It’s really sad how we treat animals. Seems the root cause for a lot of human death & suffering starts here. But we never learn. One thing I’ve never understood…I grew up on the 80’s when AIDS was treated as the great unknown. Seems like all of a sudden the only way I find out how far we’ve come in the fight against it is from drug treatment commercials in the US. There were no huge celebrations within the gen pop when AIDS treatment had improved so significantly. I do not understand why. It used to be attempted murder to knowingly sleep with someone without disclosure. Now new drugs and undetectability seem to have changed this completely. I truly appreciate your insight and knowledge on the topic of HIV. I was very curious to know how and when SIV crossed (Zoonosis) and mutated to HIV. Thank you for that answer. Now I'm even more courious about the ancestry of this Lentivirus. I wonder when SIV Zoonosis to primates and from what species? Primates are believed to have existed for 50 to 55 million years. It is amazing that the version of this Lentivirus (HIV) is just 100 years old, since Homo sapiens have been existing for 330 000 years. I am also wondering if you consider viruses, like HIV, to be alive? Where does HIV fit in the definition of life?
I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! I just read more about the ancestors of SIVs. SIV particles have been observed in many different monkeys/apes. However, they mostly do not cause any symptoms which is important as these SIV forms can evolve with their host for a long time with a lower risk to become exist. When we want to know how old a virus is we can compare how many mutations have occurred between two viruses. If we know how rapidly the virus mutates in general, then we can calculate when the last ancestor between both viruses was present. What also helps is if we detect viruses in organisms which have been isolated from other similar species. SIV has been detected on Bioko island which helps scientists to conclude that SIV is at least 32.000 years old. Lentiviruses were also detected in gray mouse lemurs and might therefore be at least several million years old since Madagascar and Africa have been isolated from one another for at least 14 million years. It's no coincidence that so many human-specific bacteria/viruses have evolved in the past centuries as we have become way more people who live closely together - that might explain why HIV formed in the 20th century. Regarding your second question I can only suggest you to read "What is life?" by Paul Nurse. I once covered a video based on his book and he also refers to another book by Erwin Schroedinger. I don't want to spoiler you too much if you want to read the book or watch the video but viruses can or cannot be considered alive depending on if you are a physicist/biochemist or biologist. Hope that answers your questions! Here are two related publications: "Island biogeography reveals the deep history of SIV" "A transitional endogenous lentivirus from the genome of a basal primate and implications for lentivirus evolution"

HIV probably started in Africa. If there is any valid documentation that HIV was seen in the 1920s I’d like to see it. Immunodeficiency itself is not HIV. But making claims about early HIV before the 1950s outside of Africa…. I’d like to see it
Siv is over 10 million years old. The hiv virus would have been in close contact with homosapiens as apes carry the genes from a virus that we dont. The jump didnt happen spontaneously from ape to human, that took thousands of years until a specific gene mutation in the virus (after constant exposure to human cells). The rna replacement infection type is also not recent in terms of modern humans. Ofc we will never know the actual origin, just that it was first documented in Africa and spread to the world.
Its very interesting that suddenly exploded in the 70s after being around supposedly since 1920s. It was terrible and terrifying. It also angers me we have meds that are so strong that it can reduce the virus to non detectable levals and yet it can not globally be knocked out. In Germany they have cured multiple people. Dont get me wrong. Im extremely greatfull for the (life boat drugs). But my god we are so close and my view we already are there. FINALLY, a sensible video on the origins of HIV. I read of this in "Spillover" and it makes sense. We know zoonoses exist--we're dealing with one right now. It's my understanding that the virus made the jump to a human around 1908. Given its long incubation period before symptoms show, the date c.1920 that you mention in this video does fit. Thank you for uploading sense in place of the usual misinformation and conspiracy theory.

Err, he kind of explicitly mentioned how politics affected people's receptivity and willingness to take action over HIV. And how scientists opinions can influence their work. Where are you getting this from?
Politics influence science all if the time. Gun deaths and other studies are rarely conducted due to the overwhelming presence of the gun lobby (and before you come at me as antigun, I'm left and own firearms). And look at the abortion issue, that's politics and religion trying to interfere with a private citizen's health care.
@@SemperMaximus Fair enough, I think it's kind of an odd view to take though. Like, I agree that major political organisations generally interfere destructively with a lot of positive science like medicine, but conversely ethics boards are a political organisation that we think should have power over science, because we think human life is worth more than scientific progress, which is a political stance to take. I think the issue is that most public political organisations are so against the people they are meant to stand for nowadays due to lobbying and profiteering :(

As a consequence you had a ton of cases with very heavy fungal infections, often lethal. But those people still had a normal microbiome, antibiotics arent part of the treatment for covid. In fact in india the majority of people have a way better microbiome than in western countries. And yes you can literally look at the fungus under a microscope. And the virus, there are even pictures of it (electron microscope), not to mention that a qPCR can prove it as well.

Your beautiful voice is proper ASMR I tells yuh… thanks for this very informative video…. I worked as a volunteer in the late 90s at a sexual health clinic and my main role was to support and befriend HIV sufferers… these individuals had no one as at that time HIV was truly feared and even the doctors and nurses are certain hospitals wouldn’t go near or want to touch these patients… I would go visit them in hospital and for some individuals it was clear they were not going survive the illness… I’d bring them things to give them some comfort ie snacks fruit reading material and such then I’d sit with them for a while hold their hand and just be a friend to them… some of them looked so frightened and the stigma they faced from hospital staff was so tragic… I’m glad we know better and more info on this terrifying virus… I feel huge empathy for all the sufferers of HIV and hope that one day a cure that suits all will be discovered…
Great work Dretiko on TH-cam you are a true definition of a great herbalist thanks for curing me off herpes which almost took my life...
Interesting Discourse on this very Important Subject . Cheers from Michael.
Here are two related publications:
"Island biogeography reveals the deep history of SIV"
"A transitional endogenous lentivirus from the genome of a basal primate and implications for lentivirus evolution"
Use your logic....HIV and cov19 are man-made bioweapons... People have been eating and having monkeys as pets for 185000 years...

I want to put you down for your lack of facts. But i won't..
Our natural immune response to combat infections relies on the condition of the gut microbiata balance...
Yes and no. Although the gut plays a role in our immune response, there are many more factors to it. You can have the best gut microbiome in the world, but if you suffer from an immunodeficiancy fungi will still love to infect your body.
@@kolliwanne964 Ok. You definitely need to do some research on the immune system and it's relationship with the gut.
