85% prep 10% paint 5% clean up , it's all about the prep, The only thing I do different is I bring the cabinets and drawers back home to my shop and spray. I prefer to stay out of a customers home as much as possible, since I paint kitchens solo, my job time is much higher then yours, 7-10 days on a average, also depending on any glaze/antiquing work added to the finish. If I have a customer who can't afford a sprayed finish and is on a tight budget, I offer a brushed and roll version; (using a Dunn Edwards primer/ oil base product) and the time is cut down usually to two days. Great video, this can help teach all the new and seasoned painters who stayed away from painting cabinets.
Not to be funny but if they can’t afford it then stay away from the job. Why waste your time and energy, that’s the issue, everyone is a painter nowadays and everyone who watches a TikTok video wants to do the same, so much competition that charges people less than what the job is worth
OMG it took me 2 full days to mask my kitchen like that. I absolutely could not mask with the plastic sheeting. It was like I need 6 hands to hold it from folding onto itself and catching the tape. Had to toss it every time and finally switched to paper but couldn't get the paper/tape roller (same one you have) to line up for more than 3 inches. LOL.
When I mask cabinets, i find it helpful to use 2 inch tape to give your outboard facing tape more purchase on the masking, and cabinets, and this makes the "double bind" more secure, which should help prevent blowouts.
We use masking paper with lacquer proof green tape. Lay down blue painter's tape first. Paper doesn't flake, so no need for extra expensive plastic masking. Run the paper wider than what you need and wrinkle it back, afixing it with blue or green tape. Just to note, blue tape doesn't like to stick too well on other blue tape.
Hey good to see you on your knees there at the end to accurately finish off. I fired a guy last week because he wouldn't wear knee pads thought he could bend over and do everything.
Do you do anything different to prep cheap builder grade cabinets that have the thermofoil on the exposed ends of the cabinets. Does it sand ok? Do you just clean, and prime it first, then sand? Great videos! Very helpful! Thanks
The blue 3m rolls have static cling. I could see drywall dust move towards it on a sunny day. It also clings to surfaces which makes it easy to do tapping.
I like masking the same exact way, but, I prefer to do the sanding first, than vacuum dust and clean before masking so as to not damage the integrity of the tape and leave the possibility of blow outs. Awesome video though!
Michael Perez, the only issue I presume would be the dust carrying over into the customers cabinets and creating a large mess within; that creates a recipe for displeased customer. After plastic and prep sand. Start at a higher section and use a air compressor air and lightly remove dust, then vacuum, at the end I use tack cloths or a lint free cloths several times to make sure. Another trick that works well is to tent off work area then cover the cabinet and drawer faces only ( but plastic stove, fridge ect..)then prep sand, wipe down cabinet surface; then vacuum counters and floors. You then use a damp cloth, wipe the floors and counters and finish cover prep and place clean paper on the counter space and floor area.
Doom Punk yeah, them tac cloths are absolute money makers! It is smart to mask off all the appliances beforehand so as to save any issues cropping with dust and damage. I dig your moves man, I like your style!
How do you get the plastic so perfect on the tape for the cabinets I tried doing it and couldn’t want to scissors but it’s sloppy and plastic hangs over do they sell the plastic pre-cut for the cabinets ?
if your not painting as a job u can just use regular plastic but u have to wipe on a mixture of cooking oil and baking soda. the baking soda neutralises the acid in the spray. and the oil dosent dry out so the baking soda wont just fall off from using something like water. or maybe water works too just test it out
Do plastic off the walls and partial ceiling? I would like to see the painting process after prep. also when do you clean/degrease/sand/wipe clean the cabinets? you're not just using Denatured Alcohol to clean are you?
When taping off around the dishwasher, it seems like that inner lip adjacent to the dishwasher will never get sprayed , right ? Or do you touch it up later ? I’m just wondering how you get to it if the dishwasher door remains shut during the spraying.
Do you pull-off and remask between coats? In some of your videos regarding masking/painting interior trim you advise to pull off and remask between each coat.
Normally yes, in another video, they mentioned this. They only wrap the drawers like that when the drawer front doesn't come off. There are 2 in my own house that the front doesn't come off. Guess it depends on the type/manufacturer of cabinets.
Do you cover the tops of the upper cabinets? I assume it’s not necessary since nobody will see it from eye level, but just curious what industry standard is.
@@bobbrown5323 it’s a lot of money but it’s a lot of work too! It’s totally worth it. I’m moving to my new house on the 22nd and is the first thing I want along with adding a fireplace 🥹
I would never waist my time tapping off the base. I can have it sanded and primed just as fast with brush snd fine finish roller. Painted of course the next day also by hand and never bring in a sprayer into someone’s home. Also their kitchen with families always have acces to it at any time. The real focus if done right is the better then factory finish they get on the doors and drawer fronts.
That plastic is ok for laquer? Cabinets I’ve just always used premium paper green . I’ve had problems with stain bleeding they the paper. Also u could mention liquid sandpaper 👍🏻
I'm seeing this quite often that no one paints the insides. Why is that??? More materials and time? I sprayed one of my barbershop buddies apartment cabinets. Did everything as far as a tremendous amount of prepping ,masking and door removal to then spraying the insides and out two years ago because I thought that's what these job entails being that I've never done cabinets before. Now as I'm typing thinking damn isn't this what body shops do as well.🤨😂
Micheal I would strongly encourage you to take the time to score, lightly, where the tracks are for the drawers and remove them to allow easier taping. Also remove the faces for easier spraying. You'll find you have much better results if you do. If you have the ability I'd remove dishwasher and microwave as well
Nice job personally I would have removed the two screws and removed the face of the drawers. Hang em and spray em. This type of work creates alot of waste for prepping. Wrapping the entire drawer like a Xmas gift is a no for me.
We are so disappointed. We just had our cabinets painted and can't believe the the mess and work we are left to clean. The cabinet doors were taken to another location and sprayed , everything was brushed and rollered. We removed quite a bit from drawers and cabinets to clear openings. He didn't even come close to doing anything like this to protect our things. He did a wonderful job, was very kind and friendly but right now we are overwhelmed and angry. Our guess is that when he did the light sanding he used a vacuum he brought and that was the issue. Guessing it wasn't cleaned out and or filter was filthy and what was going in was being pushed out into our hone. We took pictures, we have 4 rooms that are in a blanket of white. Well I have vented , doesn't Change anything , but anyone watching and reading .... be vigilant. Now my old stained cabinets don't seem so bad. To top it of we all suffer from respiratory issues from Covid and I already was allergic to dust, we did spend a lot of his work time here gone because of these issues. They won't be receiving what they think.
I can't believe you're spraying lacquer in people's houses. Hopefully they're out of town for the week. I will agree it is the best finish and it sets up fast in between coats. But the stench is horrendous and it lingers for days.
Spray the doors...mini roll the cabinet frames...no masking needed at all...and done in less that half the amount of time... by the time you masked of everything I could have had the frames painted and done...
stopped watching once I realized "muscle guy" was showing off his "gym results", lmao, never watched the whole thing. Sorry muscle guy, you lost me at the 15 second mark...
Thanks for all the tips and tricks of the trade! Very useful

