week thats 416.80 per week, multiplied by 52 because obviously thats how many weeks there are in a year which is 21673. the current national average wage is 31876, which, divided by 52 is 613 and then divided by 40 hours per week leaves us with £15.32 per hour and i completely agree, any person could live pretty well off of that...........the problem, is that most people dont get that and of course the big fat cat ceos etc who earn millions per year end up pushing the average wage to what most people just do not get close to. the definition of poverty in the uk is earning 60% below the average wage so if we go back to the 31876 figure and divide that by 100 and multiply it by 60 to get 60%, we see that in order to meet the uk criteria of living in poverty, youd need to be earning 19125.60 a year or less. the average amount of hours worked per week in the uk is 36.4, so if we take the minimum wage figure of 10.42 and multiply that by 36.4 which is 379.29 (rounded up) and multiply that again by 52 we get an average amount earned by a national minimum wage employee in the uk, which is 19722.98 *rounded up) per year. please note, its at this point i realise my previous comment is slightly incorrect (lol) so i will make a new statement, which is that anyone who works less than 35.3 hours per week on minimum wage is in poverty
      so there we go, i admit i was estimating and i did get pretty close but its still a pretty stark reality given the sheer number of people who do not work 35 hours a week (through no fault of their own) and do earn minimum wage - i personally feel that a lot of people do not even realise that they are technically in poverty, currently the uk poverty rate is 18.9% which in my opinion is a hell of a lot of people living in poverty for a supposed developed nation - that includes 4.2 million children currently living in poverty which i believe is around 30% of all (uk resident) children living in the uk
      and all that being said, 15.32 per hour just to earn the average uk wage..........shocking

      Depends whether the buyer is buying as a holiday home or if they buy as an owner occupier they tend to under occupy it. One house rented to 4 sharing renters is more likely to be bought by a couple who don’t intend to share, thus those 4 people need to find a place and the place the 2 who bought vacated is probably not suitable for 4 people (for example). The only way it’s really neutral is if the buyer occupies to the same capacity as the previous owner/landlord did. I also know of people who buy and keep empty just because it’s a hassle to rent out and they are just interested in land banking it for capital appreciation (or just as secure store of wealth). This is particularly common in London where there are over 30,000 empty homes.

    • @loraynechaldecott2840
      @loraynechaldecott2840 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lightweightben I do agree that some places are bought and then used as holiday places. My daughters new-ish neighbour has done exactly that. The place had been extended/renovated and sold for about £800,000 - goodness only knows how anyone can afford that as a second home! They’re hardly ever there either.
      While I have known of places occupied by several different adults (my son’s neighbours this time) it isn’t that common round here though. Personally
      I do have a problem with second homes when so many don’t have a first! But then if I was rich enough myself I could probably live with the guilt…..hypocrite that I am! 🤒

    This government cares not one jot about the people of this country as don’t the majority of ALL PARTY MP’s.
    Their priority is to ensure that CEO’s, shareholders and all the other greedy companies are looked after at our expense.
    Ref housebuilding, can anyone explain to me what an ‘affordable house’ is?
    Here in the North East We have houses springing up in every orifice of our town and yet the cheapest I have seen is over £200k up to £850k !
    Why are these house building companies not building TOWN HOUSES at prices first time buyers AND FAMILIES can afford?
    These are a great step on the property ladder AND cheap to run for first time buyers and families?
    For me an affordable house should be around £90-100k and I would suggest a profit will still be made!
    It’s pure evil for government and councils to turn a blind eye to the plight of the hardworking people in this country who, no matter what, they cannot get a home of their own.
    However, no such problems for those arriving in a boat.
    CRIMINAL !

Am I missing something isn’t it that simple is % of cases where like me and my partner we can’t afford the upfront costs and the lack of no guarantor. Can’t we deal with this with a deal with government and it’s a deal we have to stick to if the government temporarily guarantors to get people of the streets in in their own homes able to save money.
