  • In this tutorial/training style video, we break down the process of masking off cabinet boxes in preparation for spray finishing. I explain in detail how I measure my tape and my papers for the tightest result. Sharing my little tips and tricks for what works to avoid common taping and papering issues that come when masking off the interiors of the boxes on cabinets. This may be a long video, but if you see it all, your cabinet masking should be a breeze from this point on.

    I like the idea of using paper, to mask.
    I usually use plastic with good results.
    Just wanted to share with you, on the paper overlap, I use with white 3M tape to save a few bucks, you can do the same on the "re-tape", where tape on tape happens.
    Great video.

      Thank you so much for watching,, and for your comment! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Totally understand and agree. But, saving on the material doesn't concern me, consistency and ease of recreating quality is important. So we keep it simple using 1 or 2 tape types, the client pays for the material I've estimated and everything flows.

      Yea, that issue of flaking really varies product to product. Specifically shellac. I know many people who use plastic and it works for them because the products they are using don't flake as easily. But for me, its not worth the risk. My employees use it sometimes though. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏🏻🙏🏻

    How do you deal with the build up in the corners? When removing my tape it ripped dry cabinet paint off because of the build up

    • @artists_touch_painting
      @artists_touch_painting  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I take a really sharp brand new razor blade and cut the tape line against the lip, then peel the remainder off from the back side. But, some tapes and making sure not to over build those corners keeps that bridging from happening. But the razor is the safest sure bet to avoid any peeling.

  • @donbushek733
    @donbushek733 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you deal with dried paint bridging between paper and cabinet when you go to unmask? Do you simply slice through the paper and then remove the tape that’s left? Or is there a better way?

    • @artists_touch_painting
      @artists_touch_painting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes it doesn't bridge too badly and can be pushed off after. But usually we cut with clean new razor and peel the backing. There is another way to mask the openings that eliminates that issue that I'll do a video on soon.

    Just started a paint company. How do you figure out your price for cabinet jobs?

    • @artists_touch_painting
      @artists_touch_painting  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most people price per piece, meaning how many doors and drawers. And price per piece. X amount for doors and x amount for drawers. Some price per linear foot or square foot. I personally get my base line price per piece depending on the door profile. Anywhere from $100-200 a piece, and this covers cost of the boxes on site. I compare that to my know cost of labor per week and what I think it will take to complete the project. DM me on Instagram if you'd like to dig deeper on some of this stuff.

The video is not titled "how to mask off cabinet boxes fast" although it is fast. The video is not a short, its not a reel, it's not a tip to, its a detailed teaching of how to do it. With all the possibilities, with discussion of all the problems. Go into it blind the first time and it will take you 10 min per box because you don't have a clue. Your welcome for the foresight and free teaching. Keep comming back 🙏🏻

    My kitchen cabinets have European hinges. Therefore no face plate lip for the tape to easily stick to. What is the taping method for that? The cupboard faces are the wood grain look as well as the ends but the insides are melamine. I am thinking of painting the whole cupboards white. The inside of the boxes are white also so leaving the face frame wood looking would be obviously wrong. Please help. Thanks.

    • @artists_touch_painting
      @artists_touch_painting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With boxes that don't have a lip we do a clean tape line to the edge. Then we take tape and fold it in half to shape an L to build a lip for the paper to stick to. It's tedious but it works. I'll make a video on this next time I run into it

    Do you caulk the panels on the doors?

    • @artists_touch_painting
      @artists_touch_painting  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Absolutely not. I used to when I started and then I learned the hard way. 5 piece cabinets are made with the center panel to be able to float. Wood breaths and swells in multiple directions, so that caulk bridged gap WILL crack eventually, making the job look really bad.

    • @Igor-q3f
      @Igor-q3f 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@artists_touch_painting what do you do and tell the customer if it doesn’t look good? In some spots you can still see the crack line, some areas the paint filled it. If it’s light colors you can see all that even on the same door.

    • @artists_touch_painting
      @artists_touch_painting  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I don't let it happen. Its called laddering and it means you painted to heavy, on an angle, or the paint took to long to dry. The off chance that it does happen to me, I try to scrape it out while its wet. If I miss it you can use a dental pick tool to try and scrape the paint out of the seam. You can caulk it if you want, but try to use as little caulk as possible, wipe it wet. And tell the client that it WILL crack later down the road when the wood breaths due to temp and humidity changes.

    • @artists_touch_painting
      @artists_touch_painting  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Never. Unless its open shelving, or glass doors, the interiors do not get done. Takes twice as long, twice as much paint, twice as difficult to get it all cleaned and sanded, adds twice as many pieces including shelves, and I charge twice as much. Juat to be behind closed doors. Not worth the time, effort or expense.

    • @artists_touch_painting

      Either way is fine. Fold it and you use more tape. Fold it inside and stick it removes waste, saves blades, and saves tape, BUT it takes more time and effort as well as lends itself to problems sealing the sheet down flat on the perimiter.