I like the way you do that been painting since a kid second generation but definitely picked up some tricks here! Keep up the good work!
Omg!! This saved me so much frustration and time in prepin my kitchen cabinets for repainting 🙏🏼

You all have been doing a great job.
Thank you for the advice. What type 3m hand masker do you use?
M3000
The blue 3m rolls have static cling. I could see drywall dust move towards it on a sunny day. It also clings to surfaces which makes it easy to do tapping.
you could ground it with a bit of thin gage wire taped on and stick it in the ground plug. ground plug is safe thats the round one in America
Great work guys.
What would you do on cabinets that do not have a face?
nothing! congrats, you already done!

not for lacquer you can put on like 10 coats in one day but yeah his other method of remasking between coats it fuck all id never do that.
Do you guys sand the frames?
Do you have to sand buildup where the back masking meets the back side of the opening?
Can you mask cabinets with rosin paper instead of the plastic or will it bleed when overspray gets on paper?
You guy’s Rock 👍
Where can I find the paper/tape rolling holder/dispenser?
paintlifesupply.com
This is great info. What is your preferred type of paint to use on cabinets?
Hp apoxy Kelly more
mmm do u still use pre cat lacquer, not good!
I'd pull off the drawer fronts and put them back on faster than masking with no materials used/wasted
Normally yes, in another video, they mentioned this. They only wrap the drawers like that when the drawer front doesn't come off. There are 2 in my own house that the front doesn't come off. Guess it depends on the type/manufacturer of cabinets.
Just what I was looking for! Thanks!

Do you cover the tops of the upper cabinets? I assume it’s not necessary since nobody will see it from eye level, but just curious what industry standard is.
After watching this video and how much work and time it takes to mask the whole kitchen , I’m def going to pay someone else to do it for me… f this 😩🤣
I was quoted $5,000

I am about to start my kitchen and I was thinking of just using garbage bags for the drawers , taped in.
Interesting
I tried this method, but had problems with paint bridging from the face frame to the tape, causing a nightmare. Do you just re-mask between coats?
Can I use regular graco airless spray machine?
Yes . Use a fine finish tip

oh good it is not just my customers who leave the dishwasher full of dishes especially when it has to be pulled for flooring!!!
What do you do if you can’t tape behind the face like that?
thump up guys, that a lot of tapes and papers and plastics lol
Hey I love your channel, can you make a video how to paint ikea kitchen cabinets ?
Did you guys sand these?
Of course
I'm seeing this quite often that no one paints the insides. Why is that??? More materials and time? I sprayed one of my barbershop buddies apartment cabinets. Do you sand first?
No, use denatured alcohol, it cleans but also "scuffs" it on a micro level. Any gloss or residue will get scuffed and accept the paint
why alcohol vs. lacquer thinners? both dry quickly
What ever works for you
@@Idahopainter ok, I thought I was doing something wrong.
Alcohol doesn't some stains well , use better TSP not to regret later.
Tsp leaves a residue. Alcohol dries fast so you. Paint faster. If you want to ensure no bleeding use Bin primer. Shalac base
I tape it with white first and use plastic for everything.
I only use frog tape when I need a tight line-boxes don’t need it on the inside
Less speed. More detail on how you tape your corners and appliances.
Whatever you guys charge is not enough, I should have paid someone to paint my kitchen cabinets. Overwhelming task for me.
For the cabinets, can u not just take the door apart?
or you could use wood pellet bags to cover the drawers I recycle hundreds of them a year
or $0.0001 garbage bags.
@@zer05tar sure, dollar tree
I guess you couldn't easily remove the faces from the drawer boxes the job I'm doing this week they are removable which is nice!
Micheal I would strongly encourage you to take the time to score, lightly, where the tracks are for the drawers and remove them to allow easier taping. Also remove the faces for easier spraying. You'll find you have much better results if you do. If you have the ability I'd remove dishwasher and microwave as well
Why not use 48 or 24 inch plastic? 2 to 3 times as much tape. Just my opinion
Lol, and make sure you flex while masking to show off 💪 👌. Not jelly, I'd do the same!
